Keller" Subject: Snowpony again My secret is out: I did go back to see Snowpony again at Mercury Lounge the other night, way up front which to me is the only way to see music live. As I think I posted here not long ago, my own initial response to Snowpony was that they were irritatingly monotonous, and I wouldn't blame anybody for giving up on them. As I also said, there was something about them that wouldn't let me be, a song or two that did pique my interest (their best song, possibly, "Bad Sister," is usually the set finale, but one has to endure that long). There's a very English reticence about them that comes off as emotional flatness (combined with the one-riff songs); it takes a while before one works through to the banked intensity underneath. And a while to figure out that there =is= a bit of variety in their music; many of their songs are single-texture midtempo dance tunes, but they have a few that are slower and a little more melodic (though no less single-minded). I was particularly impressed by one song ("Pylons," the album finale) which features triphoplike string samples in different keys, a harmonic minefield through which the vocal line wends its careful way (I wondered how the #$@* the vocalist managed to stay on pitch, in fact). I ended up buying their album (which has more variety than their singles and is in fact very good), and though I understand anyone who wonders if they're worth the trouble to get to know, I've come to the conclusion that they're a good band. By the way, in reply to the poster who "can't imagine" triphop being multilayered: obviously you haven't heard Tricky or Portishead, since "multilayered" is among the very first descriptions that spring to mind concerning their music. Portishead's =Dummy= is highly recommended to everybody. I'm a bit less sympathetic to Tricky's music, but I do think that =Maxinquaye= is a very good album. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 08:00:44 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: New Releases for 9/22 ********************* * ICE CD Releases * ******************* *Rock and Pop new releases* - -------------------------- - - ALPHA PEPPER - (EP) (Melankolic) - - INQUISITION - Symphony (Mercury) - - REGINA BELLE - Believe in Me (MCA) - - TONY BENNETT - Play Ground (family oriented album including duets with Kermit the Frog and Rosie O'Donnell) (Columbia) - - BERTINE - Morbid Latenight Show (Nettwerk) - - BLUE FLANNEL - XL (Universal) - - BTK - BTK (Ignition) - - THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS - Brothers Gonna Work It Out (Freestyle Dust/Astralwerks) - - THE CHURCH - Hologram of Baal (Thirsty Ear) - - COWBOY MOUTH - Mercyland (MCA) - - CYPRESS HILL - IV (Ruffhouse/Columbia) - - DC Talk - Supernatural (Noo Trybe/Virgin) - - DEADLY VENOMS - Deadly Venoms (A&M) - - DEE JAY PUNK - Roc Chickeneye (Independiente/Epic) - - DIESELHED - Elephant Rest Home (Bong Load) - - DUKE DANIELS - Help Is on the Way (E Pluribus Unum) - - THE EELS - Electroshock Blues (DreamWorks) - - THE EVINRUDES - The Evinrudes (Das/Mercury) - - FIREWATER - The Ponzi Scheme (Universal) - - FLIP SQUAD ALL STARS - The Flip Squad All Stars (MCA) - - FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY - Monument (Roadrunner) - - G.A.N. - Faithful to the Streets (Power/Roadrunner) - - GALACTIC COWBOYS - At the End of the Day (Metal Blade) - - GHETTO TWINZ - No Pain No Gain (Noo Trybe/Virgin) - - GOO GOO DOLLS - Dizzy Up the Girl (Warner Bros.) - - GROOVERIDER - Mysteries of Funk (Columbia) - - HOVERCRAFT - Experimental Below (Mute) - - LEE JOHNSON - Trail of Tears: A World Symphony (Intersound) - - JUDE - No One Is Really Beautiful (Maverick) - - JUVENILE - 400 Degreez (Cash Money/Universal) - - CANDYE KANE - Swango (Antones/Sire) - - KISS - Psycho Circus (ECD) (Mercury) - - PATTI LABELLE - Live! I have this sense that it means little- > girlish, lightweight rock music, like Pizzicato Five or something. Am > I even close here? :) Yup. Ten points and a big gob of bubblegum for Joyce! However, I probably wouldn't hold Pizzicato 5 up as an example, though I s'pose they fit the twee bill. My pet examples include Juliana Hatfield, Piwacket, or the first Pee Shy album. Late-breaking news on that disc: it took me three tries before I got a chance to listen to the whole thing straight through last night, but I'm glad I was finally able to listen to the entire thing straight through. The lead singers lost the sickly-sweet little girl quality that marred the band's previous album, _Who Let All the Monkeys Out?