But he had lots of 'em. My favorite songs on an album are almost never the same as anyone elses, so the best track theory never works for me. I guess if you pick the most off-the-wall track, that's usually my pick. Actually, you should probably skip the first two tracks ("Something About Trains" has a very...country...feel to it, although it does have this cool electric guitar things in it a couple times). BbtB is (yes, someone _had_ to say it) My Favorite Album. I love it precisely for the wide range of themes and styles, while still maintaining a cohesive whole. "Hockey" IS winter (but what do I know, I'm from Mississippi/Alabama). "Everything Reminds Me Of My Dog" is vintage Siberry quirkiness. "The Life Is The Red Wagon" is my favorite keep-going-no-matter-what song (and the video wonderfully complements it). "Half Angel Half Eagle" builds so much tension and then has an exquisite release ("a shudder in the colour of the warehouse wall" sends shivers up my spine _every_ time). "La Jalouse" IS jealousy. "Miss Punta Blanca" IS mindless fun. And "Are We Dancing Now" IS that first spark of love. Anyway, my nominees for songs to _really_ listen to on that album would be "The Life", "Half Angel", and "Are We Dancing Now". Oh, and I'm not saying the first two songs are bad. They're just probably not the best songs with which to get into the album. If she can be Veda's biggest > supporter and still say that, maybe I just need to hear _Path of a Body_. Before I start: I love _Spine_. I loved it from the first listen. I also have _Path of a Body_, and while I liked it well enough, it never really clicked for me. I guess I need to go back and listen to that one now that I have _Spine_. Yes, _Spine_ is a very uncomfortable listen, and the cover art _does_ match the whole feel of the album. (For those who don't know, the cover shows Veda's upper back and the back of her head with a placard reading "Spine" sewn--yes, sewn--between her shoulder blades. Other pictures show various stages of the attachment.) It sounds like the instruments are all just slightly out of tune--not enough to be annoying, but just enough to put you on edge. Which leads me to my theory: Some people will find, like riding in a boat or car, that it makes them sick. Some may not be able to physically listen to the album. Note to anyone who finds it bland: Try listening to it on headphones while reading the lyrics. If you come back and _still_ call it bland then, um, I guess I'll just have to deal with it :) . Anyway, here's my nomination for the most...um...evocative image from the album: "Your death is a white car That light won't stay red for long So take an axe to the wood and wire Blood and broken is your song" I dunno...Something about the impending death (supposedly not known to the driver, but known to the omniscient narrator) just gives me the jeebies. Gee, Val, thanks for inspiring me to listen to this on the way to work today; it's been entirely too long since I've heard it, and I'd forgotten how much I utterly love the album, *especially* the title track. ;-) It's gotta be one of the most thrilling songs I've heard about a deep and utter appreciation for nature. When I bought BBtB, I did another double-take, of the "Hunh? This is *different*" variety. Same with WIWaB. But they're all so great. Just different. I can't say anything about Atlanta yet...I sent a copy of the cd to the p.d. of the local student station (as per suggestion of my friend Damon Young of the Changelings, who get a lot of airplay on that station.) I need to follow up now that they've had it for a week. I'm curious...is the d.j. you talked to the p.d. or m.d. of that station in Philly? I'm wondering how she would have such a handle on whether or not Happy's music is being played much there and how it is impacting listeners. (And I wonder which tracks they're playing.) Case in point: I have a friend at WYEP in Pittsburgh where I used to work (in the 70's!) who doesn't like Happy at all. (She can't seem to tell me why.) When I'm back home in the "Burgh" I call her when she's on the air to request Happy, sometimes disguising my voice! :-) Needless to say, I don't get my request played. D.j.'s at community access and student stations have a lot of discretion about what to play, despite playlists. They have to be targeted if they seem receptive to music in the realm of what Happy is doing...and relationships need to be cultivated with d.j.'s who *are* receptive. Maybe it will take time for radio programmers and listeners (and even some ectophiles) to get used to the new sound...but it won't happen unless the music gets played and folks open their ears and hearts to something quite different, quite unique. It's her folkiest-sounding collection and probably the easiest for the more general listener to get into. The songs and overall sound are more conventionally structured than her later albums, and it's basically very upbeat and shows Veda's love of life which is so apparent when you see her play live. It's a younger-sounding work but not at all immature. I highly recommend it. I guess if you're not one of the clique of 12 who post here regularly, then immediate deletion is the course of choice. This has to be easily the rudest most ungracious list that I have ever been on. I had thought that people who shared in the enjoyment of Happys' music would be more mature than the usual lists. I guess that I was wrong. The regulars know each other so well that they've become isolated from the folks that happen by as a result of their interest in Happy and her music. I often wonder why Happy has only been on here once herself since I've been here. Usually, she speaks through an intermediary. Perhaps she notices the same things that I have ? As a rule, I would just move on and forget about