(capsulizing - I've never been impressed by the strident positions taken by several of the glossy lesbian magazines, particularly Deneuve/Curve and now Girlfriends, or much of the editorial material published in Advocate. my brain tends to lump them all in the same category as People and Entertainment Weekly, just for a more specialized audience! frequently shallow coverage of superficial topics (they can no more write an interview with a performer without bringing their sexuality and partner into it than can the "straight" pop magazines), often angry tirades against whatever establishment has more/unearned than the writer (including backbiting at other components of the lesbian/bi/gay community), impressed by pose and image (gee, just like mainstream mags)... and quite frankly am embarassed at the image they're creating of *me* by the negative stereotypes they embody) as to the artists who have appeared - year #1 did include Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, etc. amongst the names on some legs. definitely sure things/draws. 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu wrote: > >Emmylou Harris, whoever it is that sings "Love is a Battlefield" >(I can't remember her name right now and it's driving me crazy :), Pat Benatar obviously you don't watch those music video channels - they periodically resurrect that video during their 'women in rock' "special features", designed to show their recognition of the feminine side of music ... as to the way the local artists auditioned *this* year. For last year's tour, many of the 'local artists' were typically selected by the *male* manager who was coordinating things for Sarah (no I won't reveal my source for that bit :-). *His* proteges & favourites. Somehow auditions in front of radio folks (ok, mainstream radio) and venue folks in different cities seems to give locals a *bit* more chance. And the local names, whether 'sure things' already signed or not, add a draw for local advertising. *and* hopefully deliver back to the community, in new audiences for these artists from people who 'discovered' them at the dreaded lilith. as to bland, vanilla - (ranting on one of my own pet peeves) - don't forget the current 'folk' fandom, and their embracing the bevy of current girl/guy-with-guitar singer/songwriters eloquently spewing their guts of the *same* introspective, self-oriented thoughts ... this same community of fans are apalled at what goes for bland music on the mainstream radio and that *their* special contributions to music don't get the recognition and exposure that they deserve, because they're so unique, different and deep ... sometimes I've frightened myself when I realized how close to the edge of rabid obsession I really *was* about some artist & their music ... sharing, vocalizing and prosletyzing about them is fine, but I do have to allow acquaintences to have their own tastes, and not denigrate them - just not listen to them! oh yeah - Vickie's was about the word "womyn" and the whole radical extremist position on eliminating the spread of the male patriarchal establishment think I'll go off & be quiet for awhile again ... and try to be rational and reasoned the next time!
