They released Eve in '94, and IRS re-released their original indie album, Til We Have Faces in '95. I seem to remember hearing (probably here - where else do I hear such miscellany?) that they were dropped, but I have nothing more solid than vague memories. It sounds like they've got a new one that they're selling, which gives me yet one more thing to keep an eye out for. ___________________________________________________________________________ merlin@verio.com erik@falcon.kla.com http://www.surf.com/~merlin In your head, no car is fast enough In your heart, no love is true Would it ruin all your solitary fancies If I told you that it isn't only you? -- Emma Bull, Cats Laughing, "For It All" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 06:53:51 EDT From: KBolin0418@aol.com Subject: Re: some people that just don't get enough credit around here In a message dated 98-09-21 01:48:58 EDT, valkraemer@igc.org writes: << I second your enthusiasm for Lucinda Williams and Amy Rigby. "Bohemia" is actually her 2nd album, following her debut, "Oceanview Hotel" and her 3rd and most recent album, "Dragonfly." Your assesment of her music is pretty accurate. "Dragonfly" is pretty ethereal folk/pop music. But Moore's lyrics and arrangements lift her above the standard fare. She also has an excellent track on "The Hanging Garden" soundtrack called "Deep Water," that sounded like it was recorded during the "Dragonfly" sessions. Last I heard she had signed to Jann Ardenn's Big Hip Records but hadn't recorded anything yet. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Colford | Reading Public Library Head of Technical Services | Reading, Massachusetts colford@noblenet.org | *North of Boston Library Exchange* - -------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 09:05:28 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Re: Over the Rhine CD In a message dated 9/21/98 4:08:12 AM Eastern Daylight Time, merlin@verio.com writes: *<< Well, I actually have three of their CDs, so they obviously aren't hawking their only one. ;) Patience is their 2nd, from '92. Titles are(information copied and pasted from their website at www.overtherhine.com): *Til We Have Faces This is the first CD released by the band. The original release of this is no longer available on CD. However you may get lucky and find a copy in your local music store from when this CD was later released by the now defunked IRS. This is still available on cassette for $8 from us. Patience Patience, the second OTR release, is also no longer available on CD unless you happen to come across one in a record store somewhere. You may obtain a cassette copy from us for a mere $8. Eve This is the third release from the band and unfortunatly we are currently plumb out of copies. Again check your local stores for a copy or you might want to join the Over the Rhine discussion group where someone might be able to find you a copy. But cheer up, the next several recordings are available and are very much worth the purchase price. Good Dog Bad Dog Good Dog Bad Dog is only available on CD. Booklet includes lyrics, photos and recording notes. The cost is $14. This is a must for any CD collection. The Darkest Night of the Year This enchanting CD has 13 songs, and is 44 minutes in length. It's a rich, nocturnal collection containing the band's own renditions of Traditional Carols as well as original compositions. The cost is $14. Besides All I Need is You. This collection was made expressly for RHINELANDERS, people who responded to our advertisement (JOIN A CLUB). This collection of tunes is available to you with your membership to the OTR fan club. The price of membership is a pultry $20. If you like the idea of receiving newsletters, and you really want to follow the band on an intense level, you sound like a Rhinelander. Becoming an official Rhinelander entitles you to: An underground Over the Rhine CD compilation. 4 editions of 'The Northern Spy': the expanded version of our original newsletter. 10% off on all mail-order merchandise. One yearly gathering, a soiree if you will, with all Rhinelanders welcome, to enjoy an exclusive acoustic performance by the band - an all-around hang-out time, a banquet in the orchard. I'm sure we'll think up other stuff too. Serpents & Gloves This video is in rare quantity. This collection contains interviews from the band as well as unreleased songs such as Uncle Fredericks Farm, Who Will Guard the Door and more. Also here: An escaped prisoner running through the woods. Happy with Myself?: the abandoned monastery performance. Jacksie: with Libby and her cast of thousands. If I'm Drowning: dutch rain and a guitar knob flies clean off, and much more... * I have all of the albums and love them all, so I can't recommend one over the other. OTR can do some pretty rockin' stuff.....as well as some very beautiful slow stuff. Karen Berquist has an absolutely gorgeous voice, and backup vocalist Terri Templeton blends well with Karen. Most of their songs were written by keyboard player Lynford Detweiler, who happens to be the son of an Amish minister (or something like that). OTR's video, Serpents and Gloves, gives the history of the band and some background on various members of the original group. Although they're relatively obscure here in the States, they've done some touring in Europe and have an established fan base in some European countries. Holly Cole fans have lots to get excited about this Christmas. On October 26th, Alert Music takes great pride in the release of Treasure, a compilation of Holly Cole Trio material recorded between 1989 and 1993. This was a time of discovery and experiment when Cole recorded and performed exclusively as a trio with pianist Aaron Davis and bassist David Piltch. The compilation includes six favourites from the platinum plus recordings "Girl Talk", "Blame It On My Youth", and "Don't Smoke In Bed" and six tracks that were recorded in that time period but never found themselves released on a Holly Cole Trio recording in this country. As well, Cole has recently recorded two new tracks with her existing quartet. They are the show stopping "Tea for Two" and the seasonal "Christmas Trees and Holly Leaves" written by Mary Margaret O'Hara, both of which are added as bonus tracks to this release. I had dragged along 10 of my friends to see this show with me, and we all sat together. I'd never heard of The Nields before, nor had any of my 10 friends. 