I'm terrible at describing music, but I would say Throwing Muses have a sort of angular guitar sound with lots of unexpected turns in melody and tempo. My favorite of theirs is _University_, which is their second to last. By then, their sound was still far from mainstream pop, but much more accessible. If you want to try TM out, I would suggest that one or _The Real Ramona_. I think all of their CDs are wonderful, with the possible exception of _Red Heaven_ which only has 2 or 3 songs I like. But I would ease myself into their earlier work. Oct 18 1998 Pawling, NY Turning Point Oct 24 1998 Philadelphia, PA Tin Angel co-bill w/ Lucy Kaplansky JONATHA BROOKE I attended "An Evening with Jonatha Brooke" at the Delaware Theater Company this weekend. This was a completely solo show and a real treat. In addition to the regular selection of tunes from her solo shows Jonatha played some new tunes, and an old one. The first new song is one Jonatha recently wrote for the new WB TV show "Felicity." It was in contention for the show's theme song, but according to a "Felicity" Fan website Madonna's "The Power of Goodbye" seems to be the selected theme song. Expect the song to show up in one of the episodes (and maybe in some previews/commercials). "Felicity" premiers Sep 29th at 9:00pm, following "Buffy the Vampier Slayer" which used "Inconsolable" last season's season ender. The second new song was a touching song "about saying goodbye." No doubt about (at least in part) her split with bandmate/husband Alain Mallet. She also did a cool new solo version of "Always" that I really liked. A band version will appear on the new album we have been hearing about. The CD is done and should be available within a month. It's a CD of live songs culled from shows recorded in April. When available it CD will be available directly from Jonatha (web and mail order) and not in stores. Jonatha will continue touring this fall (sorry no dates announced yet) and will be working on a new studio CD with an expected Spring release. For those of you with connections to Goodyear in Italy, Jonatha will be doing a private show for the Italian tire bigwigs. I've been holding off on buying new music lately, partially because of my work for some of the finest webzines out there, and partially because my old boyfriend sent me a package of stuff that I'd left in Gotham when I moved out last winter. Who needs EWS when you've got free music coming at you in one direction and a box of old tunes in the other? I broke the spell today, though, when I went out and purchased the two latest singles by Tori Amos. The "Jackie's Strength" single hasn't registered with me yet...the songs are pretty, keeping with FtCGH's tradition of excellent B-sides. The piano playing is beautiful, the choir on "Beulah Land" quite effective. But I want to hold off posting a review until I give it a few more listens. The "Raspberry Swirl" remixes left me cold. They weren't actively annoying like the "Professional Widow" and "Talula" extended dance remixes, but after hearing a taste of the remixes somewhere, I was expecting a bit more than what I got. If you want to provide a good home for it and have something good to trade, drop me a line and we'll work something out. (If you have a copy of the compilation _Luxury Condos Coming to Your Neighborhood Soon_, or any of the 12" singles from Syd Straw's album _Surprise_, I'll throw in a copy of the _Great Expectations_ soundtrack.) I must also raise my voice and ask any Boston-area Ectophiles to not shop at HMV in Cambridge Ma. I worked for the Downtown Crossing store over Christmas a few years ago and had an excellent experience, and leapt at the chance to work there again this past summer. It was one of the worst job experiences I've had in my lifetime. Okay, they didn't refuse to pay me, and there wasn't any problem that a labor union would scoff at. However, I was poorly trained, and my supervisor was more concerned with disciplining me than with retraining me. The upper management (excluding my supervisor in the world room and his assistant) had major attitude problems and would take this out on their employees, with megabitch Lisa Goren being the worst offender. I understand that many of these people are bitter because they're in their thirties and forties and still working jobs that younger, less experienced folks should work, but by no means should they slam their employees with this and make them feel bad. But I'm still willing to give Sarah the benefit of the doubt and suggest that she *does*, at times, write such stuff from the point of view of a character in a story. "Possession," for instance, has that sort of warped intensity ("I'll kiss you so hard / I'll take your breath away" is *not* romantic in that song!) Of course, with crap like "I Love You" on _Surfacing_, the song in question probably was written seriously. Y'know, apparently HFS has determined that _Surfacing_ is too pop now, but they can't afford not to be playing Sarah, so they've put "Possession" back in fairly heavy rotation; I think I've heard it 3 times in these past two work days. jeff np: _The Well_ / Klezmatics and Chava Alberstein (one of today's new releases I picked up, along with the "Jackie's Strength" single...thanks to meth for suggesting that the b-sides were worth it. tasty.