Valerie found a *way* cool site called Imagine Radio, at . You pick the artists, and it creates a playlist based on a random selection of tracks from various albums by those artists. It's not as good as programming your own radio show, but it's pretty close. We've created an ecto channel with the ecto artists we could find on the site (no Happy, alas, but if enough people suggest that she be added I'm sure something could happen :). It's pretty cool. Jill :D, where were you??? First, let me say that Starlight is a wonderful venue. It's an outdoor theater located next to the Kansas City Zoo. Chris had secured tickets in the very front section. Eighth row center. Whatta guy!! Vickie has the setlist, but it was basically one incredibly strong song after another. She opened with Precious Things. God, Cornflake Girl, and Spark followed (not sure what the order was). The song that surprised me the most and also blew me away was Waitress from UtP. She closed the show with it. I've always secretly loved that song (does that make me evil?). Her encores (two of them) included Raspberry Swirl, which also had incredible energy. I'm drawing a blank on the other songs she did as encores (Vickie, help me out!) The band was very tight. The guitarist was especially interesting as he was there adding just the right texture, but never overpowering or overplaying. Just right, IMHO. Notably missing from the setlist was Crucify. I had also secretly hoped for either Leather or Happy Phantom, but 'twas not to be. Overall, I was surprised (and pleased, given my personal preferences) by the presence of songs from UtP and lack of representation from BfP. I think Hey Jupiter and BfP were the only songs she played from it...could be wrong, though. There were a couple of medley things going on that were so radically different from the album versions that we were only able to determine the presence of some songs by the lyrics that popped up. Even then, we weren't sure. I never saw Tori during the "girl and her piano" tours, so I have no way of comparing, BUT, I cannot imagine that the impact of some of these songs could have been remotely as close. I realize, of course, that there was an entirely different feel of intimacy to those shows, but I liked the intensity that was present last night. Different strokes, I guess. Bottom line--if you get a chance to see her this time around...DO! It may not be the same, but that doesn't mean that it's not worth experiencing. OK...time for a nap. Sort of. I suppose I should have sent this directly to Neile, but since I'm assuming most of the stalwarts on this list are involved in the Guide's evolution ... here goes. Before reading all the disclaimers (which goes back to my childhood when I always jumped in without reading the instructions), I wondered why several great artists I consider Ecto (or what I now know as Ecto ... I've had my own labels for years -- my friends and I have always refered to the Tori/Kate/Happy/Jane types as Suicidal Ethereal Women, or SEW artists, but that's another story) were not included in the list, or at least not when I conducted a search. Namely: Diamanda Galas, Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Helium and, on the male side, David Sylvian and Nick Cave. Then I realized that the list is not finished (yes, I saw that DG, PJH, H and DS entries are forthcoming), and, by its nature, can never be finished since there will always be new Ecto artists and needed manpower to get these entries in. I'm sure everyone has his/her own definition of what Ecto music is. Personally, my categorizations would be much narrower than what's represented on the list. It would certainly feature the Goddesses, the Beautiful & Fierces, the Ethereals, the Experimentals ... and a lot of artists in the other genres listed. Here's the question. If I'm an Ectophile and I happen to like an artist and/or album/song who/that is seemingly not Ecto (and obviously, that would be my opinion), then does that automatically quality that artist to be categorized as Ecto? My reason for this question mainly comes from the entry for Paula Abdul and the forthcoming entry for EMF. I mean, so, ok, someone likes a song of Paula's, but ... huh? That's not a slam on that type of music, because I *love* a lot of R&B ... I'm crazy about Erykah Badu and Me'Shell NdegeOcello and I have Janet Jackson and Mary J. Blige in my collection, and I *like* them. But personally, I wouldn't consider any of them as Ecto. And yes, I realize that there's a big grey area when it comes to Ecto music. Many of the listed artists seem on the border -- Curve, B-52s and to a greater extent, ABBA (?!?) -- but there's a number of entries that I simply don't understand (the aforementioned Abdul, EMF, and Amy Grant, who, earlier in her career, had a few songs that I like). To me, they just seem *so* beyond that grey area. Metallica might as well be listed. Again, that's not because *I* don't