I've just subscribed to the list, and I have a question for all of you about Happy Rhodes. 'RhodeSongs' is my first aural experience of Happy, and I'm ecstatic to have found it! While I enjoy both the acoustic and non-acoustic songs on this album, I'm favouring the acoustic ones. Having said that, which album would all of you suggest I purchase next? Perhaps 'Warpaint'? My musical favourites (along the Ecto vein) include Kate Bush, Indigo Girls, Tori Amos (first 2 albums), Melissa Etheridge, Joni Mitchell, Sarah Maclaughlin. virtually, =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | Norm Szcyrek - Computer Systems Analyst | Landscape Analysis and Application, Natural Resources Canada | Canadian Forest Service, Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada | email: noszcyre@fres.glfc.forestry.ca =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Aug 1998 10:34:05 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: New Releases for Tuesday, August 4th ******************* * ICE CD Releases * ******************* *Rock and Pop new releases* - -------------------------- - - ALL-4-ONE - On and On (new title) (Atlantic) - - ROBIN ADNAN ANDERS (Sufi master-drummer) - Omaiyo (trance) (Candescence/Rykodisc) - - BIRCH STREET MAFIA - Armageddon (Private I/Mercury) - - RANDALL BRAMLETT - See Through Me (Capricorn/Mercury) - - DEAD OR ALIVE - Nukleopatra (Cleopatra) - - DROWN - Product of a Two Faced World (Slipdisc/Mercury) - - FLIGHT 16 - Flight 16 (550 Music) - - MICKEY HART/PLANET DRUM - Supralingua (Rykodisc) - - GARY JULES - Greetings from the Side (A&M) - - BRIAN MAY - Another World (ICE #137 and 136) (Hollywood) - - THE MURMURS - Blender (Pristine Smut re-recorded w/extra tracks) (MCA) - - PAULA PERRY - Tales From Fort Knox (Motown) - - POINT OF GRACE - Steady On (Word/Epic) - - RASPUTINA - How We Quit the Forest (ECD) (Columbia) - - REELTIME - Live it Up (Green Linnet) - - BEAU SIA - Attack! Hi all, I'm writing everyone today to encourage as many EDAs & Ectophiles as possible to join in on the Living Room Tour that is planned to begin later this month. For those unfamiliar with the LRT phenomenon, following this informational post is an older post explaining the history behind these special EDA house concerts. This year, the two featured performers are Joy Eden Harrison & Lisa Sanders. Both of these talented women will be playing intimate solo performances unlike their regular club gigs with bands. They'll be covering new territory in North America on this LRT, & its a great opportunity for many to enjoy them live for the first time. From Chicago, Joy Eden Harrison will be debuting songs from her soon to be released 2nd album as well as songs from her bluesy/swingin debut album "Angel Town". San Diego songwriter Lisa Sanders will also be debuting new material as well as songs from her powerful debut CD "Isn't Life Fine". Both of these artists deserve your attention & its also a great opportunity to meet some of these folks who's posts fill your emailboxes at the same time. If you're wondering what makes this "EDA-thing" tick, these get-togethers are what its all about. What follows are the confirmed dates & cities. If you are anywhere near these cities, contact TJTalken@aol.com. She will forward you the hosts info for that gig. They'll help you with directions, transportation help, etc. Since most of these gigs take place in EDA homes, attendance is limited. Don't wait til the last minute! Here's where you can join in on the 1st leg of this tour. (West Coast info is not available yet.) MrBB (LRT history post follows) Date: Wednesday, May 27, 1998 9:39:17 AM Subj: MrBB-LRT History Class 101 Hi all, For those interested in the LRT phenomenon, here's how it all began. Back in April of 97, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel were on a US tour together & doing a gig in Cambridge, MA. Their next gig, two nights later, was scheduled for Albany, NY (a very long drive). They discovered that the Albany venue mistakenly advertised their gig on the wrong date, so rather than drive all that way for a certain wash-out gig, they contacted members of the Jewel list & suggested doing an impromptu gig in the Boston area, if The EDAs could provide a venue & there was enough interest. Amazingly, within 24 hours The Snyder family in Boston volunteered their home & approximately 25 people from around New England (including my wife & I) descended on the Snyders home with food, drink & piles of audio & video equipment. At first, everyone was a little anxious not knowing what to