I rented it on the strength of how much I liked "Fargo" (the only other Coen brothers movie I'd seen) and I wasn't dissapointed, even though it was not much like Fargo at all. It was more a long, rambling train-wreck of a movie that remained interesting and engaging all the way through even so. Uniquely suited to the Ecto temperment is what I thought when I saw your mention of it, and I was wondering if that impression was correct. r. n. dominick -- cinnamon@one.net np: "Rearmament" (yes, I finally bought the one HR CD I was missing...) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 11:01:57 -0500 From: Mark Lowry Subject: Re: Ectophile Guide questions Neile Graham replied: > Anyway, I hope this answers your questions, Mark. How? And what is Two?) The Advocate cover story ("Between Rock and a Hard Place", May 12, 98) says that their exclusive interview was Rob's official coming out. In fact, I remember news/wire reports after that article saying that he had officially come out. And yes, people were very surprised, but *we* always knew, I mean, his anthem was "Hell Bent for Leather." Pansy Division's Jon Ginoli was "instrumental" in bringing him out. They met at a SF bar in 97, and Halford actually performed with PD at several Gay Pride events last year. It briefly mentions his new band Two, which was signed to Trent Reznor's label and released the album _Voyeurs_ in March. They started a U.S. tour in April. Chi Chi LaRue directed the first video "I Am a Pig." I still haven't seen that album/video or anything about the band at all. Rob says that the guys in JP knew he was gay from the very beginning, and it was just a well-kept secret. After concerts, the bandmates would have all these women and Rob would just to his room alone. He did occasionally have boyfriends and would sometimes bring them on the road. But it was all very hush-hush. > But I've seen several TV reports on Ripper, and they're wonderful and > hilarious. Talk about stumbling into good fortune after appropriate > hard work! Yeah, he was just a regular guy in Akron who fronted a JP cover band and got discovered by the band, almost by a fluke. Supposedly, even the most die-hard of JP fans like this guy and many say he sounds just like RH. JP is playing in Fort Worth at a very classy, intimate and somewhat small downtown club (where I've seen intimate shows by Jane Siberry, Michelle Shocked, Me'Shell NdegeOcello and, um, Run DMC; and where CPR played on their tour and I'm *praying* Samson sends Happy :) on Oct. 15. I'm hope I get to review the show, I'm rather curious. I was joined at the show by the (in)famous Chuck and Joe and while we were having dinner who should arrive but fellow ectophile John, having made the painful trek up from the city. Susan was joined on stage by Greg Anderson (of Whirlygig), who played guitars and bouzouki, and Jennifer Vincent, who played double bass and cello. While I had seen Greg perform with Susan on several occasions this was my first time seeing Jennifer, and while she is talented it was just damned strange to see a double bass up on stage without Lindsay attached to it and to see a cello without Michelle. Jennifer did a good job but, imo, she's not quite in either Lindsay or Michelle's league. Anyway, Susan played a couple of great sets... Bonny Boy Jericho When My Love and I Parted Daddy's Little Girl Fuck You The Mountain Streams Bones In London So Fair ----- Westlin' Winds I Know I Know Cragie Hills Banks of Claudy Seven Cold Glories The Chariot Salome Albatross Snakes ----- Seoladh na nGamhna (Driving the Calves) My Bonnie I hadn't heard "When My Love and I Parted" before and it's another wonderful addition to the list of songs Susan sing unaccompanied. It was also my first chance to hear "The Chariot," a really amazing song based on the Emily Dickenson poem of the same name. The evening wrapped up with a sing-along version of "My Bonnie," a topical choice given the weather on the east coast this past week. The thing I noticed the most during the sing-along was the clear, beautiful voice coming from the back of the room, a voice which belonged to the woman (whose unusual name escapes me) who sings backup for Sloan Wainwright. It was a great show, and one I appreciated even more now that Susan's growing popularity means she is spending more time touring outside of the northeast US. There was also news of yet another collection of upcoming releases that will contain both new and old material. I'm sure the entire list will show up on the web page, but the highlights were the upcoming (probably October) release of an album that Susan and Lindsay recorded back in early 1997 and news of a future album with the working title of Bushes & Briars 2 (the search for a good name is in progress). Sorry I didn't get to meet up with you Kerry, Vickie and Lisa :( We were there at the venue before the show started and we walked around a little bit looking for Happy Rhodes t-shirts and yelling out "Java Ho! Java Ho!" (probably looked pretty stupid, eh?) Oh, by the way......what was with all those young girls with the angel wings? Is that a Tori thing? Anyway, I had forgotten to bring your seat locations with me, and all I could remember was Terrace L, so we concentrated on looking up at the top of the venue between sets. We also did some walking around right behind the orchestra pit section, so I guess we were physically close to you, Lisa. My friend isn't quite the music lover I am, so she was ready to leave at about the point of "Hey, Jupiter." She had been bothered by the many cigarette smokers around us, too, so we left early. But on our way out, I asked one of the security guards if I could take just one photo of Tori since I was leaving anyway and they wouldn't have to kick me out for taking pictures. He said "sure", so I hope my one and only Tori concert photo will turn out. Even though I had a telephoto lens, I was probably too far away to get much of anything. Anyway, sorry to have missed you all (and you for the second time, Lisa)......but I hope you had fun together! There was a live video from the Big World tour, which I bought, but the sound quality was so poor I returned it the next day (okay, I regret it, but hey, I was young & foolish. . . ). The video came with one of those new-fangled 3 inch CD singles, but I don't recall what was on it. Joe had a marvelous woman playing latin percussion and sing bg for him around the time of Body & Soul, but I don't know of any other live recordings. Maybe a B-side. . . ?