_, which is good, but the annoying vocal mannerism of this elpee is that the singers try too hard to sound like Liz Phair. On the yummier tracks (like "The Greatest Show on Earth"), the instrumentation is really allowed to spread out and the band ends up sounding like Lida Husik on _Fly Stereophonic_ as backed up by the band who recorded the wacky music from those outings to the factory on _Sesame Street_. I don't think I'd pay more than $2 for it (which is exactly what I paid), but there's some pleasant moments to be had, and I want to hear their next record. I was also able to find _Middlescence_, the new album by Amy Rigby, for a similarly low price yesterday, which is what I'm listening to right now. I think I like _Diary of a Mod Housewife_ better, though I'm not entirely sure yet (I'm only up to track 6, after all). This one is an overall darker album, seemingly about divorcing her husband. Some of it is wonderful (like "The Summer of My Wasted Youth", which I can bond with), and the production is nifty, but there are some serious clunkers on there as well ("What I Need" in particular left me cold). - --Chelsea - ---- Chelsea, the mod pixie home: away: tugboat@channel1.com odyshape@hotmail.com "I started out as a missionary, but I couldn't find a religion which didn't promise things to some people at the exclsion of others. I'll be seeing her in San Fran when I'm out there for a biz conf which coincides nicely with the Jazz Fest...plus she'll be here in Atlanta at Variety Playhouse (a nice non-smoking venue where I've seen many fine artists, including Herbie Hancock, Vanessa Mae, John Zorn, Marta Sebestyen & Musikas, Me'shell N'degecelo, etc etc). Thanks for the advance tip so I can put this one on my Dec calendar! Oh, yes, Yoshi's is a great jazz venue in the Bay Area, if ya'll are out there, check that show out for sure! I'm on the Ellis Paul email list, and I do want to mention that the Nields will play with Ellis Paul at the Birchmere in metro-DC in, hmmm, was it November or December? Well, at any rate, Ellis Paul is also very worth checking out. It should be a very good show. > Their voices are indeed quite strange. Personally, I'd put them in my > "second tier" of favorite bands, right below the pantheon (Fela Kuti, > Zap Mama, David Grisman Quintet, Alison Brown Quartet, Boukman Eksperyans). That's an interesting list. I see you're into various international music acts...I must confess I didn't like Boukman E. when I saw them one year with the Africa Fete tour, but they were on the bill with Angelique Kidjo and also Baaba Maal who shine so brightly that it's hard to measure up to their energy and stage presence. Fela of course is in a class all by himself! Is anyone else on ecto heavily into world music...or am I straying off topic by wanting to compare notes on this genre? I am sooo into international music, not only do I buy it on cd but I also try to catch it live when I can. Example: happily and coincidentally I got to hear and see perform this past weekend the Duquesne University Tamburitzans back in my hometown. They are actually the oldest performing group in the U.S., although of course over the decades the personnel has changed. The group is composed of university students on scholarship who are multi-instrumentalists, singers and dancers who perform songs and dances from throughout Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Pretty phenomenal...they tour the U.S. and the world so if you ever get a chance, do try to catch them live. (If anyone's interested, I can give you their url.) Carol P.S. Each song, for me, has a distinct sound and story to tell. > If you can't see The Nields live, the best introduction to them would > be 'mousse, the album they released this June. I agree that 'mousse might be a better introduction to what the Nields sound like live, but I want to add that when I was lucky enough to see them this spring (The Wire in New Cumberland, PA), their renditions of the Greta songs were dead-on the CD sound (only better, natch). Clearly, I fell into a sort of risotto stupor. But the big discovery for me was that risotto just is not that difficult to cook. I thought it would be most challenging. No. The challenge IS, however, to create some kind of risotto thing out of what you already have in the fridge. So, get the arborio rice. Read a recipe. My favorite versions of risotto (and they are all different, and never written down) involve home made vegetable stock -- usually simmered for a while with plenty of garlic, brocolli-and-kale-and-carrot-and-leek- and-whatever-veggies-you-have-chopped-recently ENDS, oh, and potatoes, too. Sautee the risotto in a a good hunk of butter (often at this point, with garlic, shallots or fennel). Then begin with the stock, simmering the rice. Stir lots. Add more stock: 3 to 1 and some white wine is oh, so fine, as well. Stir in some romano or parmesan cheese at the end. Fresh