really expect, especially the musicians. As we eased into the performance, everybody relaxed & began totally getting into the spontenaity of the moment. This intimate approach dramatically changed the dynamics between performer & audience. The musicians were totally getting off on the fact that everyone really was there to listen & the audience experienced a "one on one" closeness not experienced in a "traditional setting" type performance. Total communication between us all inspired Cindy Lee & Elizabeth to play for almost 4 solid hours & everyone (including them) left a bit stunned & amazed at how great it was! It was certainly the most memorable night of their tour. Shortly after this, the musicians, myself & several other friends here on this list, began discussing the viability of doing a revolutionary approach to touring & somehow facilitate more of what happenned in Boston. The idea was to cut out "all the suits", ie, management, promoters, agents, etc., & book a summer tour directly into fans homes. I won't get into all the details but this was done & it was a huge success! Shows were booked in various EDA homes around Northeastern USA, promoted by fans on the Internet & attended by hundreds of people over the course of the tour. Every date was incredibly special in its own way. Some shows were actually in living rooms & several were outdoors in yards. Each attendee paid $10 toward the musicians. After that first LRT, word began circulating around San Diego & Boston's musician-communities & interest from many others began. Since that time, many other great musicians have taken the plunge & thoroughly enjoyed it! Several West Coast LRTs have taken place since then as well as sporadic Midwest LRTs & a few more in the Boston area. This "LRT Concept" has taken focus primarily with San Diego & Boston area musicians, but is continually expanding. Musicians who've participated in LRT gigs include members of The Rugburns, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Randi Driscoll, Cindy Wasserman, Peggy Watson, Jody Blackwell, Jenny Bruce, Renatta Bratt, Kevin So, Eric Gerber & of course Elizabeth Hummel & Cindy Lee Berryhill (& now even CLB's entire Garage Orchestra). Almost everything so far has been recorded & there exists an extensive archive of the LRTs so far. Some video clips will eventually be on various websites & some of the recordings have been released (with authorization) on the "Future Folklore" tape series, which itself was inspired by that 1st "LRT gig" in Boston. Other authorized releases will be forthcoming. This "LRT scene" continues to generate incredible interest. Many musicians have expressed interest for future LRT's, including fairly high profile artists like Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin & Tara MacLean. Every musician who's done it, definately wants to do it again. For photos from last summers LRTs, go to: http://thespis.com/crashboy/LRT/lrt.htm Thus concludes LRT History-101. :-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Aug 1998 13:22:27 -0700 From: "Larry S. She needs to sell these tickets quickly...... My friend paid $98 for the two tickets (including service charges), which are for Section 38, Row A, seats 1-2.. You can check out the seating chart through the TicketMaster website (www.ticketmaster.com). She said that although she'd like to recover her cost of the tickets, she will sell them for less than she paid for them if it's not *too* unreasonable. She will also pay for FedEx C. O. D. If you can help her out and take these tickets off her hands, please e-mail her ASAP at pumpkin@universe.digex.net and include a telephone number where she can call you to make delivery arrangements (she has the tickets in her possession in Maryland). Having said that, which album would all of you suggest I purchase next? >> I would suggest "The Keep" which is another compilations of primarily acoustic arrangements of many of her songs. "Warpaint" is a good choice, and is probably one of the more globally accessible releases, but it is more of a full-instrumentation arrangement release. Her first four releases "Rhodes I", "Rhodes II", "Rearmament", and "Ecto" have many fine acoustic songs, some of which appear on "RhodeSongs". These are from early in her career, though, and in some cases songs are more "demo" sounding. Still good stuff, though. Overall, I'd have to stick with "The Keep" if you like acoustic. This release *really* showcases her range--just listen to "Life On Mars"! I'm anxious to hear what others are suggesting for you.
