However, since I don't corner the market on holiday tunes, I usually end up enlisting the help of my pals to put such an animal out there. What you do is you make me a mix tape with your favourite Christmas songs, preferably with an alternative bent -- no Johnny Mathis or Bing Crosby, please, I've heard "White Christmas" more times than I care to count in this lifetime. I'm thinking more of the funky, endearing Xmess tunes you don't mind hearing every year -- things like "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses or the Pretenders' "2000 Miles". In turn, I will send you out my Christmas tape, complete with a better sleeve than the one you may have received last year. Most of you are pals, and know what kind of music I'm into and may have an idea of what I want to do with the project. However, I do have something of a wish list, that includes some Christmas songs I haven't been able to find. The first three are must-haves, but if you have the rest, that's cool too. "Little Drummer Boy"/Bob Mould and Craig Kilborn (from _The Daily Show_) "Egg Nog"/Luna "2000 Miles/Syd Straw (Tom? Wunderle?) "Song for a Winter's Night"/Sarah McLachlan _Christmas EP_/Mary Margaret O'Hara (and if anyone can help me find a used copy of this...) "The Christians and the Pagans"/Dar Williams "Merry Xmess"/Sun 60 "White Christmas" or "We Three Kings"/Patti Smith _Snow_ single/Cocteau Twins "Christmas Time is Here", "Deck the Halls", etc/REM "Icelandic Christmas Song"/Bjork "Sucking on a Holiday Treat"/Gravel Pit "Suzy Snowflake"/Soul Coughing "Christmas Blues" or "2000 Miles"/Holly Cole "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"/Local H or Chrissie Hynde "I Want An Alien For Christmas"/Fountains of Wayne "I'll Be Hating You For Christmas"/Everclear "Hanukkah Song"/Adam Sandler "Santa Got A DWI"/Sherwin Linton "Christmas at the Drugstore"/Drugstore _Christmas Single_/the Frogs "Santa's Hungry"/Tracy Bonham Sorry to be so greedy...of course, if you have any other songs that I may have missed, feel free to send those along, too. If you haven't heard from me since this summer, I apologise for this being the first thing for you to get -- the past few months have been a whirlwind of getting accepted into school, preparing for this momentous occasion, an moving in. Fear not, the check really is in the mail. Seems like a great name for a program focusing on 20th-century classical music... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Sep 1998 12:35:28 -0400 From: "Michael Curry" Subject: Re: continuing the subject of radio stations , Jane S. & Kate B. I know lots of people who liked _When I Was A Boy_ best, but while it's great for 'phones, I find that it just doesn't get as much play as _No Borders Here_ or BBtB. I still haven't heard _Maria_, but was driving through Philly one night 3 years ago, and the person in the front seat was scanning for radio stations, when I heard That Voice and said, "Wait, stop! That's Jane, and this just *has* to be from _Maria_." 'twas, of course, and sounded cool, but I never did get around to buying the thing. Ah well. > still talking to myself, I realize. only 'til someone answers! > "Hounds of Love" is her pinnacle, in my view. At least, I'd better think its the pinnacle of her work; it's the only album of hers that I've bought 4 times over! I do recommend dropping the bucks on the recent EMI 100 anniversary edition. It's nice to have the b-sides (well, most of 'em...why oh why couldn't they have included the instrumental RUTH, a track I have on vinyl, but desperately want on CD?) in one place, and I like the new mastering... jeff np: _shma israel: the cantorial project_, Arik Rudich nr: nothin'. would you believe I finally forced myself to finish _The Green Mile_? Huh? An expanded Hounds of Love? I hadn't seen or heard of this -- is it in stores? I had all the domestic B-Sides, but that was before my vinyl was ripped off *sigh* n.p.