6 of us, including me, *loved* them. The other 5 found them extremely annoying (unfortunately, my girlfriend was in the latter group). Their voices are indeed quite strange. Personally, I'd put them in my "second tier" of favorite bands, right below the pantheon (Fela Kuti, Zap Mama, David Grisman Quintet, Alison Brown Quartet, Boukman Eksperyans). But I can understand how and why their sound might grate on people. I don't find it strange at all that some people really dislike them. I *do* find strange that some people like them mildy, with no strong feelings about it :) Regarding Greta, it's definitely my least favorite Nields album. It feels like an attempt at popularity through becoming a rock band. But they're not a rock band, they're folk. Their audience is a folk audience. Their songwriting is, in my opinion, among the best I've seen. They need to put the lyrics up front. Greta has some very good songs on it, but they're hidden behind a truly awful mix. Also, a lot of them are very similar. The re-release of Greta is a little better, particularly the extra tracks (such as Taxi Girl). They remastered and took some of the edge off the mix. But overall, my comments are the same. If you can't see The Nields live, the best introduction to them would be 'mousse, the album they released this June. It's the only album that does a good job of representing The Nields on recording. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- Producer, Free Live Music -- booking@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ All genre ethnic diversity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year Free live music three times weekly WBRS in Waltham, 100.1FM stereo ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 19:55:15 -0500 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Heather Nova in the Midwest!! Brown" Subject: Recoil, etc. Recoil (Unsound Methods) is Alan Wilder's--formerly of Depeche Mode-- project, featuring some female vocalists. Has anyone heard this? I was intrigued by the wide range of textures, the murky-to-dark ambiance (admittedly, sometimes just plain weird, i.e. Lucious Apparatus), there is even an overt (sampled?) hommage to P. Gabriel in the first cut. I played it for a friend, who I thought would like it. His lukewarm reaction was, "hmmm, sounds like Tricky." Am I losing my marbles? I've never heard Tricky, but I can't conceive of any rap/trip hop being so multi-layered. On a less nervous note, I'm looking for recommendations for a first cd by Jane Siberry and Over the Rhine. I have heard Siberry (and like what I heard), but never did buy any. OTR, I'm just guessing from reading about them. To clue you in, my favorite stuff would lie somewhere between Joni (especially the Larry Klein era stuff) and anything Celtic-tinged (I have a soft spot for Steeleye Span, I know they're an indirect source, but hey...I'm from KS). Oh, and I like Pop too, as long as it's smart. Thanks!! So even with short files that might successfully be loaded into memory, there's no 'save' option. I believe in cases where the page uses direct http:// link to the .ra file (rather than indirect metafile), the player retrieves the file by http and it is searchable on the hd. but, with huge streaming files, I believe it is buffered, played & overwritten ... hmm ... can't *imagine* what Paul wants to save & savor Regards, Carolyn Andre - ------------------- Chicago, IL / USA | Support Independent Music! Although I haven't done this myself yet, Paul, someone from FTE posted this information recently: **I just found this cool utility that lets you save *ALL* remote realaudio onto your machine, even from places that don't let you normally save it to your machine using RealAudio Plus, and even lets you save live streams! It works very well and I just downloaded the entire concert from LA Live of Sarah McLachlan onto my machine (it's about 8 megs in all). Anyway, I figured lots of you out there would love to have such a utility, because not only will it let you view things offline, it will let you view any bitrate of archived realaudio in realtime (regardless of your modem speed) provided you download it first to your machine. The program is called X-FileGet, and can be found on this page: http://www.2bsys.com/X-FileGet/ There is also another program for converting realaudio to wav files located on that page which can be useful too. Anyway, using X-FileGet is kind of like using GetRight, if anyone's used that before. I can't provide help for anyone so just check out the page and work through the documentation and you'll figure it out real quick. I'm pretty sure this is only for Win95.. ** Hope it works for you! Oh well, just a little bitch from an inhabitant of a smaller city that's very close to a big, overly recognized one. Anyway, I'll be there, and will send report. I get to review the show actually, which makes me happy. ALSO, I've grown very fond of _Sour Pie_ in the short time I've owned it. The first song, "Stormy", is a strong starter that instantly showcases her ability to be go from wounded warbler to fierce-but-subdued storyteller. Once that's established, she continues on with the other songs, all of which she gives good dramatic rising/falling action. That's mainly due to her mesmerizing voice. It's all given nice closure with the final song _I Won't Stay_. I don't know who Chantal Kreviazuk is (someone worth checking out I assume?), and the Alanis comparison I can deal with (although Holly doesn't try too hard to play the vicious girl routine), but I don't want to put Holly in the same sentence with Meredith Brooks. (Um, even though I admit to only knowing that horrible song "Bitch", but that's enough to turn me off for life). I was reminded of Liz Phair, but that comparison has more to do with lyrical content than vocal style. Holly has accomplished on _Sour Pie_ what many artists strive for with full-lengths. I wish this had been a full-length, cuz I'm achin' for more. Guess I'll have to check out _Stuff_. Mark n.p.
