Got to see Susan McKeown perform a short solo set today in Tompkins Square Park and managed to grab a copy of Happy's new disc for $3.99 in the used rack at Sounds on St Marks. (Sorry, they only had the one copy.) Also got a copy of Kate Jacob's "Hydrangea" and Veda Hille's "Spine" at Etherea on Ave A in Loisada. Having already spun Veda's disc through the transport twice today, I can now add my voice to the chorus of those who sing her praises in Ectoland. My expectations were high but the hoop-la proved to be entirely justified. Perhaps the next time she soars through Gotham I'll finally get to see her live. Had to check "H" to score Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. Having been unsuccessful in tracking the disc at a bunch of other shops I was starting to think the promo version would elude me. Kevin McManus from Samson responded to a missive I flung Samson's way over the wires, and they seem to be cranked about the barrage of pot stirring by Ecto-Folk trans-global. My elation at finding Ms Rhodes latest was followed by and undercurrent of revulsion when it crossed my mind that some swine allowed such a pearl to end up in the used bin. A Natalie McMaster Rounder re-issue compilation rounded out my day's indulgence in disc-mania. Walking out of Kim's with the wallet no worse for wear was a major accomplishment, scads of disc's I would have liked to have made my own remained on the shelves unbought. Susan was smashing as always. She was the opening performer at the Freedom Now Project's Day of Meditation and Yoga in Tompkins Square. Sitting barefoot on a saffron cushion on a small raised platform in the blazing sun she was an angelic vision dressed in an extraordinarily beautiful intricate white lace gown. She left her guitar and bohdran home and accompanied herself on a hurdy-gurdy kind of small hand pumped organ of wonderful tone. She was in fine voice, I left wishing that her set had not been so brief. I bumped into Carla Bley's daughter Karen Mantler at a performance given by Andrea Parkins at the New Music Gallery in the East Village last week and she invited me to come see her perform Thursday night at the Knitting Factory. When I saw her at the Factory I told her about Susan's having expressed some interest in putting some Beckett works to music. When I told her that I had given Susan a couple of her father's (Mike Mantler) discs where he had done just that, her interest in Susan's perspective was piqued. Susan told me that recent recording sessions produced some very favorable outcomes and my hopes for a new disc may soon be realized. The sound crew brought to Tompkins Square enough amplification to make your ears bleed in the back row of Town Hall but a generator hard pressed to drive a Walkman. Any signal greater than a whisper caused the amps to crash like a pyramid of empty beer cans. By the time they talked the parky into letting them tap into a street light Susan's set was done. Getting to the Factory twice in one week hit the spot, Wednesday I saw Elliot Sharp's Terraplane and Eszter Balint there. Both shows were terrific. Terraplane's a neurotic blues band and the whole night was worth while if only just to see the cover of Otis Rush's "All Your Love" that they closed with. Eszter Balint's show was a surprise, Elliott and she switched time slots, and I went in cold simply to pass the time. She had Chris Cochran ex-of Zina Parkins' "No-Safety" on guitar and they wailed. She played fiddle and sang. Why, I don't know, but her singing reminded me a bit of Lori Carson. I made the mistake of trying to give MWABT it's first listen this afternoon at work, just couldn't wait till I got home. Too many distractions. Just catching flashes of it's brilliance between diversions was frustrating. It's second go round closed the day nicely and I ache for the coming tour. Done rambling, amazing what too little sleep will do to you. Except for a brief tryout I've favored the loose mail option over the digest, I prefer scanning the subjects in the native mail format. A week ago, with much trepidation (as fellow lurkers should certainly understand), I posted a little blurb about a local CT band called Sweeter Than Wine whose new CD I find very enjoyable, and being a fan of HR and this forum, I wrote up a little ecto post about them and shipped it off. I really thought readers of this forum might enjoy them too. There has been absolutely zero response to that post so far as I can see. I wonder if I was out of line posting such a thing here. I see and enjoy many posts by fans of artists with apparently exceedingly small followings, and had come to think of ecto as a place where such musings were