I transcribed, to the best of my abilities, the new tracks on the album and posted them to ecto along with my usual interpretations of the songs, both in terms of meaning and style. I've been a lurker on this list for more than a year now, and want to give thanks to everyone, including if not especially Meredith, for the many wonderful recomendations made here. I have enjoyed many artists that I would never have discovered, if not for this list. There are probably at least as many definitions of "ecto" as there are list members, and I doubt that any of them would include Dan Bern. I know mine wouldn't. I discovered Dan Bern through his association with Ani DiFranco who produced his last album. I bought that album "50 Eggs" sound unheard - an expensive habit I learned here. It took me a while to aquire a taste for Dan, but seeing 3 shows (including one with Utah Phillips) in 2 days probably catagorizes me as a fan. What I can say is that if you like Ani Difranco - particularly her edgier material, then there is a chance you might like Dan. The word "irreverent" doesn't really do justice to Dan's work, but does at least indicate the direction you should think in. Well, if you have Issue 10 of Rhodeways, as I (cough) do, you would have the lyrics in your possession, as I (cough) did. I plead throwing the issue into my Happy box full of everything Happy related, it getting covered up, us moving and keeping the box sealed until recently when we bought a file cabinent specifically for the contents, getting the Rhodeways/TIs all out and putting the issues in order, but not flipping through and re-aquainting myself with what each issue had in it. I'll scan or type them in and let everyone know when they're available. Vickie ps, something I'm sure would amuse Happy to no end, but that caused me to blow steam....At some point in the last couple of years, one of our cats (I don't know which one, luckily) peed on my HTR box. After performing in the very charming town of Sylva, in the western part of NC, I decided to do some hiking off the Blue Ridge Parkway on my way back home. I had been hiking in the middle of nowhere for 3 hours and hadn’t seen another hiker in over an hour, when I spotted some droppings on the road. Some big droppings. I I looked up and there was a black bear farther down the trail, which proves the point that bears do indeed… you know. Once I realized "I was not alone" I broke the Olympic record in sprinting back down the trail and back to civilization. Neon lights, highways, and fast food franchises never looked so appealing ;-) As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one summer, I received some nice reviews of the CD "just in time" from The Independent Weekly (4 ½ out of 5 whiskey bottles! yay!), the Ectophiles Guide to Good Music, and 181.4 Degrees From the Norm. I'll get to love it, I'm sure, if I just stop playing Rearmament instead. . . ^_^ For those who asked about the new Shonen Knife disc, "Happy Hour", it's great! Be prepared for a few minor surprises, but for the most part it's "More songs about chocolate by girls", to misquote the Undertones. . . Much better than Rock Animals, which made Knife sound like the band they wanna be, this one is overproduced a little, but the goofy, obtuse lyrics are still mostly unintelligible without a lyric sheet (included). I'm a little bummed at missing fave Howard Jones last week. His new disk, "People", is quite tasty also. Those who wanna test the Hojo sound recently might check out his live acoustic disc, which is just the bereted one, a grand piano and a percussionist. Very nice unplugged versions of lotsa hits. There are still a bunch of us who don't consider "Be Careful What You Say" to be part of _Rearmament_; it's one of the Bartlett/Rhodes demos from ectoSiG! In fact, it *really* doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. Though it's not nearly as bad as having "Look for the Child" after "To Be E. Mortal" on _Ecto_. That used to be one of the most amazing endings to an album, but now the mood is ruined by an the upbeat add-on. Mind you, I don't want to sound like I'm kvetching *too* much. I'm grateful for any tidbit that Happy's willing to throw our way, and I'm further grateful, 6.5 years down the line, that she was willing to put bonus tracks on the CDs we fought so hard for in the first place! Here I am, anxiously anticipating leaving work for 20 minutes tomorrow morning when Olssons opens to nab a couple copies of MWABT, which I feel perfectly assured I'll be able to find just about anywhere, yet at the same time, seemingly complaining about bonus tracks on cds of albums which, once upon a time, I never expected to exist as anything but hand-made tapes with glued-in photographs of painted cover art. That sentence was a bit much, wasn't it? I'm punchy with anticipation. ;-) Anyway. Some of you from way back when will recall that I used to speak of _Rearmament_ as my fave of the 1st4. I wrote interpretations and descriptions of many of the tracks (seems like the ecto ma once accused me of sending chills down her back after writing about...er... "Crystal Orbs," I think it was.) "Baby Don't Go," I still think, is one of Happy's most powerful pieces, both musically and lyrically. "Wake (and arise) / de(fi)ant (one) / time (time) for (for) you (you to) be who you are (are) are (are)." It just doesn't got too much better than that. Well, unless it's "Given In." Or "Possessed". Or...oh, never mind. The point is that I absolutely love _Rearmament_, and have since the day I got it in January of '91. > Ecto (the album) seems to rank high with a lot of folks, but it's the one > Happy disc that just hasn't hooked me yet. Do give _Ecto_ a nice, long chance. And if necessary, shut off your CD after "To Be E. Mortal." As I said, it's not that "Look For the Child" is bad (indeed, it's wonderful), it's just that for me, it ruins the mood of the album. "Don't Want to Hear It" was the first Happy song I transcribed (8/90!) and I remember being amazed once I started to figure out what the hell she was talking about. "Project 499" is another of my all time favorite Happy songs. Hell, looks like I'm going to have to take _Ecto_ and _Rearmament_ to work tomorrow; songs from both of 'em are absolutely screaming through my head now. It showed up in my mailbox today (a full day early) which is OK in my book (-: The CD wasn't a suprise to me, as I had both heard and seen it at WBRS (thanks Ofer!), but it's nice to finally have a copy of my own! On another note, I saw Susan Werner again over the weekend (she's been in the Boston area almost weekly lately, which makes me very happy!). Her new CD is scheduled to come out Sept 15th (on Bottom Line/BMG) and her new material is just totally amazing. She's going to be on the west cost starting on 9/18, so you all should go see her. That they bothered to get back to me leads me to believe that perhaps Happy made a good move. It wasn't just an auto- responder or a form letter but a thoughtful specific response. Not only did they respond, but they sent me a signed promo flat for MWABT, a copy of the "Roy" single and a promo Samson CD opener gizmo. I was impressed, and very grateful at the same time. Good things down the road ? Could Be. John BTW: the single (GC01431) had the CD version and a radio remix edt.
