If someone knows where that (probably paraphrased) quote came from, he'd be as greatful to know as anyone. Chris was the one who popularized the term on gaffa, which then leaked over here. I have never really be a HUGE nields fan (unlike others on this list). In fact i was pretty much forced by VALERIE and METH to purchase GOTTA OVER GRETTA way back in chicago a couple of years ago. not that i really complained that much, but hey, get both VALERIE and METH against you and it's like XENA and GABRIELE with their swords drawn, me cowering, backed up against the check up counter at RECKLESS RECORDS, i tell ya. they had me shaking in my boots. so i became NIELDS aware way back when. anyway they told me that they would reimburst me if i didn't like the CD, so what was i to do but to purchase it? in the end it turned out to be worth the 5 bucks (plus tax) though in truth i admired the pretty outside cover and packing more than the actually music, though the infectious energy that the album had was certainly a bonus as well, and was quite a perfect compliment to the groovy booklet and CD case. Unfortunately, this promo CD that i have (which i offered to ecto, and who DAVID LIEBSON claimed first) comes with no such nifty packaging (just a plain white label that says THE NIELDS PLAY along with track listings). and alas the music also reflects this white label promo. it isn't as energetic as i was expecting. granted i have only listened to it once or twice, but there didn't seem to be as many stand out tracks as i had hoped. there is still those trademark harmonizations and song structure. but alas most of the songs seem to run together in my head. disappointing, i have to say that the majority of the CD, though not bad, fails to interest me more in THE NIELDS, and if anything, keeps them at the same level of interest in my collection (not bad, occasionally to be pulled out when i feel like listening to something perky, but not an essential) that said, i think the one or two songs that i do think stand out a little bit more than the others include JENNIFER FALLING DOWN and TOMORROWLAND. though buried in the end of the CD, these two gems, i am sure would be quite fun live. i do think that this album won't win any new fans for the NIELDS but certainly won't alienate any of the old ones. pretty much a safe NIELD-esque album if you ask me. (yeah yeah, yoru like "who did?"). oh yeah. track listing is as follows: 1. easy people 2. georgia o 3. in the hush before the heartbreak 4. snowman 5. art of the gun 6. nugehtfora 7. last kisses 8. friday at the circle k 9. check it out 10. nebraska 11.train 12. jennifer falling down 13. innertube 14. tommorrowland 15. (tommorrowland reprise) <- hidden track and that's the 411. YRVYN <-i always wanted a name that started with Y np. PJ HARVEY _IS THIS DESIRE?_ which i will review next time round. it's release date is also september 29 and i can already tell that i like it. more so than TO BRING YOU MY LOVE and DANCE HALL AT LOUSE POINT. though not as much as DRY or RID OF ME. more later. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Sep 1998 02:54:56 -0500 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: Tori in KC At 02:28 PM 8/29/98 -0500, kerry white wrote: >Siren...had to take Vickie's word for it later...I've not >heard Siren... Sorry. I don't know why I wrote down Siren. Thanks to John for identifying Merman for us. I didn't have a very good time at the show, so there's not much I can say about it other than the music was killer good (I love the band sound on most of the songs). It was great meeting Lisa and Kerry again, and Greg for the first time. I'm sorry to have missed meeting Riphug and John. I'm sad to say that Kansas City was my final Tori concert. The rude "fans" who feel they just have to stand up during the whole show have finally won. I'm tired of jumping through hoops to see Tori (staying out all night - twice, once for tickets and then again for seats - for the pre-tour show, and traveling to another city for this one) and not getting to see much more than a glimpse of her. (Well, this time I saw her a few times. During the pre-tour show I didn't get to see her *at all*.) Both times I might as well have just played a bootleg really loud at home, it would have been cheaper and less stressful. It's not a big deal though. I've seen Tori many many many times, and I'll always treasure that first time, back in 1992, when she played a teeny tiny club (Schubas in Chicago) to an awed, respectful audience of 100something. I wasn't a fan going in, but I was a forever fan coming out. Those were the golden days when there were only a few people hanging afterwards to talk to her, and you could have a real conversation with her. I was also at the very last record signing she ever did, where she not only recognized me, she acted elated at the Happy CDs I gave her. Over the years I've met Tori quite a few times, and I've gotten more than my share of Tori Hugs[tm] (though never, to my knowledge, at the expense of someone who had never met her and was waiting too), so I feel satisfied that I experienced many Toriences that the newer, standing-up-even-though- they're-in-the-frigging-FRONT-ROWS!