expected and largely appreciated. Perhaps many people choose the digest format, and my post hasn't hit that version yet, perhaps people skip scan like me and only read what they recognize, perhaps no one cares about my little friends and their local music thing. I'm not trying to be acrimonious here. I did post a reference to my silly little web page which includes some sound samples and has a hit counter... and I haven't seen evidence that its been hit by anyone other than myself. So I write this to (A) ask, was I wrong in bringing this sort of thing up (local bands of possible ecto interest) in this forum, and to (B) reissue my original post in case some sort of electromagnetic glitch caused y'all to miss it in the first place (and if so, then boy is my face red). Thanks Fog ================ copy of previous post follows ================= Hi, I delurk for a moment to bring to your attention a new CD by some friends of mine which may be enjoyed by those of the ecto persuasion... Sweeter Than Wine, a duo from Seymour CT (they call themselves a New Haven band) have just released their 2nd album called "Breathe". Now, I'm a little biased 'coz they play about once a month at my local watering hole, and I consider them friends and think they do I, and I also follow ecto, I love Happy, I like much of the music discussed here. And I am really enjoying this new STW album. And I want to share it with you fine folk. Rest asssured I am no producer or advertising weasel, I offer this opinion as a friend and fan of the band. Please see their website: http://www.northhaven.com/stw/ for information about where they are playing and how to order their CDs. Unfortunately there are no audio samples available from their site, (they're new at this techie stuff) but I have made some samples of some songs I especially like available on my web site (requires RealAudio 3.0 or better). http://home.earthlink.net/~foghornj/ If you like, please see STW's own site and order the disc. They are, they most definitely are appreciated! Even, and I hang my head in shame, when we stay silent and don't tell you. I myself took the web address out of your post and added it to my Suspended In Gaffa/Ecto Artists* web page listings, but I neglected to write you and thank you. So, honestly, thank you. Because you said something, people's ears will perk up when they hear the name Sweeter Than Wine, even if they wouldn't remember exactly who posted about them. Also, "local" artists are very important. They may stay local to the poster, but we here in Ecto know how "local" artists can also become household names. Hey, when Jeff Hanson and Neil Copperman were raving about this woman named Jewel Kilcher (sp?) who played the bars and clubs of San Diego, we all perked up and took notice. A few years later, the rest of the world did too. Thank you for posting about Sweeter Than Wine. Don't ever think you're being ignored, even when (sighs at my own laziness) it seems you are. For those who also lurk and wonder, the consensus is that everything and everyone mentioned here does get noted, mentally or physically, and not to take any delay or lack of immediate response to be ignorance. Exactly as I hoped and suspected. The affirmation of such is comforting, all the same. Another good point was made regarding timing, what with the imminent general availability of MWABT, certain birthdays of note, etc., this forum is justifiably preoccupied at the moment. BTW, I received a CDNOW shipping confirmation for my advance order of MWABT on Friday, earlier than expected. Nice surprise. One other ecto meta-question that was not answered yet is What is the turnaround on the digest? Does that get compiled and sent daily, weekly, after X posts, ??? Just curious. Sometimes topics here have an initial flurry of responses, go dormant, then pick up again, I wonder if that's digest-lag or "geez, I haven't checked my email in a while..." Thanks again, Fog ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1998 14:21:39 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: My Cincinnati Lilith Fair '98 Adventures (long, of course!) Once upon a time, I went to Lilith Fair '98 in Cincinnati with my husband (Bob), Michelle (Tatlock), and Rob (Diehl)....... After a little confusion regarding directions, Rob and Shelby arrived at my house around 11:00 am or so on Saturday morning of August 8th. After the opening FumbleHug session, they were immediately whisked away for a tour of my house, including my cd collection, and for my show-and-tell of Sarah, Paula Cole, and other photos and music-related treasures I've accumulated. I gave them each a cd or two and then we had some lunch. Kelly Fugate (Sierra4508) and I had spoken online and over the phone earlier that morning and discovered that she lives just 3 exits up the freeway from me! So she was going to stop by on her way to the concert and have me paint her fingernails gold like mine. Later she called and said she wouldn't be stopping because she was running a bit late.....but we agreed to meet at the Nettwerk booth. We arrived at Riverbend Music Center shortly before 3:00, which was when the gates were supposed to open. However, we were told that for some mysterious reason (yet to be determined), the whole event was running an hour behind schedule and gates wouldn't open until 4:00. :( So we found a place in the shade and waited patiently -- trying to hear the soundcheck (we *did* hear EmmyLou a bit) and being annoyed by the repeated intercom messages about what is and isn't allowed in the venue. Once inside the gates, we headed straight for the line for the free LF cds.....Tricky Shelby went through the line twice so that she could get two of them . Then the boys (Rob & Bob) waited patiently outside the restrooms as Shelby and I took a much-appreciated potty stop. After stopping at the Volkswagen booth to pick up some of the time schedule post cards.....and some daisies from around the pretty yellow VW....we hurried off to Nettwerk, where we immediately spotted Leanne. If only all of the musical artists were as friendly as Leanne is!! She welcomed us with open arms and came out of the booth to talk with us and to have photos taken with us. She and Dan were telling us about their favorite LF stops.....Dan's is Jones Beach.....but I forget if Leanne could narrow it down to one or not. Soon after Shelby, Rob, and I began talking with Leanne, a lovely young lady walked up to me and asked if I were Jill :D.......it was Kelly! She was with two of her friends, and joined in on the photo shoot. Leanne asked us to pass on a word of thanks to Lois Rodriguez for leaving her with a bunch of information about Houston . In the meantime, we were missing the opening act on the Village Stage -- a local Cincinnati duo called The Bromwell-Diehl Band . We weren't too sad, though, because we were having such a good time schmoozing with Leanne. ;-) We looked around at the booths to find the Love Tent, because I wanted to see if I could exchange a dress I had purchased at their booth at the Columbia show. However, the Love Tent wasn't at the Cincy venue......but we were fortunate enough to find some wonderful substitutes! (More on that later.) Shelby and Rob and I went into the Tower booth, where Shelby and I both came out with Mary Lou Lord's original (?) self-titled CD from Kill Rock Stars. I also picked up cds from four artists with whom I'm totally unfamiliar -- Elizabeth Carlisle, Deni Bonet, Julie Kryk, and Pamela Fleming (Natalie Merchant's trumpet player). Tower also gave away sampler cassettes from Michelle Lewis and Morcheeba. Then we decided to see what Idina Menzel is all about...at the Village Stage. She had a lead role in the Broadway production "Rent," and when I had first heard her singing on her old website, I wasn't all that excited. But then I found out about her new website, checked it out, and was anxious to see her at LF. She's very good! You could just tell that she was really thrilled to be a part of this major usical event. After Idina, we wandered over to Second Stage to see folksinger Catie Curtis. As we were watching her, we broke out the Subway sandwiches and Naya we'd brought. I've always liked Catie, but she was even better in person! Lots of energy! Star-spotter, Shelby, noticed a flash of purple-blue hair off to the side, and sure enough, Ash was behind the stage. We were in front left row of people sitting in the grass, and I got up and walked around to the back left side of the tent and saw him talking with what turned out to be Chantal's drummer. I guess when Catie was finished we just putzed around for awhile before Chantal Kreviazuk took the stage. We got right down in the front center of the grass for her set. I was standing up, but some people behind me were putting up a fuss, so I tried to be polite and sit at least some of the time......but anyway, Chantal is sooooo cool and personable and listens to the audience -- really seems to care about them. Now somewhere along the line -- and I can't remember if it was during Catie's or Chantal's set -- Shelby spotted Sarah off to the right side, too! So I decided right then and there that this might be my only opportunity to meet her and to go for it! I went around to the right side of the stage. There was a bike rack gate there but it was easy to go around it. Two tables of crew members