Basically, the task is simple, requiring only some time and organizational and communication and e-mail skills: 1) Read & enjoy ecto 2) Notice when people state opinions about artists and pieces of music 3) Keep those messages 4) For people not on the swipe-at-will list, request permission to use the material for the Guide and want for permission to return 5) About once a month or whenever seems right forward all the comments for which permissions have been received to me to add to the Guide files. Sound easy and fun and like something you'd like to do? Please let me know! Hi Norm, and welcome to Ecto! Great to know that you have enjoyed "Rhodesongs" so much! If you prefer the acoustic side of Happy, I would suggest that you try to check out "The Keep" or "Rearmament" next. "Warpaint", like its successor "Equipoise", has some of Happy's more fully instrumented music. I think you would likely appreciate them, given your list of other favoured artists, but they're not the best place to look for the more acoustic Happy sound. Be sure to let us know what you get, and how you like it! Today I had the thrilling experience of flipping through the latest Billboard (Aug 8), expecting to be bored... being bored... and then on page fifteen in full colour is Happy and her little silver ball. Release date was mentioned (though I don't remember it being as soon as the 8th, but that's my memory. oh. 8/11 American means 11/8 NZ. ok). It was eerie because never before in New Zealand have I seen any of her paraphenalia or albums in any context other than as possessions of mine, Philip's or Ursula's. Being on paper, full colour, large portion of the page, well. It seemed so public and real. That made my day. Alex's anticipation for the Newport folk festival just reminded me - I'm currently reading "The Mansion on the Hill," which is a marvelous book about the divide between art and commerce in rock music. I'm not sure if it's been discussed here before, but I think it would appeal to a lot of ectophiles. It begins with the emergence of the folk movement and the Boston/Cambridge area is prominent. I love the "Yes East" lineup. The songs they made are magnificent. Some of my favorite Yes songs came from this group. The addition of Trevor Rabin to the group was so magnificent though. Two of my favorite Yes albums are "90125" and "Big Generator". So with Rabin, you have complex and interesting arrangements, Anderson vocals, and Rabin's guitar work. (really great!) If I had to choose, I'd pick West. That was what I missed from the ABWH album. That is what I preferred. Are Trover and the rest continuing to make music as some version of Yes? The only line up I've seen was the ABWH etc. one on talk shows and on tour and such. She draws immediate comparisons to Kate Bush: Her voice leaps to the same precarious highs, but she also touches deeper, seductive lows. At times her voice is knowing, poignant and serene, ascending into choirs, then whispering huskily into your ear that "Everything I do is madness." Rhodes has always delved into dark, interior states of mind, often arising out of a troubled childhood. Orchestrating a textured electronica landscape, she makes inquiries into God, existence and on "100 Years," computer games. Swampy, distorted percussion, searing e-bow guitars and looping melodies populate the interior rooms of a wired world, in which Happy Rhodes is a cyber-troubadour, keeping watch on our souls. --JOHN DILBERTO (4 stars, out of 5?) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Aug 1998 01:52:12 EDT From: PunkaPixie@aol.com Subject: Re: tori amos concert............... hey all i'm looking for people to give reviews of any shows you've seen of tori on this leg of her tour.. that goes for any other artist too.. because i'm trying to work on issue #3 of my zine, pixie's h0megr0wn if you have any, please send them my way :) ttyl - -linda ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #258 **************************