pepper and salt. Top it with a pile of stir-fried or steamed fennel or swiss chard. And buy local and organic if you can. See you on the big road, Jennifer And thanks, so many of you, for buying the record. So tell all your friends about "Veering from the Wave" -- as always, we will have CDs and t-shirts for sale at gigs. I think my favorites at the moment are No Mermaid, Whatever It Takes, Whether or Not, Hot On Your Trail (definitely some Mazzy Star influence here), and Diving To Be Deeper. I like her voice, which is smooth, and she has chosen music that suits her well. She also has just a tiny touch of that bell-like quality that I like in Sarah M. I like the fact that the songs don't all sound alike, but are a nice mix of slow and dreamy with energetic. Is this her freshman effort? (She received her first major notice when she was featured on the second compilation of Irish female singers/musicians, "A Woman's Heart 2"). This album has not been released in the US - and seems available only as a pretty high priced import (like $30+ at cdnow & cdeurope). She received further recognition when she opened for Joan Baez when she toured Europe in '96 in support of her "Ring Them Bells" album. And Joan selected "No Mermaid" to record on her latest album, Gone From Danger. (in fact, that was the song Joan presented in most of her US television appearances!) Sinead's website is found at: http://www.dojo.ie/lohan/ and the info/tour dates that Drew Harrington kindly posted recently are: > >I noticed that Sinead Lohan has a tour going on soon and thought that many >ecto readers (Ecto-Heads? Poignant, heartfelt, quirky...words don't do it justice. Another favorite is Bound by the Beauty - slightly on the americana side, some fun quirky songs ("everything reminds me of my dog"), some pretty ballads (one with guest k.d. lang)... I am reminded of why I'm not a music critic :-) I'm sure others will describe both albums better than I can, but those are the two I would recommend for starters. heather who is happy cause she just wrote another new song - -- |*********************************************************| | Heather Russell | | My music site: http://www.freecloud.com/heather | | The Mending Wall: http://www.unc.edu/~gumption/tmw.html | | Email: hrussellatbellsouthdotnet | |_________________________________________________________| "I'm in favor of love as long as it doesn't happen when 'The Simpsons' is on television." --- Anita, age 6 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 20:35:25 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Complete fall tour info for Patty Griffin Howdy folks :-) Just received from her management....here's the complete up-to-date info for this fall's tour for Patty Griffin. I think it's because it is very much a product of the early 80's and that's when I was growing up. The movie concept was created in the early 80's and it took 10 years to get to the screen. The soundtrack is loaded with people from that era - Grace Jones, Thomas Dolby, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Wendy and Lisa. etc. My theory #1 (as true or false as any theory out there) was that if it had come out in the early 80's it would have been a hit. Unfortunately, the "let joy and innocence prevail" theme didn't go over well with the cynical, ironic-minded audience of the 90's. As well as the the subplots, set, and music showing the signs of age (especially that MTV subplot). Which leads to theory #2 - I think that the decision to bring Tori in was simply to update the soundtrack as much as possible - they probably didn't have the budget to completely redo the entire thing, so it was probably the most economical to re-do just that one song with a 90's artist. Tori was pretty unknown back then, Little Earthquakes had barely come out I believe, she was not getting anywhere near the kind of attention or airplay that she is now, so I wouldn't think it would be a commercial decision per se. Commercial back then would have been Roxette, Wilson Phillips etc.... But hey, what do I know? :-) Theory #3 - And i say this as someone who personally likes jane more than tori *preparing to duck the blows* .................... I think tori's version sounds better. ymmv :-) - - heather - -- |*********************************************************| | Heather Russell | | My music site: http://www.freecloud.com/heather | | The Mending Wall: http://www.unc.edu/~gumption/tmw.html | | Email: hrussellatbellsouthdotnet | |_________________________________________________________| "I'm in favor of love as long as it doesn't happen when 'The Simpsons' is on television." --- Anita, age 6 ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #340 **************************