were sitting there snacking, and Idina Menzel and her assistant were sitting there, too. So to make it look like I belonged there, I just casually walked up and started talking to Idina. Heheheh.... She seemed very appreciative that someone was complimenting her and taking notice of her music. At this point, Sarah was only a few feet away from me, watching the stage. She was wearing sunglasses and a black slip-dress with something royal blue underneath.....and her big ol' platform sandals. I just walked up to her right side and said......oh, geeze....I can't even remember exactly what I said.....I think I said, "Hi, I'm Jill :D from the Fumbler list!" And she smiled and said hi......but I could tell that she was a little surprised that someone had managed to get that close to her. Then I asked if I could have my picture taken with her. She seemed to be saying a not-so-enthusiastic OK while at the same time saying that she was watching the show -- just like Ash had done in Camden when I walked up and introduced myself to him. And just as she was answering, I noticed that Shelby and my good buddy Andrea (from *in-the-wings*) were both taking my picture with Sarah from only a few yards away! Woohoo! Although I was lucky enough to have those two wonderful people take my photo with Sarah, it was at about this time that Sarah's bodyguard, Joe, asked me if I was with the press. And honest-but-stupid Jill :D said, no. So Joe told me that I'd have to go back on the other side of the gate. Ah, well.......at least the mission was accomplished.......But I still feel kind of guilty about maybe scaring Sarah. I wonder how often things like that happen to her. During Chantal's set, when I *was* standing.....she was talking back and forth to the audience and I told her that I remembered how when she had appeared at Bogart's in Cincy earlier this year she had offered to share her sweater with a chilled audience member. The girl who had yelled out to her at Bogart's to ask for the sweater was in the front row now, too, and shouted out, "That was me!" Chantal smiled and said something about how maybe she had better get it back. And the girl said, "I never got it from you!" Anyway, Chantal finished her set with "Leavin' On a Jet Plane," and who should take the stage to join her but Idina Menzel, Natalie Merchant (who crouched down during part of the song), and Sarah!!! The whole audience was singing along and having a great time! When Chantal was finished, we spotted her over at the Tower booth....just before she was going to sit down to sign autographs. We had come from behind the booth instead and I just walked up to her and started talking to her. I told her how much I really appreciate her great stage presence and friendliness. And she thought that was funny but nice. Then we put one of our arms around each other (I think we might have even been cheek-to-cheek!) and had our photo taken together. She also signed my Lilith Fair postcard (since I didn't have my CD with me). I think I'm going to have to get on her mailing list.... Next we were off to see Bic Runga on the Village Stage. She's from New Zealand and was a little bit difficult to understand when she talks, but her voice was so pretty and tiny. At first I kept thinking she reminded me of Poe, but I've figured out that it's Stina Nordenstam that Bic sounds like. Sarah and Ash were off to the rear right side of the stage again -- watching Bic. Ashe seemed to be recording her....and we saw him reach up and take Sarah's hand for awhile. (So squelch those rumors of their reported divorce, will ya?!) Finally, it was time to go in to see the Main Stage acts. Unforuntately, this was where we had to part ways with Rob, who had a single ticket in Section 300 to the right (and slightly in back) of us. Shelby, Bob, and I were in the first row of Section 200....slightly off to the left center. Des'ree was much better than I had expected......lots of smiles and energy! Luscious Jackson was up next, and Shelby and I decided to make another potty run so that we could stay in our seats for the rest of the evening. After visiting the ladies room, which by this time was empty of toilet paper, we went to get Shelby a frozen lemonade and do some shopping. We watched a little bit of Victoria Williams, who seemed to be having a great time on the Second Stage and then we stopped at a jewelry booth. Shelby purchased a barette and a pin -- both of which had dolphins on them!! I bought some tiny silver bicycle earrings and a pin with a book on it.....and some amber earrings that the designer picked out for me. We talked with her awhile and exchanged website addresses. Then we made one last