a list like this, but, I do not recall it being like this last year at all. I don't know why it's changed, only that it has. You people need a good stiff dose of the humbles to set you back on course. I'm not saying that you're ALL arrogant, insular and self-absorbed, just most of you who tend to write all the time, mostly to each other, as if this was your private e-mail box. Okay, that's fine, this is your list. Handle it any way that you like. Not for me, thanks. Still no replies. What exactly were you looking for? In the past 5 days, I've seen 3 posts from you. One was about a concert in NYC which won't do much good to people not within driving distance. Apart from a "gee, wish I could go" was I supposed to respond to this? one was some bizarre post about anchovy and pineapple pizza in a radial vs grid cut. Again, what response was I supposed to make? And finally, there was a request for suggestions about songs to use on a sampler. Maybe, maybe I could have answered this, but didn't have time when I first saw the post, and didn't save it. Maybe I was burnt out from similar questions over the last 7 years. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood to think about. There was another recent request for suggestions ("auditory sugarplums") which, as far as I recall, didn't garner any responses, despite coming from a relatively recent regular. > I guess if you're not one of the clique of 12 who post here regularly, > then immediate deletion is the course of choice. Nope; it has nothing to do whether it's from a newcomer; it depends on whether or not a post piques my interest. Look at the huge thread started by Eponine from her very first post. Clearly nobody ignored that one! > This has to be easily the rudest most ungracious list that I have ever > been on. Classic internet hyperbole. When do you bring in references to fascists and/or hitler? > I often wonder why Happy has only been on here once herself since I've been > here. Happy has always, for over 7 years now, maintained her distance from ecto. Once upon a time, Vickie used to send her transcripts, but that was probably 7 years ago. Kevin Bartlett keeps an eye on ecto and posts occasionally. Sharon Nichols probably passes stuff on from time to time. In 7+ years, Happy has only posted once (I think through Sharon's account), asking for folks to e-mail her with info regarding "ectophilic tv shows." She never even posted a follow-up thank-you or anything else. I think it's wholly approiate for an artist to maintain that sort of distance if s/he so chooses. Sorry we're not good enough for you. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 13:01:32 -0500 (CDT) From: "Joseph S. Zitt" Subject: Re: Tossing in the towel A glance at the archive shows that in the past two weeks, you have made exactly two posts, other than the current insult-spewing tantrum. One was a follow up to a joke about grid-cut pizza, about which there wasn't much more to be said. The other was your request, last night, for tracks for a Happy sampler. That's a topic that requires a bit of thought, since we care about Happy, her music, and her fans; to complain there there had been no responses less than a day later might evince a lack of understanding of the world in which many of us actually have jobs and can't work up cogent lists instantly (thought more off-the-cuff comments an be made more easily). As I understand it, the reason that Happy herself does not actively participate in Ecto is that she wishes us to be able to speak (and not speak) as we wish, without the possibility of feeling constrained from hosently discussing her work by her presence on the list. I note that none of the many other recent additions to the list have shown anything near your reaction here. This suggests to the observer that the list and its members are not the problem. Yes, "a good stiff dose of the humbles" is called for. You might try it with a decaf chaser. On Mon, 14 Sep 1998 Penta5@aol.com wrote: > Well, here I am again, posting for about the 15th time. Wermont Subject: Re: In a Doghouse? > i bleeve this is the longe-awaited cd release of the first album, with > either the "fat skier" or "chains changed" ep appended, with unreleased > demos and such from the early part of the muses career. I have CD by them which I picked up someplace last year - maybe a used CD store, or it might have even been Tower, can't remember. It's just called "Throwing Muses" and the tracks are: Call Me, Green, Hate My Way, Vicky's Box, Rabbits Dying, America, Fear, Stand Up, Soul Soldier, Delicate Cutters. Is this the same one you're talking about, that will be on In a Doghouse? I absolutely *love* this CD! It's my favorite of all TM albums! It has a real intensity, and has lots of interesting time signatures and song structures (for example, a song will start out with one melody/rhythm/ structure, and then later veer off into another, and then finally a third section with yet musical "reality" - but it really works - it just sounds like that's the natural path for the song to take). But, I'm very bummed out because the first song, Call Me (one of the best songs on it), got scratched or something and there's all this interference in the music for about a minute during the song. I've tried cleaning it lots of times but it didn't help. (As an aside: this has happened to a number of my CD's, and the problem happens on the same place in every one that gets damaged - the first song has about a minute of interference with the signal. One of the portable CD players - which needless to say I don't use any more - seems to be the culprit. But has anyone ever heard of a CD player damaging CD's?) Anyway, if the new release by TM contains this album, I'm very excited! I'd like to get another copy of that first album sans damage!
