I remember him being out from the first I heard of him in the US but the press here made it sound like he was accepted in the UK (a hit in general) as an artist. Which sounded like he was a hit for his music first and then later it was known across the board he was gay. And artists should become successful for their art based on its own merits and not the artists sexuality - likewise, people shouldn't be rejected simply on the grounds of their sexual orientation - - which is of course what did happen to others before the gay movement made enough headway for people like....Rufus Wainwright. Well, I've been constantly playing Happy's cd, and I only played Rasputina's new release one time. And their cd is excellent...better than their first! But Happy's is sooo much better. Yes, and that's not an accurate name at all for Jones considering she is best known for, well, this isn't really an ecto-type subject...not performing, rather than performing in large quantities (which would earn the name slutmeister.) The mailing list I've set up for people running indie or solo labels, or otherwise putting out less-than-major-market-sized-releases, is now online and getting rolling. It might come in useful for many of us from ecto and elsewhere to swap information. Here's the info from its (embryonic) Web page: Welcome to The Local Music List. This list was created to provide an avenue for indie artists and people in the music industry to exchange information. Some examples of how this list can be used are: Arranging shows in other parts of the country Asking for recording tips Exchanging tips about packaging and marketing recordings. Finding out about reliable manufacturers Finding new band members At this point there are really no rules for the list. Just use your best judgment about what you send. Its a brilliant six-song piece of beauty. The style is sort of slowcore (so that would mean Low comparisons I guess - haven't heard Low yet though), made up of acoustic and ocassional electric guitars, piano, bass, cello, percussion, and sometimes some studio trickery and programming. However, the band manage to take these instruments to hell and back, creating alternately beautiful and disturbing sounscapes for Merida Sussex's hauntingly deadened vocals and frankly scary lyrics. To get an idea of the sound, just look at the band members. Merida Sussex, singer for The Paradise Motel writes and sings all songs, which means the EP is much like a Paradise Motel EP, except that Merida here seems to be concentrating on a more chaotic, unpolished and at times consciously ugly sound than the Motels are known for. In fact it sounds like the kind of music the Motels might have made before they started recording, as its even slower and more claustrophobic than their earliest releases. This is a great chance to hear Merida's talents, as she has previously only written one song for the Motel's, yet turns out to be just as talented and as dark as the other writers - if not darker. To help her with this are Adalita (singer and writer for Magic Dirt - who seems to be providing the grunting guitar) Kirsty Stegwazti (local Ani-type singer, here plays cello) and some of the band from Arossa (who I've heard mine a similar field to the Motels), plus a few others whose origins escape me at the moment. Those elsewhere might not get the significance of this, but in Australia this is akin to a supergroup. This has made me really anxious to hear Arossa's stuff, so I'll probably get back to you all with (hopefully) another recommendation. Anyway, if you want really really dark slowcore at its best, with some excellent musicianship, singing and lyrics, I suggest you RUN to the record shop and pick it up. The final song Every Blue Flower has to be heard to be believed.
