I didn't really know what to expect - Wow - Great show. Wonderful energy. Wonderful effortless voice. Nice tight band. The only critisism I can come up with, and it's not a strong one, is that with the exception of an accoustic "Truth and Bone" all the arrangements were pretty much identical to the albums versions. If you haven't already caught (or missed) her tour, think about checking her out. Pretty good show. Worth catching. 'allo, i am late with this message, but ah well. just catching up and found a string about shoegazing, and i used to be into the whole scene back in 91 or so. I just wanted to clarify that the phrase "dreampop" which actually came about at the same time as the phrase "shoegazing' is slightly different. the origin i think was in an article (probably from MELODY MAKER OR NME) in discussing the band AR KANE, and their sound. the origin of the phrase "shoegazing" came about in another article (again most likely in MM or NME) when discussing a grow number of bands who played songs that were more atmospheric than pop structured, and who would stare at their shoes at shows, instead of rocking out and jumping about. bands originally in that scene were mostly british and most have already been stated (COCTEAU TWINS and MY BLOODY VALENTINE being the big two). some that weren't stated were MOOSE, PARIS ANGELS, MOONSHAKE, BLUR (which often got lumped in with the whole baggy MADCHESTER scene but still people tended to call them shoegazers), PALE SAINTS, KITCHENS OF DISTINCTION most of the bands on 4AD at the time, etc. as a bit of trivia, AR KANE never really achieved any commercial success in the US, despite critical success. the only huge hit that they did have, was the a side project that the DJs did under the name M.A.R.R.S. the song "PUMP OF THE VOLUME" was a hit both on the dance floor and in the charts if i can remember correctly. hmmm. CURVE by the way, was a big commercial success, but the british press really railed on them because they seemed to be riding the wave of success of both the whole baggy MADCHESTER scene and the SHOEGAZING scene as well. they were able to blend both aspects perfectly into a digestable pop sound, and GARBAGE is just an american version of CURVE. BUTCH VIG isn't stupid. he didn't necessarily imitate CURVE, but just completely stole riffs from MY BLOODY VALENTINE instead (something CURVE did too, but not as well). just listen to the opening of LOVELESS and the opening of GARBAGE's first album. it's so blatant that i am amazed it hasn't been written about more. in a complete non-sequitor i really miss my LOVELESS tshirt i used to own. it was so beautiful. got ripped though, climbing a fence. it was my favorite shirt too. impossible to get now. :( by the way before GARBAGE came about as an american version of CURVE, there use to be a band called LULUBOX that held that title, 'least for a brief 15 minutes. dunno whatever happened to them, but they certainly fit the CURVE mold. i know they released one album, and then another more acoustic-y sounding album/ep thingie. worth checking out for those who are interested in that sound. of course it all sounds a bit dated if you listen to it now, but ah well.... someone mentioned SIOUXSIE being in their pantheon, and i would second that. one of the few artists who have transcended genres. her side project with BUDGIE called THE CREATURES has apparently become her main project now that the banshees have broken up. they came to SF, but i wasn't around, though there were fab reviews all the way around. she was playing with JOHN CALE. and finally someone post a review for the new LISA GERMANO CD! i saw it in the stores, but am too broke to buy it. i was dissappointed with LOVE HOTEL, and would like to know how SLIDE compares to her previous works.... that is all. Hi, I've been wondering, and maybe I just overlooked the information (I'm a bit behind on Ecto...), but will "Many worlds..." be released in Europe? Or distributed? So far, at least here in the Netherlands, Happy's AG albums could be imported by the acclaimed Bertus Distributie (also known as 'Bertje' or 'little Bert', http://www.bertus.com ), specialized in import cd's, and any cd-store that would have import-cd's could order Happy's cd's through them. I know that Samson will have an European office in the Netherlands (according to the Terra Incognita homepage), but what about the distribution of her album? I would like to try to get my local store to order Happy's cd for me, but if it's not available for import that would mean a very very long wait... PostScript programming is fun! And PS interpreters have a lot less compatibility problems than WWW browsers. I hope you don't mean we should let HTML generation to be done by graphical page creation programs. O well... I will agree with dgk (may I call you dgk?) that Tin Huey were hardly doing anything original or groundbreaking. In fact, after I found a copy of the record, I'd made an Ubu-fan friend of mine listen to it because they sounded like Pere Ubu reinvented as a bar band. Most of the basis for my claim that Butler had some hand in popularizing math rock actually has to do with his work in the Waitresses. True, their arrangements are hardly as clever or as complex as the Hueys, but they're pretty whacked-out for a mainstream band. You've gotta wonder what people who bought the first Waitresses album for the hit "I Know What Boys Like" thought of the opening strains of "Go On", which had a tight, novel arrangement of sounding like a well-oiled machine, or the arrangement of "Pussy Strut"...true, not as challenging as anything on _Objects Dislodged_, but certainly very fascinating in their own right. As for Scott Miller being a math-rock guy -- true, nine times out of ten he's a pop writer whose work takes some crafty, angular turns. However, there are some moments on _Interbabe Concern_ or Game Theory's _Lolita Nation_ that suggest the influence of math-rockers