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 18:07:03 -0700 From: "C. Er, how's your voice? ;-) I think we need to know before we take you up on your generous offer to serenade us! > But I'm still willing to give Sarah the benefit of the doubt and > suggest that she *does*, at times, write such stuff from the point of view > of a character in a story. But I'm curious if *guys* write that kind of intense personal passion stuff about women. If so, I sure have missed it. I'd love to hear it (or are women the only ones so open to expressing foolish love & other intense feelings?) > Y'know, apparently HFS has determined that _Surfacing_ is too pop now, but > they can't afford not to be playing Sarah, so they've put "Possession" > back in fairly heavy rotation; I think I've heard it 3 times in these past > two work days. Is that WHFS you speak of? Ya know, WRNR is the first place I ever heard Sarah...are they still on the air? Is Weasel still around (good musical taste, but that *voice* egads!) Burka" Subject: Re: Sarah in Starr Report Carol sez: > Er, how's your voice? ;-) I think we need to know before we take you > up on your generous offer to serenade us! depends on who you ask. actually, it depends more on whether or not a song is within my range (a target which has moved around a surprising amount in the last couple of years) and how scratchy my allergies and asthma are making me. I've had people scream at me to shut up, and I've had people ask me if I sing in a less-than-personal capacity. Mostly the former. ;-) > But I'm curious if *guys* write that kind of intense personal passion stuff > about women. If so, I sure have missed it. I'd love to hear it (or are > women the only ones so open to expressing foolish love & other intense > feelings?) First off, my point wasn't so much that it was intense personal passion and openly expressing love, but that it was a characterization, in much the way that "Possession" is about a stalker/obsessive fan. That said, there are certainly men who write in that heart-on-the-sleeve expressiveness about "foolish love & other intense feelings." Plenty of singer-songwriters (James Taylor, anyone?), for instance. Or how about Sting's "Love is the Seventh Wave"? Phil Collins' "This Must Be Love." Peter Gabriel's "Love to Be Loved." Matthew Sweet's "Life Without You," Peter Himmelman's "With You" (or, for a slightly different take on expressions of love, any of the songs he wrote for his kids, like "Raina" or "Laugh My Beloved" -- that one, in particular, is a song that can move me to tears). The list goes on and on -- the discs just weren't sitting on Clinton's desk, and the songs don't get played on the radio. But they *are* there. > Is that WHFS you speak of? Ya know, WRNR is the first place I ever heard > Sarah...are they still on the air? Is Weasel still around (good musical > taste, but that *voice* egads!) Yup, WHFS, which used to be reasonably good and now mostly sucks. Weasel is still on (in fact, they moved him back to his early-afternoon slot, but he doesn't get to play My Three Songs anymore. ) RNR is still around, but almost impossible to receive in most of the DC area (though Neal once reported good reception near his folks' in Arlington). RNR holds the distinction of being the first (and only, as far as I know) station in the DC/Baltimore/Annapolis area to ever play Happy (they used to play a bit off BtC) jeff (heading out the door to vote in the dc primary) np-on-the-discman: _Fugazi_ / Marillion - -- |Jeffrey C. Follow up: I called CLZ again today and asked the DJ to whom the receptionist referred me, "Who WAS that at 10:45pm last night?" He said "You mean that unusual-sounding piece called _Roy_?" "Yeah" "That was Happy Rhodes, who has released her first album in years- We played her a few years back when she last had a new release <>... You want the album name?" "Yeah" "Lemme see.... <> It's on Samson Music and it's called..... Hold on a sec..... Hmmmm... The computer truncated the name, but it's _Many Worlds Are Born... something.. uh, maybe "Today"? "How about "Tonight"? "Actually, there IS an "N" in there, so probably "Tonight" "Thank you... any plans to play other cuts from the album?" "Well this is a single, so I don't know". "I thought you folks are the "Album Station".. "We ARE, but we frequently program the singles from each album". "So you're actually the "Singles Station"... "No, the singles are taken from the albums".... "Whatever, I LOVE that Happy person's voice and will go out and get the album today.. Ask the station manager if he'll make an exception and play other stuff from the album, ok?" "Of course, sir, yes, I will"..... And then I went to Bull Moose and bought another copy of MWABT to give to a friend of my wife's who's into Enya..... Do ALL radio stations recruit from Burger King employee lists??? :) R n.p. WCLZ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 13:59:32 -0500 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: WXPN/Philly, Boys for Pele, John Wesley Hi Ectophilians: I'm one of those rare posters that doesn't get offended if you don't respond. ;) On a serious note, I am deeply saddened by WXPN abandoning Happy. I've only lived in Philly three years, but that station has been my sustenance....up until now. I can't seriously support them anymore knowing that they're not playing MWABT. It's a shame that DJs like Helen Leicht and Michaela Majoun--big supporters, even FANS--aren't bitching (or perhaps bitching MORE) to Shawn Stewart the PD about this. I've written a couple of e-mails, but of course, no replies. What a damn shame, and what lousy, lousy timing. It's cool Happy's getting play on John Deliberto's "Echoes" program, but truthfully, as cool as that program is, it's on late at night and probably doesn't reach a ton of people. I'm glad we're discussing Boys for Pele. I was recently in the camp of "self-indulgent and I can't relate,"--even traded in the CD for about a year and then just recently bought it again, after enjoying her latest. And I'm liking it a lot better now. (Also thanks to fellow EctoGirl Krys Thomas for urging me to try this record again.) It's still not my fave Tori release, but it's growing on me. I think another reason why I rejected it is because of the cover artwork. I'm pretty offended by anything to do with guns, and I've always considered Tori this peace-love-tree hugging-type girl, so I was disturbed. Yeah, I know she's showing a bit of her North Carolina background creatively (?) here, but I still didn't get it. Or maybe I just have an aversion to rednecks. (You know, the stupid rednecks...not the cool ones. I graduated from a high school class of 80!) Also--does anyone else consider their distaste for a certain album related to their personal life at that time, more than anything else? I think a part of me disliked Boys for Pele just because my life was a bit topsy-turvy at that time, and for some reason I wasn't finding solace in one of my fave artists, only chaos. Kind of like "you are what you eat" but with music. And on a last note (can infrequent posters be any more verbose?!), if you live in Rochester or Buffalo, NY and have nothing to do the weekend of October 9th & 10th, please join me in seeing John Wesley perform. (I know that is a potential Happy tour weekend, but I'm planning on doing both!) He is a great singer-songwriter type with deeply emotional lyrics and a vocal delivery similiar to the recent Goo Goo Dolls sound. John has opened for Marillion since 1992. E me for more details. Wermont Subject: Possession > "Possession," for instance, has that sort of > warped intensity ("I'll kiss you so hard / I'll take your breath away" is > *not* romantic in that song!) That's not how that song struck me at all when I first heard it (before learning what it was about). I thought it *was* a passionate love song. Maybe not romantic exactly, which tends to be softer and more tender, but with a harder more desperate edge, which people in passionate love can certainly feel. Love and sexual need certainly has its dark side. And anyway, I didn't necessarily even hear it as "dark," because I heard the line "take your breath away" not as a threat of suffocation, but that she wanted to thrill her lover so much that it took his breath away. And at the time I remember feeling like "you go, girl" for writing such an openly lustful, desirous lyric. I found it kind of thrilling myself! So I was a bit disappointed when I found out that it was from the point of view of a warped fan, and that she didn't really approve of such desire. Her own love songs tend to be a lot more milquetoast in general. Too bad! Joyce ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #328 **************************