stop......to the *sperm bowl* lady! Her name is Jan....and she told us that she buys these wooden bowls and other materials from thrift and secondhand shops....then handpaints her designs on them. She had a British-sounding accent, so I asked her where she was from. Jan told us that she was from Vancouver and had grown up with Sarah.....and that Sarah had specifically asked her to be a part of the LF tour. Quite cool! Anyway, I bought this lovely $40 *sperm bowl*, which Jan carefully wrapped in blank newsprint and tied with a raffia bow. The wooden bowl is lightweight, about 8" across, painted a bright royal blue with lot of big black sperm swimming about in it. Kind of a conversation piece, I suppose. ;-) Then Shelby and I went back into the pavilion and took our seats. Emmy Lou Harris was up next and did a really great foot-stomping set (with some tender moments as well). Her drummer is soooooo cool! Really works hard, but smiles nearly all the time as he bangs away on his drums! And her voice is so beautiful and effortless.... Next up Natalie Merchant did her striptease.......ok, well, not exactly. She started out at the piano with her hair up and wearing a long green skirt and a striped shirt. As she played the piano, she eventually took off the long- sleeved shirt to reveal a short-sleeved royal blue leotard-looking top......then during her first standing-up song (I never remember setlists -- maybe it was Jealousy), she took off her long green wraparound skirt and was left with a shorter green skirt. That girl just hops all over the stage and dances around like there ain't no stoppin' her! ;-) The big swing eventually came down and she commented on how she could swing right out over the audience if she wanted to. During her final number, "I Want to Spank You, Spank You" (hee-hee!), Des'ree came out on stage and joined her. They walked out with their arms around each other's waists after their very lively performance. And of course......the final act was my personal friend, Sarah. "Last Dance" started the set, as usual, and then she went into "Sweet Surrender." Our glowsticks were waved at the appropriate times in "Witness." (Oh, and at one point Sarah read a sign held up by some people near the front.....I never heard what it said, but I'm quite sure they weren't Fumblers.) Not in order, but she also performed "Possession," "Building a Mystery" (and the crowd goes WILD!), "Black and White," "Angel," and "Ice Cream." The encore was "Adia" and then all of the LF artists for the day came onstage to join in on "What's Goin' On?" Shelby, Bob & Rob, and I met up with Kelly and her friends right after the show. Kelly had been discovered (thanks to her glowstick) by Malanai (from Cincinnati). We had seen some other groups of glowsticks around, but never saw the other people close enough to see who they were.......show yourselves! The concert was over at midnight.....but it took over an hour to get out of the parking lot! (There's *got* to be a better system!) We finally made it home by around 1:40 am, had a snack, and got some much-needed rest. After waking up around 9:30 am, Shelby and Rob took off for Louisville at around 11:00 and our adventure came to a close....... Ok.....that's my story. If you have questions, comments, etc., please respond only to the appropriate mailing lists. Thanks! It did look like she was having a nice time - so I'll very hopeful at least :) What did even it, however, was Velvet Belly earlier that evening. They did start out with Velvet Underground's Ocean to honour the wonderful weather and then continued with Drowning Sun. The amazing thing happenend during that song - just as Anne Marie did get to the first "Drowning Sun" it started to rain. The sun did shine me in the back, I got totally wet and a windblasts did wave Anne Marie's long hair. That moment was just beyond anything I've ever experienced. It is just so sad that they don't get to play much outside Norway. They get questions from people in Sweden and Denmark, but the norwegian branch of BMG can't do much when they mostly are ignored by the mother company. Good news though - VB are going back in the studio this Fall to start working on their 6th album. Hmmm, they didn't play any new songs at the Quart Festival, but if I know Anne Marie Almedal's talent correctly - the new songs won't be less good than those on Lucia. *hugs* - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1998 19:47:32 -0400 From: woj sven-woj Subject: Re: Ecto-quette question also sprach Foghorn J Fornorn (foghornj@earthlink.net): >One other ecto meta-question that was not answered yet is What is the >turnaround on the digest? Just curious. assuming there are