particularly like them. I mean, there's artists listed who I realize are Ecto but, personally, I can't stand (Jewel for one, but we've already done that thread). And I'm not trying to slam anyone's individual tastes, because individuality is the spice ... well, let me stop there before the cheesy life-lesson cliches start. I'm an Ectofile, and I also love LL Cool J, Asylum Street Spankers, Jane's Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, Prince/Artist, but, does that qualify them for the list? So, after all that convoluted mess, I guesss my real question is, Am I missing the point of the Ectophile's Guide? Does anyone else think that Paula Abdul, EMF and Amy Grant would not be Ecto? On another subject, did anyone catch Mary Cutrufello on Leno the other night? She's from Houston, and I've seen her several times at small clubs here in Dallas and Fort Worth. She's fabulous, and the new album (which Leno said is her debut, although it really isn't) is terrific. Just wondering. Mark, who is new to the Ecto list, and, for that matter, the internet ... and who admits that he occasionally doesn't understand why other people don't think like he does. np: _Beneath the Icy Floe_ (a sampler from Projekt, an indie goth/ethereal label) nr: the new issue of GQ, because there's a *funny* story about the guy who took Rob Halford's place in Judas Priest ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 16:40:57 -0500 (CDT) From: The Watcher Subject: Re: Tori in KC At 02:28 PM 8/29/98 -0500, you wrote: >I had nothing to write on and used mnenomics to try and hold the >set-list. > Caveat emptor: >Precious Things.... >God..... >Siren...had to take Vickie's word for it Nup, twas Iieee. Keller" Subject: Snowpony [Since people are asking about Snowpony, I thought I'd resurrect a never-published bit I wrote about them when I saw them play in New York at Arlene's Grocery during the 1997 CMJ music festival--September, I think.] When I arrived Snowpony had already started playing. The group includes Debbie Googe, ex-bassplayer from My Bloody Valentine, and Katherine Gifford, ex-keyboardist from Stereolab; I could see the two of them when I entered the crowded small bar, and the drummer, but I couldn't see the guitarist whose rhythmic riffs were driving the song. When I had wormed my way closer to the stage I discoverd that there wasn't a guitar player: it was all on tape. The band consists of the drummer, bassist, and Gifford on vocals (no instrument); my respect for them dropped a notch immediately. It's a cprejudice, no mistake, but any band that has more (maybe much more) than 50% of its music on tape doesn't strike me as much of a (live) band. Stylistically...there's a spectrum of styles in the British Isles right now: dance-pop like Moonshake or Laika, trip-hop like Portishead or Sneaker Pimps, dream-pop like Slowdive or Lush (or My Bloody Valentine), Britpop (which Lush also touches on) like Sleeper or Echobelly. All these styles bleed into one another at the edges; and the perfect demonstration of this is that Snowpony ranges all over this rather wide map. Some of their songs have persistent guitar figures (like the first one I heard); others have more plush textures; some have minimalist keyboard figures; others denser, more dissonant textures. The rhythm section is solid, but the songwriting is fairly routine, and Gifford (who was dressed in a gown that showed off her armband and shoulderblade tattoos) has a pretty good voice but not strong or distinctive enough to carry the band anyway. (In Sneaker Pimps, for example, Kelly Dayton is similarly merely a good singer, but the songwriting is much stronger.) I have to mention the very last song, with a more funklike bassline and really good bitonal keyboard harmonies, I really liked; but I'd already gotten a so-so impression from them, so it didn't change my mind very much. They're playing Brownies next week before they leave the country, and I might try to catch them again just to get my head straight about them; but here's another factor. They handed out free sampler CDs from their American label Radioactive at the door, and the Snowpony track comes directly after an Elysian Fields track; Jennifer Charles' much superior vocals show up Gifford all too easily, and to boot there are at least three bands I've never heard of on there with better vocalists as well. Put me down as a curmudgeon, but Snowpony has probably lost me already. [Pay attention to those "might"s and "probably"s: I did in fact go back and see them a second time--with much the same reaction--and, when I saw one of their singles used, I bought it--with much the same reaction. Still, I saw this week that their album was out, and remain curious about it; and they're playing in town soon, and I might go see them again; so something about them has kept my ambivalent opinion from going totally negative.] