When Jane sings it's not the quality of her voice that matters so much as what and how she sings. With Sarah I don't much like what and how she sings, but I do like her voice. >Regarding other comparisons that have been made, I think the one that I really >don't get is KaTe. I don't love them all equally, but the only ones that haven't gotten a lot of airplay on my stereo are _Teenager_, _A Day in the Life_, and _Child_. And with what Neile said. I guess for me there is a distinction between "If you like Kate Bush, you might also like Jane Siberry," and "Jane Siberry sounds like Kate Bush." There is a big difference, and sometimes that is not made clear to the person to whom the description is being offered. I, for one, have bought a few CDs after hearing the artist talked up on the list only to find myself listening to something completely different than what I expected based on peoples' descriptions. The track, 13, is officially listed as "The Closing of the Year / Happy Workers (reprise)". On my copy of the CD, nobody is listed on the cover of the cd (including the folks doing "The Closing of the Year" (Wendy 'n Lisa, who are credited on the first rendition of the track, and, much more noticeably, Seal, who does a portion of the lead on this version, but not the earlier version! he receives no cover credit either...)) as performing this track. But inside, we see under the track credits, "Jane Siberry appears courtesy of Reprise Records." Again, Seal is not listed at all! Both Seal and Jane are listed under the Musicians. pedantically yours, jeff ;-) np: _Toys_ (but I popped it in while I was double checking the liner notes, which I was pretty sure credited Jane; I *had* been playing the new Klezmatics disc, _The Well_, which is fabulous, but quite different from their earlier work, and probably not of too much interest around here) - -- |Jeffrey C. I *knew* I shouldn't have responded to Neile before reading my backlog of e-mail for the day -- you answered her question almost identically to the way I did. BUT, I made lost of noise about how it was Seal who didn't get any credit, not Jane. ;-) Yup, in response to you second post, it *is* Seal singing the end of the reprise of "The Closing of the Year." I, too, play the album a lot during the winter, but it's not so much an x-mas thing as the beautifully cold feeling of a lot of the music. (and I don't mean that in a "sterile" sense). Much like I think Heidi Berry's eponymous album just screams to be played a lot during the fall; it just *fits*. jeff np: I've gone back to _The Well_. Many of the lyrics that Vickie pointed out as being so powerful are faves of mine, too. I often think of "The Wretches Gone Awry" because the wing imagery is some of the best I think Happy's written. Hearing Happy perform it live ('92 in Philly, '97(?) at the Bottom Line, when she made the comment about dancing...) were two of the highlights of my concert- going career. Again, wow.