any posts in the prior 24 hours, the digest goes out daily in the wee hours (well, the wee hours of the east coast of north america anyways). forget the exact time, but it's around 1:50 am, give or take. if there is enough traffic, an earlier digest will be sent out when the size of the messages to be digested exceeds 40k. woj n.p. dana and karen kletter -- dear enemy, ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Aug 1998 20:10:28 -0700 From: just plain damon Subject: huzzah new guide! (and misc) well, not too much was said about the beta of the new ectophiles' guide, which i suppose is at least not a *bad* sign. ;) but i just thought i'd write and let people know that the beta is no longer beta, and has now been launched at its usual address, http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/. i know neile has a bunch of updates pending, so i imagine there'll be some new content there soon too ;) i'm really happy with it - it's my best darned work to date, and it wasn't even "work work"! goes to show that money ain't the only motivator :) at least it'll look good on resumes when i start looking for "real" work in a bit. ;) we're hoping to get into residence at ubc when we get back out to vancouver at the end of this month, and assuming we do i'm going to be running my old 486 linux box as a server on resnet there, i.e. i'll have a spiffy t1 connexion for next to nothing. if/when that happens, i would like to run an ectoguide mirror site, just for fun... and to take some of the load off jeff's isdn line. whee! speaking of which, thanks again to jeff for smoe.org and for his cooperation! in other news, i'm looking longingly at the sale prices on cdnow (including those for they might be giants' "then - the early years" compilation and their upcoming live/unreleased stuff album "severe tire damage"... and of course mwabt (wascawwy thing that it is). unfortunately since we're moving back to vancouver at the end of the month it doesn't make too much sense for me to place an order now... ah well. at least i'm moving back to the place with some of the lowest cd prices in the world :) hey, maybe for once i'll even be able to find a happy album locally! - -damon (ps, valenfilipiqtypes - sorry for not writing in so long...) I loaned it to my step-mother back in...er, april? may? when did it come out? and other than a brief recapture while I borrowed it back to tape a track for a compilation tape, I hadn't heard it 'til I snuck into my folks' apartment last week and stole it back. How totally cool. (now I gotta steal back my Noa CDs...and anything else I might have loaned 'em) jeff n.p. Sounds like you got lots of good responses, but since I didn't see them, I may as well add my own feedback in the offchance they didn't cover the same bases. I'm notoriously slow to jump onto things like following up on a new, local band. I may save the URL and check on it later, or merely gloss over it. However, if they are someone you like, you should keep mentioning them. Drop some comments after you see a show, and give some feedback on the show too. Be sure to mention when they are playing anywhere, especially if they are going out of town. (I've gotten a lot of ectophiles to see Lisa Cerbone when she travels places, and she is always happy when people come up and say they came because of ecto. There are a number of artists out there who are familiar with ecto and really pleased that they get supported here.) Some of us are more interested in checking a new performer out live than buying the disc. Also, repeated mentions cause the band's name to synch into people's minds a bit. (Even just listing them as something you are playing helps that.) So maybe when someone see's the disc live, they'll remember to give it a spin. Tape it for a few people in the hopes that they'll mention it sometime too. It's certainly been the case that positive comments from a number of different people have in the past caused many others to buy the disc. (Land of the Blind is a good example of that.) As for getting responses to a post - well, sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. You never can tell if what you have to say will strike anybody or not. However, there are enough people out there that you can almost guarantee that some of them will have paid attention to you, even if no one responds. (It is nice to get feedback though.) Well, that's my 17 cents worth, Neal np: Sohre - Who Will Know (I'd add to my comments of the other day song structure that might appeal to a Yes fan, but won't put off those of us who find Yes pretty unbearable.) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #262 **************************
