Jill :D *share the music!* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 22:58:32 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Air, "Moon Safari" (a la Stereolab) I stumbled across a French duo called Air that reminded me a bit of Stereolab, but with some interesting twists... They've got the classic synths of Stereolab (moog and korg), and a few of their tracks feature some interesting 'vocoder' vocals by the 2 band members (Jean-Benoit Dunkel and Nicolas Godin) and there are also 2 tracks with guest vocals by Beth Hirsch. There are 2 song samples at the eonline site, as well as the review I copied below: http://www.eonline.com/Reviews/Music/Leaves/0,6,720,00.html When it comes to stylish electronica, French duos have risen to the top. Daft Punk did it by combining stripped-down grooves with terse, witty melodies, while Deep Forest works the ethno-techno World Beat angle. Now, here comes Air, taking an equally fresh approach. Ethereal, sensuous and slightly funky, Air's electronica makes a strong impression without stylistic strain. Because old-school keyboards dominate, most of Moon Safari rings slightly retro. The delicious "La Femme D'Argent," for instance, comes across as a dreamy French version of "Superfly." But "All I Need," which features the poignant and intriguingly soulful vocals of Beth Hirsch, definitely connects with the '90s and beyond. Let Air pervade your consciousness--you won't want to exhale. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 22:54:44 -0400 From: "Valerie Nozick" Subject: Re: various *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 9/13/98, at 8:12 PM, meredith wrote: >> and VICKIE notice how METH offered to get you on the guest list but not >>me. i think METH is probably still bugged that i compared her and >>VALERIE to XENA and GABRIELLE. ah well. :p > >You did? The Brandy CD is only OK, but I love the single "The Boy Is Mine". As for my own digressions from ecto-think, here are some artists that I've never understood the devotion they inspire: Sam Phillips and Victoria Williams -- Yeah, VW writes great songs. But that voice drives me nuts. Same with Sam Phillips. Lisa "sounds like ear" Loeb -- Eep. Someone teach this chick how to write lyrics. Natalie Imbruglia -- Flavor of the month, her lyrics are too insipid for my taste. Jewel -- Count me in amongst the folks who just don't get what the big deal is. I've tried several times to listen to "Pieces of You", but every song sounds exactly alike, and she whines on every one of them. Jane Siberry's "Bound by the Beauty" CD -- When I listen to her sing "I'm bound by the beauteeeeeee", it's like nails scratching on the chalkboard. I've tried really, really hard to get into this, because everything else she does is brilliant. But I just can't listen to this CD without making a mad dash for the Eject button. And my last confession doesn't come under the category of artists I don't like, but things I don't like. I just don't like live concerts. There are some exceptions -- Tori Amos, the Nields, Kate Bush (okay, so I'm dreaming...) and a few others. But I can't stand going to a concert where the artist/band sounds exactly like on record. Inevitably I end up bored, checking out the crowd and my watch every five minutes. ==> Valerie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 23:02:26 -0400 (EDT) From: queen of carrot flowers Subject: taking the 5th I'm going to avoid talking extensively and in great detail about the ecto-oriented artists whose work I loathe, and whose CDs presently take up residence as drink coasters in my swingin' bachelorette pad (read: dorm). A little bird told me Jewel and Milla are popular in these parts, after all. :) I especially don't want to get in hot water when I'm about to post asking for trades. Does anyone out there have a copy of the Nick Drake tribute at St. Ann's from last year? I went and had a spectacular time, and John was talking about doing tape trades for this and I figured that I must have this item. While I can't offer much in return, I'll send you a copy of _Auditory Sugarplums_ or some blanks in return. I'm also looking for a copy of Cindy Lee Berryhill's _Who's Gonna Save the World?_ When I finally tracked down a copy of Lynda Barry's spoken word album, the guy who sold it to me recommended to me on the grounds that CLB was like a more musical Lynda. Sadly, the only album I've been able to find by her is _Naked Movie Star_, which is okay, but it sounds like producer Lenny Kaye wants to make her into a more accessible Patti Smith. Not that there's anything wrong with Patti, but it just seems like a dress that don't fit. However, I've heard that WGStW is a far superior recording, so... Ooh, ooh, and one more trade request: anyone have live Mary Margaret O'Hara material? Some guy brought this up a while ago, and I never heard back from the email I sent him. If some kind soul could help me with this, I would be most appreciative. :) Thanks, gang! - --C. np: Nina Simone - ---- Chelsea, the mod pixie home: away: tugboat@channel1.com odyshape@hotmail.com "I started out as a missionary, but I couldn't find a religion which didn't promise things to some people at the exclsion of others. Speaking for myself, I'm far from being a Goth but I do have some CDs in my collection that some Goths would approve of. Dead Can Dance, Miranda Sex Garden, Siddal, Love Spirals Downwards, the Changelings... Then again, other Goths dislike all this "ethereal stuff", preferring harder, industrial sound. So it all depends. I guess I just don't find partitioning music into lifestyle categories all that helpful. __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1. It sometimes shows up in the throwaway bins. If anyone ever sees it, they should definitely buy it. IF not for themselves, just for the resale value. I'm sure you could sell it on-line for at least $20. Another option (but don't tell anyone, ok?) is to find someone going to one of CLB's shows and have them pick up the special bootleg version. Cindy Lee's been selling copies she's booted herself for $25. She claims that $5 of every disc is going to her legal defense fund :) I deleted her touring schedule, since she's not coming anywhere near me :( But she is roaming the east coast right now. I have an original and a boot (they are really indistinguishable, except for some fuzziness in the artwork and a few tweakings on the labeling).