-and-short- people-behind-be-damned, ruder "fans" never will. Ha! (Petty thoughts of revenge can occasionally be good for the soul, yeah, sure it can, yeah.) The music sure was good though. Did Tori have a band with her? :-/ Vickie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Sep 1998 03:05:03 -0500 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Meow question Is anyone on Ecto dealing with a diabetic cat? We spent a dismal, depressing and teary train ride back to Chicago on Sunday not knowing if he'd still be alive when we got home. He was, even though he had near liver and kidney failure. He's been diagnosed with diabetes and he's being kept under observation at another animal hospital. Needles freak me out, but I have to get used to giving Harvo insulin shots. Sorry to hear about your feline friend. It's a tough thing to go thru, I know. A couple of years ago my partner and I cared for our favorite cat who was diagnosed with Diabetes.. The care was easy but time-consuming, and he was with us for almost a whole year longer. It probably would have been longer, but there turned out to be many complications....I miss him sooo much still . As in humans, one of the best things you can do to treat diabetes is to monitor the blood sugar levels. We tried using urine strips, but almost lost the cat after consistently over-injecting him with insulin because of inaccurate readings with the strips. It's my understanding that normally the strips are "OK", but this wasn't a normal kitty, and he went into diabetic shock (he was fine after a glucose injection and a couple of days of recuperating in the vet hospital). So we bought a glucometer and tested his blood directly. It was a fairly easy thing to do, but he was an exceptionally mellow cat, so YMMV. We simply used one of the insulin needles to prick a vein in his ear (it didn't hurt him) and then collected a drop of blood and tested it, regulating the insulin up or down depending on the results (it was usually fairly regular). The other thing to watch out for is Ketones, which are toxins that build up when the insulin level gets too low over a prolonged period of time (I think). We usually checked it (with urine strips) only when he was acting abnormally. Basically, it takes a lot of time and love. Twice a day we checked his blood sugar levels and gave him insulin. We had a great vet (in Philly) who was up on a lot of the latest stuff, and went out of her way to find out more when she needed to and really worked with us. It really made a difference. What size venues are the shows being scheduled at? I've never been to the Painted Bride, but I think that the Keswick seats around 2000 people. Please tell me that it's not the 25th! I'm going to be out of town from September 25th to October 1st, and it looks like I'm already missing the Bob Mould show. Well, if it is the Keswick, make sure you get somebody to go to the Keswick box office for tickets. The Keswick is an excellent venue, but I seem to remember that their policy was to hold the best seats for direct box office sales, even when the tickets are made available through Ticketmaster. I was always fond of that policy... Mostly since I lived ten minutes from the Keswick at the time. I managed to get second and third row seating for Tori, Sarah, and Dead Can Dance that way. Of course, I don't live ten minutes from there any more. But unless they've changed their ticketing policy, showing up at the box office on the day of sale is definitely the way to go. - - Tony n.p. Because that's the weekend I'll be in Chicago. And as anyone who knows my concert track record can attest, if there's a don't-miss concert, it's guaranteed to be on a weekend I absolutely cannot go. ==> Valerie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Sep 1998 14:36:27 -0400 From: Bob Brown Subject: Re: HR Tour Info? >What size venues are the shows being scheduled at? The Keswick seats 1266 unless they put the chairs in the pit. That adds about 100.