like Butler. I could also be talking out of places that are anatomically impossible for me to be talking out of, too, but that's another story. After spending an incredible month in Vancouver BC, I've returned to the Midwest. From the people I met, to the shows I saw, to the work I did while I was there, it all contributed to an amazing month and I feel somewhat sad back home. However I'm excited to announce that my time in Vancouver and the help of Adam produced my first CD (EP) "What has happened"! The CD includes some of the first songs I've written (or wrote, some are a year old now) and newer songs, all produced, recorded, and mixed by Adam and I. - -What has happened release: hopefully before Sept. 1, 1998 all songs written by Jessica Weiser, all music by Adam and Jessica Songs include "Waiting," "left," "What Can I say?", "All I could do," and "Cage of wire" - -All guitars, bass, drums, etc. done by Adam and Jessica - -Lyrics, artwork, photography included and done by Adam and Jessica Because of all of the costs and time involved in making the CD, they'll be $10, plus $2 if you need it shipped. Though this may seem high, remember that I'm still independent and though I'd like to try to cover the postage, I would go broke trying to do so. Email me if you have issues with this. If you know someone who'd be interested in a promo copy (I have a *very* limited number), let me know. I already have people listening to it from Nettwerk, Mercury, and hopefully Jann Arden's new label Big Hip Records. If you know someone not at one of thise, particularly an indie label or managers, that would be most helpful! :) If you're interested in helping me do promo stuff for this album via the net or however please email me, I'd really appreciate it! :) Also! I'll be sending out a 7-10 pg. flyer w/ pics about my summer and the recording of the album. If you order a CD, you'll get one with this. If you just want a mailout or future mailouts w/ gig or new album into, please send your snail mail add to: Songbird22@aol.com w/ "Mailout Summer 98" in the subj. or body. To order the CD (pre-order right now), please send a message to Songbird22@aol.com w/ "order" in the subj. or body and let me know how many you'd like. I'll send you a conf. email for payment and when you'll get it (they will be mailed out immediately--no, really)--they should be done being pressed and shipped by Sept at the latest. I'd like to start taking pre-orders now so I can start making the envelopes out and know how many mailouts to print. We are moving Aug. 1, so I'll send you my new address when you mail me. Questions? Email me about anything here or at 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu (which isn't working at the moment...) I am incredibly proud of the work we did on this CD, particularly b/c of the amount of time and limited resources we had. I appreciate *so* much your past and continued support. There are collective list thanks in the liners b/c it would take way too much room to thank each of you personally for your kindness and support...rest-assured, I appreciate your individual acts of support more than I can say. Sorry this is so long! I'll send another email out w/ the same info when they are back form the press, just in case you want to order then. It seems like an ecto-friendly place, with several channels playing music by artists discussed here. I don't think the anti-Samson crowd will appreciate it. I am no web page programmer, but the site seems pretty complex! I myself think they have a problem jamming their own streaming audio by constantly updating the What's Playing Where info (and ads), but I find it interesting. Custom Radio. Over 100 channels covering niches in niches. Not HiFi either, of course, but not bad for computer-grade speakers. A little more bandwidth and this could be interesting. In the meantime here's a little excerpt I think will interest some of you as I've seen Joy Askew's name pop up occasionally on the Ecto list. Joy is a keyboardist/singer/songwriter who has peformed with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson and Joe Jackson. Her Gorgeous Creatures mini-CD has been doing very well in The Artist Shop. Now we can offer Joy's fans her very first CD, Tender City, which was originally released a couple years ago on Private Music and which has since become somewhat of a rarity due to that label's demise. This comes to us from Joy's own private stock and features great performances from such guests as Peter Gabriel, Larry Fast, Chris Botti, Jerry Marotta, Larry Klein and more! Even more exciting is a brand new CD from Joy called When - A Bootleg. This CD is a collection of tracks Joy put together for the soundtrack of an independent film in New York plus some demos in her own Lo-Fi Studio. Prior to now, this CD has only been available through Joy at her concert performances. Of the three CD's we now have by her, I have to say that I find When - A Bootleg to be the most adventurous and exciting of the lot. Definitely a must have! You can check out all three of them at . I should be asleep but the concert was so good that I can't fall asleep. She wore the same outfit she wore at David Letterman. I hope she changed. :) I was slightly in shock because this was the first time I was close. (By the luck of the goddesses I got 6th row center.) I was very happy that she did Sugar with the band. Cornflake girl sounded so so much better with a band then how I originally heard it with that backing tape for UTP tour. The poor woman had the flu so I guess that's why she wasn't so chatty but she sang great despite that. She used alot of nasal inhaler! She also did one of my favorite song's "Sugar". I also liked that she would sometimes play the keyboard with one hand and at the same time play the piano with the other. The Devlins opened for her and I enjoyed them. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #250 **************************
