That reminds me. I am no longer on the Kate list, but I wonder if anyone knows how much the "Cathy" book is worth these days. I remember it cost about $US42 when it came out, but I don't know if it is still in print or if there are collectors looking for it. Just checking my mail from a drab hotel room in the drab town of Drumheller, Alberta. On a road trip to do some photography in the Canadian Rockies and the badlands of southern Alberta. Quite an adventure so far. Though ironically the high point to date was attending a native sun dance ceremony (annual religious ceremony), where they don't allow cameras. That one was one of those random chance things... this guy in a small town (Fort McLeod) mistook me initially for an Indian, but invited me anyway. So I ended up driving for miles across the prairie to the Blood Nation's reserve, until I found the teepee ring. (some 80 teepees) Remarkable experience. The whole thing has been sort of a time trip for me in more ways than one. I don't have a CD player in the car so I grabbed a bunch of cassettes that were mouldering on a shelf. But of course my tape collection universe came to an abrupt end when I first got a CD player... I've been driving through the mountains listening to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (ie: pre-OMD), early Peter Gabriel, Eurythmics, Cowboy Junkies, Bruce Cockburn... hell. 80s flashback. Stuff I haven't listened to in years - unless I also have the CD. Does this happen to anyone else? Anyway, off to bed - tomorrow is the dinosaur museum, badlands and the world-famous... gopher museum! - Neil K. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 01:00:27 -0700 From: "Drew Harrington" Subject: Re: I'll "Knife" with you! With this talk of Shonen Knife, I thought I'd chime in. I don' know them except for a Tribute Album "Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them". Its got bands like Sonic Youth, Lunachicks, and Mr. T Experience (the latter being my motivation to buy it) covering Shonen Knife songs. Just so you know, Shonen Knife are touring. I got this list off pollstar, but I know it's not complete, for example it doesn't include the San Francisco 8/14 Maritime Hall date I'm planning on attending. Most of these dates (all except the first, as far as I can tell) are actually opening for the "Suffragette Sessions" Tour, which is being organised by the Indigo Girls and includes people like Jane Siberry... :) sherlyn =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= a+e=ig Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au [Sydney, Australia] "Life can be so dramatic - but it was real at the time..." - The Waifs ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 09:09:17 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Re: Wendy Maharry In a message dated 8/3/98 12:05:37 AM Eastern Daylight Time, neile@sff.net writes: << Do you have any current information about Wendy Maharry? I'm listening to it for the second time and am oh- so-pleased! The album is called "when - a bootleg" and is labeled as "a collection of original songs + music for the movie "When" + demos from the lo-fi lounge." There are ten tracks. First of all, "When" hasn't been released......this is all I could find at the Internet Movie DataBase: <> There are some crew members listed, too, but no cast members yet. Ok, back to the music..... Track 1: "When" Track 2: "Berlin 1945" Track 3: "Ireland" Track 4: "Color + Noise"* (Middle Section) Track 5: "The Way Young Lovers Do"** Track 6: "Color + Noise"* (Improv) Track 7: "Strawberries" Track 8: "Color + Noise"* Track 9: "When" (Long Mix) Track 10: "Almost Gone" *Written by Joy Askew + Kevin Bents ** Written by Van Morrison "Berlin 1945" and "Strawberries" are both beautiful slow songs -- perfect *soundtrack-type* music. "When" goes from a kind of haunting slow tune to a louder, more energetic musical adventure. And at the end of that song, you hear a repeating noise that sounds rather like a *pop* like we used to hear on the old vinyl records. Rhythmic handclaps performed by Alex Alexander start "The Way Young Lovers Do." The other songs are great, too......In addition to the wonderful slow stuff, Joy can get rather "wild" sometimes. I can't even begin to describe this stuff, so I won't. You'll just have to order it yourself. (www.artist-shop.com -- I got mine in just four days!) I *do* like it better than either of Joy's other two albums ("Tender City" and "Gorgeous Creature EP"). Highly, highly, highly recommended!!!! The packaging is rather interesting: A simple white cardboard sleeve with black & white Xeroxed paper squares glued on the back and front as covers. Really *looks* like a bootleg! I'm wondering if there will be a different version of the package when the movie is released. How I found this, I'm not sure, but a few months ago, while looking around on the Internet Movie Database, I came across a planned Chris O'Donnell movie to be titled , and from what I saw on that page, it looked like a remake of , a 1925 movie starring Buster Keaton (I'm a fan of his). Anyhow, I went back to IMDB recently to find out more about this movie, and that page hasn't been updated since January; a quick search for O'Donnell-related sites came up with a few pix-laden pages... does anyone know of a site/place that might have any further info on this movie? ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #256 **************************
