Many of us on Long Island are close to one of WSHU's simulcasters.... the Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT.)-run NPR/PRI affiliate - which I still refer to by their old nickname, "the Classic" (classical music takes up the lion's share of their weekday fare) - runs four hours worth of _Echoes_, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays, followed by a _Hearts of Space_ dose at 10 p.m. I don't have much worth saying about the rest of the "Classic's" weekend schedule...those who live near one of their simulcasters will known why. _Echoes_ is where I first heard Happy (as well as Brazil's Fortuna); she is very fortunate that John Diliberto is in her corner. Too bad! I've always been of the camp that the song takes on a life of it's own beyond whatever the artist intended. I know the story behind Possession, but I still listen to it just as Joyce described. It doesn't really strike me as the dangerous view of a stalker. I bet someone else could sing it that way, but Sarah's voice doesn't convince me. It doesn't have that edge. Not that a stalker has to have an edgy voice, but it just doesn't work for me that way. Besides, it seems fair that the artist may not even fully understand what they are putting into a song. They could have touched something inside themselves that they still don't recognize. Of course, when interpreting a song, you project yourself onto it, so that whatever you walk away with is a melding of what the artist intended and your own psyche. I've always wondered, based on the ease of reading Possession as a powerful, sexual, thrilling love song, if Sarah didn't have some thrill about being so desired. I know the reality was a tragedy, but I wonder if she didn't get something out of it too (besides just a hit song). Has Enya been canonized here? I like her for some certain moods, but I'm much more likely to put on _A BONE CRONE DRONE_ by Sheila Chandra if I'm wanting meditative, spacey music -- or Delerium for something more trippy. Being a listmember for more than a couple of years, and a busy (work, school, kids) person, I find a lot of my music "clues" come from the net -- very efficient and can be read between homework assignments or software (job) assignments. Compile the OS, read the Ecto list. I tend to like PJ HARVEY, THROWING MUSES, and ANI DIFRANCO the best of these. Have to really be in a strange mood for Garbage (seems a bit contrived, but haven't listened to "2.0" yet). HOLE, LIZ PHAIR, and BIKINI KILL are great for variety. Most of these groups my decision to buy was at least based in part by recommendations coming from this list. (much of the time didn't have time to go to a Tower listening station but had time to order via telnet -- later web). Of course, just 'cuz I like those, doesn't mean I *don't* like Sarah, Tori, etc. Just depends on the mood. Eponine writes: > Oh and by the way, Irvin, I think PJ Harvey is underrated by the > public. I listened to _DRY_, _RID OF ME_, and _4 TRACK DEMOS_ and was really taken by her ferocity and style, and her ability to transmit emotion. _TO BRING YOU MY LOVE_ was tamer (blander?) and more bluesy, and put her more into the mainstream. I remember about the time that "big fish, little fish" (or whatever it's called) hit the airwaves was the time the P.J. Harvey mailing list I was on started becoming flooded with people with silly remarks who'd never heard about her other stuff. Not that I minded her getting the exposure, it just became tedious when the discussion was more about the old-timers vs. the new subsciber's point of veiw than discussing the music. > P.S. I like some jewel songs, but I hear from those fortunate enough to have a life that her live work is much better. I agree that a glance through her poetry book made me not pick it up a second time from the local bookstore. But she does have song-writing talent, me thinks. But sometimes her songs are ... er ... embarassing. She's inconsistent. As far as Sarah goes, I love Sarah, but like even most of my favorite artists, not everything appeals to me. I got FTE first, and thought it was *GREAT STUFF*. Then I got _SOLACE_ and _TOUCH_. Didn't like them at first -- to MOR (middle of the road) and folky. Forced myself to play them a few times. Ended up liking _SOLACE_ the best, but not all songs. Mostly "Black", "Into the Fire", and the first song (or is it the second song). Now the stuff I thought was so way cool on FTE seems like good music, more rock-ish, but not as much meat in the lyrics. Surfacing even more so. Never got into _TOUCH_ that much, though some songs might go well on a compilation of sorts. Rarely listen to the whole album. > Irvin put it well. Whether that is sound, voice, lyrics, expression, doesn't matter. For instance, "Wayfaring Stranger" by Laura Love isn't unique lyrics (an old standard), not wildly innovative music, but it is the expression which is cool. Even though the first time I heard it I thought, "What kind of *BUTCHERING* is she *DOING* to this song?!?!". The song "Bones" by Susan McKeown is one-of-a-kind too. In fact, it seems the slide began about the year after Warpaint won album of the year at the station. I for one would like nothing more than to see a group of people start up another station to give XPN some real competition in the market it serves. >> In my opinion Helen is more than a fan of Happy's. She was part of her success in the Philadelphia area. My gut feeling when I spoke to her was that she felt that maybe Shawn Stewart was not really familiar with Happys stuff. I don't know what Helen's position is at WXPN now but I don't think she has a lot of influence. She didn't seem confident enough to grab Shawn and shake her up a little over this Happy thing. When I get the time I want to call Shawn up and see if she will reveal her thoughts on Happy between songs. The noon show is a bad time for me. Maybe we should all call the station and let them know how we feel when Shawn is doing her show, as she is the program director. Actually, I think xpn has suffered since her "era" began. I actually enjoyed Marilyn a lot during that time slot and was upset when she left. As I stated before, Happy was in philly to do an echoes show in the last week or so. If anyone knows when that's airing I'd appreciate a post. fred ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Sep 1998 00:49:27 -0500 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Chicago area folks: Celtic Fest Chicago This weekend Chicago will host the 2nd annual Celtic Fest in Grant Park. Information, including schedules can be found at: http://www.ci.chi.il.us/Tourism/Festivals/Celtic/ I'm sure all the groups are good, but these two especially caught my eye for Saturday night: 7:15 PM - Capercaille 8:30 PM - The Donal Lunny Band I've been a long-time fan of Capercaillie, but had never seen them live until this past summer's Fleadh, where their set was a highlight in a glorious day full of highlights. Anyone in the Chicago area should try not to miss this *free* show. I haven't seen The Donal Lunny Band, but as far as I'm concerned, anyone who's been in such great bands (Planxty, Bothy Band, Moving Hearts) and who's worked with such great musicians (including Loreena McKennitt, Altan, Sharon Shannon and, of course, our dear KaTe) is worth seeing. If you're in the Chicago area, that's where to be. If you're not in the Chicago area, then you're somewhere else and can taunt me with good concerts when they come to your area.
