And now I get to say, "Yeah, what Neal 'n Neile said." I pushed Jewel Kilcher on my friends for years, and then suddenly found myself disgusted by the direction she was taking, unable to listen to the re-recordings her songs as singles or, say, her SNL performance (which I found unlistenable). Unlike the N[ei|a]l[e]s, I *do* like _Pieces of You_ quite a bit. But I also agree that I'm happier when I'm listening to tapes of "rarities." The stuff that ended up on the first 2 EDA tapes is pretty amazing. jeff (wondering what new Jewel material would sound like, and wondering if he would even care...though he *does* still wish he could hear her on HFS...as long as it's cool old stuff, like what she did live for them when they cared enough to have her in the studio) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 22:44:58 -0400 From: "Robert Lovejoy" Subject: "Til The Dawn Breaks all around you! I just Love this song, one of my all time faves. Much has been said about its emotional/musical merits already, so I have one more facet to point out. Those of us fortunate to have Dolby Pro Logic should be aware that the first three HTR discs actually decode. I know Pat didn't plan it, and it's kind of a random phase anomaly, but listening to this track in surround mode is awesome! The thunder peals from all around... With Ecto, the albums begin to fold in sonically, and Warpaint puts no info to the rear. This is not to denigrate the recordings in any way. The stereo mixes are uniformly excellent, just noting the accidental and quite pleasing surround of the first three albums. Yea and verily, loud is also a good thing. Laura has already pointed out what KaTe was doing. Happy recorded "The Wretches Gone Awry" at 17. By, what, 20? she had released 3 albums of sublime material. Milla Jovovich was 16 when she wrote most of _The Divine Comedy_. Sinead O'Connor was, er, I think 19 when _The Lion and the Cobra_ came out. Frankly, as much as I love some of the old Jewel material, the idea of her ever managing something like "Troy" seems unlikely to me. The list goes on.... jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 19:59:00 -0700 From: Birdie Subject: Re: womyn's music queen of carrot flowers wrote: > Sorry, this was one long rambling, and it probably doesn't say much. If you don't know who they were - you may want to do a search at one of the on-line stores. UK band - mid-80's. They should go or be in the ecto files..... I haven't listened to cris williamson, holly near (except, I did wind up seated and standing up next to her at a Liza Minnelli show a number of years ago - before Liza started drinking et al again - I really have no idea what she is up to now- Holly) nor have I listened to much folk music since the 70's. It is not to my taste, but I respect it for what it was and still is to some people. One of the things that I do feel is lacking is people playing music to address the issues in their lives in a powerful way....Rap music can be brilliant at that as can folk. I can respect just about anything as long as it comes from real people with real emotions and thoughts to share....which doesn't mean I have to like it. I don't have to like something to respect it. I've also watched people totally self-destruct who used entertainment as a means of escapism. In otherwords, if you use music or cinema or whatever artform as a way to avoid dealing with real problems in your life - the problems don't get solved and maybe drugs and drink get tossed into the picture to help blot them out further. So you know - art can be theraputic or completely destructive - for either the artist and/or the fan (s). My own tastes (last month) ran from Prefab Sprout to....Beatrice Lillie...to Lambert Hendricks & Ross....to...Carmen Miranda....to...The Artist now The Sqiggle...to...The B-52's...to....The Dream Academy...to....I'll probably put on "The Bandera's" next. None of those artists are flavor of the week - month - year as I'll still enjoy them 10 years down the road. And as far as radio goes....I just got a CB radio and can get 7 weather channels on it. I am completely excited. Between the CB, Cassette deck, and CD player in the truck - I'll never have to listen to the radio again. Any ecto-ish ham radio groups going? That will be the next thing..... Birdie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 23:02:35 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: New music to look forward to...... I think the Melissa Etheridge list was responsible for my introduction to her music. After several bootleg tapes only whetted my appetite, I discovered she was opening for Peter Himmelman at Schuba's, a popular local tavern/venue. The tickets were going on sale the weekend after St. Patrick's day, but on St. Paddy's day I came home & found someone had broken into my house ... needless to say, I didn't get around to calling for tickets to the show ... so the night of the show, I went to the club & hung around outside. Normally there were those people who sell extra tickets ... not this night; Himmelman is tremendously popular here, I guess. Anyhow, my introduction to *live* Ferrick was standing at the podium outside the music space, talking to Mike Schuba, and listening through the door. Since she was "only an opening act", there was a lot of coming & going thru the door - so I had a quite good view of the woman in the blue shirt up there with the beat-up guitar. ... trying to remember the year, and it must have been either 93 or 94. In spring '95, I came back from a 10-day trip to New York City to hear Joan Baez record her "Ring Them Bells" album and went from the airport to my house to Schubas - and finally got to here Melissa while sitting in the same room! >Anyway. > >So when did Ferrick "officially" come out? um, can't recall for sure - somewhere around the Advocate story, maybe?? and no, my "filing system" consists of stacks of paper in file boxes which are stacked on top of each other in front of the filing cabinet into which they were supposed to be neatly placed ... so I can't track that issue down right now. >On a side-ish note, I find it humorous how matter-of-factly every one >is speaking about Indigo Girls and their sexual orientation. today I was thinking about this whole discussion and also being amused. yes, I *have* listened to music or gone to hear artists *because* they were [allegedly or out] gay/lesbian (I suppose the curiousity of how they address - if they even do - my particular life/concerns/whatever it is that moves one about music) - and occasionally have found real gems. But certainly have "discovered" an even greater amount of music from various other recommendations. And started thinking about how *weird* this whole topic thread is! kinda like playing "E!" or "Hard Copy", speculating about orientation and not really relating it to these same artists' music. before flames start, if any, I *do* understand where the question came from: if I understood it, the motivation was the impact of homophobia on artists' marketability on a broad scale. extrapolating from the various 'suppositions' and realities of the responses here, it appears that its pretty much a death sentence to starting artists targeting mainstream. (which I personally believe extends to generalized homophobia in society ...) but then, its too late for me to be coherent on this, so on to the real point of this reponse ... *** >Er, anyway again. A condundrum I'm totally familiar with. My own use of art is sort of prismatic -- I can't say I use it for escapism entirely, but sometimes listening to music or reading a book or seeing a film helps me to better understand myself and what's around me, or makes me feel less lonely. I could regale the list with tales of being in a suburban high school where the only "real" thing to me was the first Tori Amos album and Sugar's _Copper Blue_, but there's someone like that everywhere. I'm in a more centralized place where there are also freaks, so I don't need to depend on semi-inanimate objects whose feelings run as deep as my own to provide me with company or with friends, but I'm thankful that those were there when that was all I had, because they helped me function now.