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 22:01:12 EDT From: JavaHo@aol.com Subject: Re: Tori in KC Kerry exclaims: << >I< said iieee, Vickie said Siren, I caved. >> He did say that. (yeah, yeah, I'm sure they all knew for years, hell, > everyone else did, and I also know that Halford has had side projects > for years) The GQ article doesn't much go into Halford, but I read the Advocate article a coupla months ago. Halford quit the band in '92 to "pursue other interests," and he didn't come out until last year I think, after JP had already hired the new guy. Most people (read: the media) think Halford came out to get the publicity for his new project, Two. If that was the case, then it's the ol' "If a tree falls in the forest" scenario (If you come out in order to gain publicity/exposure, and your career still sucks, does it matter?) But, if he came out because he truly wanted to be himself, then that's cool, even if his career didn't really take off. (Have *you* heard of Two?) I believe it was the latter ... the guys in Pansy Division supposedly encouraged him to come out. The GQ article about his replacement, "Ripper" Owens, is hilarious. Lots of cool metalspeak. Thanks, Jeff, that's it exactly. The main point being that it's The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music and not The Guide to Good Ecto Music. While the ectophiles focus on "ecto"ish music and it's our common ground, we have wide-ranging tastes and I think that's a huge part of what makes the list (and thus the Guide) so interesting. And (thank heaven) no one on ecto runs the show, drawing lines saying this is ecto and this isn't, or that we are allowed to discuss some artists and not others (though often lack of response or outright disagreement sometimes makes people feel as though someone does--I STILL don't understand why you're not all our there buying Gabriel Yacoub's discs as I've been trying and trying to sell everyone on him from the moment I joined the list in '92). There is often a consensus about what is good and what is bad, what is mainstream "ecto" and what is farther out there, but you only get an idea of what the consensus is by reading and adding up what everyone has to say, positive and negative, about particular artists. That's how the Guide works, too. Some of the entries are skimpy because there simply hasn't been much comment about the band/artist (for example, the Paula Abdul one) and no one has volunteered to fill in missing information, but that says something in itself, doesn't it? About the only thing I don't want to include is mainstream classical music--I could wear out my fingers HTML-izing which version of Bach's Cantatas everyone prefers but I'd rather leave that to other sites, as classical music genereally doesn't get much discussion on ecto and there are many printed guides to classical music, some of which are surely now online. Of course, if someone volunteered to take on that task that would be cool. Other than that, pretty much anything goes as far as I'm concerned. And there will be a Nine Inch Nails entry, eventually. I have 1,200 files on individual artists/bands waiting to be edited for the Guide that I'd like to think will all eventually be there. The bulk of those files are _very_ brief, like the Paula Abdul entry. Others are longer. I like to think that entries for the bands and artists that most ectophiles care about will get there first, but I'm also trying to clear out the files starting at the beginning of the alphabet, hence the appearance of the Paula Abdul and ABBA files before Jewel or other artists that have had a lot of comment on ecto. Anyway, I hope this answers your questions, Mark. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 00:51:33 -0400 From: "Jeffrey C. Honestly, I picked it up from Chris Williams (er, it *was* Chris, wasn' it?), Vickie's other half, who started a rather blistering thread on rec.music.gaffa a number of years ago, in which he referred to record company execs as squid. I'm not sure where he got it from, or if it was just a metaphor he happened to pick at the time. Anyone remember? Sounds like she's been changing her set around quite a bit from show to show, which I understand is rare for arena acts. When I saw her she didn't do Silent All These Years at all, but did Me and a Gun in the solo section. I'm guessing that since her show is pretty much visually static (*not* a criticism) it makes it possible for them to change things on the fly without causing the lighting, sound, and effects folk to completely spazz. I doubt that an ounce of change could have happened in, say, David Bowie's Sound and Vision tour or many of the recent Pink Floyd tours, except for improvisation within very strict structures, since they were so closely tied to preset materials. They were probably locked down in some ways that Tori probably wasn't in her strictly solo shows, but she seems to have hit a middle ground quite well. n.p. Peter Gabriel: Passion n.r.
