No, the HTML specification says that a browser should simply skip any
tags it doesn't recognize. So a "dumb" browser will just skip the
whole <object>, <param> and <script> stuff, ignore the <noembed> and
</noembed> tags and process the linked image at the bottom. This code
causes problems only when the browser understands the code to embed
the animation, but for some reason can't show the Shockwave file. Then
you get a blank page with nowhere to go. Of course this is an error,
there should be a plain link in addition to the animation or "client
pull" could be used to jump to the real home page after a while.

I'm using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, which isn't all that dumb (no
cracks from the peanut gallery, I know it has problems), and I still only 
get a blank page. I won't use the "home.htm" because I don't want to 
explore the site until it's fixed from page one. Until it is, I'd rather go to
a friendly, welcoming site like Sharon's.

That's it then. I don't have Shockwave or Active X and I have no intention
of getting these things. I also usually don't have my Java turned on, and I 
have no intention of turning it on. (I only turn it on when I'm visiting
Travelocity or Expedia, sites which actually use Java for intelligent
purposes rather than for useless flash and glitter).

Chris looked at it on his machine (he likes having all the latest plug-ins) and
was pretty appalled at how slow the site was. And we have ISDN! Since
things are slowly getting fixed, and Peggy Zier has expressed a willingness
to listen to what we have to say, I have high hopes that the site will evolve
into something useful for fans and the curious alike.

parameters as Java on/off, autoload images on/off, cookies on/off on a per
site or per web page basis.  Some pages use images well, others don't, etc. 
I don't want to have to reconfigure my browser all the time..

Take a look at www.intermute.com

It's a local proxy that can be configued as you want on a per
site basis. It also hides ads from the most well known banner-ad
services.

Here are some male artists that appeal to me, that might by some stretch of
the imagination be thought of as "ectophilic".

Bob Mould.  It surprised me to see him listed as having a profile in the
works, but hey, whatever floats your boat.  This is the man whose powerful
music changed my life, and for that alone he deserves a spot in the
pantheon.  I could go on, but you've heard it all already.

Chris Butler.  The father of math rock, whose been involved with some of
the most intriguing music out there, including a stint in the experimental
bar band Tin Huey and the sole writing credit on "The Devil Glitch", which
is recognized in Billboard magazine as being the world's longest pop song.
As Troy McClure might say, you might know the man best from his tenure as
the head songwriter and guitarist for one of the best, most innovative new
wave bands to come down the pike, the Waitresses.  (Yes, the "I Know What
Boys Like" band, but if you dig below that hit, you'll find some truly
warped arrangments and musical ideas, making you wonder what record buyers
seduced by the quirky little single would say to something as weird and
wonderful as "Jimmy Tomorrow".  Besides, he wrote the lyrics from the
believable perspective of a smart, urban young woman, which should net some
Ecto points!)

Scott Miller.  After catching the Loud Family's recent Boston show, I was
deligted to see Scott get a mention for a possible boy in the pantheon
here.  He specializes in smart pop that tickles the listeners' cerebral
cortex as surely as it makes them wanna da-a-a-a-nce.  Their latest record,
_Days for Days_, is a clever, streamlined pop masterpiece.

Hub Moore.  An articulate new singer/songwriter who provided a musical
Greek chorus for Hal Hartley's films.  His full-length solo debut, HUB, is
an account of nightlife gone awry set to some gorgeous, Luna-esque music.

Jeff Mangum.  Okay, he is awesome and Godlike for releasing an album as
wonderful as Neutral Milk Hotel's latest, _In An Aeroplane Over The Sea_.
I've said it all already, and there's nothing I can't say now that won't
bore you.

I have to agree. The more macho type fans who followed Fish-era
Marillion, and still follow Fish, generally have problems relating to
Hogey. However I like both vocalists. Marillion are two seperate bands
IMHO, Fish-era and current day H era. The latter is my personal fave,
however I believe Fish's best work has occured since he left.

So true so true ... I am not downloading a plugin just to get to
see one single webpage. That is just stupid and timeconsuming. 
Then I try to find some other place to find that information. I
like to do things simple myself - the pages are designed for the
info not the graphics and Lynx-users should not get any less info
than with graphical browsers. Atm I'm making the norwegian Ecto
pages (in norwegian of course), and I'll give you some kinda hint
when they are done. The design is almost there, but I need to get
some info in there, and translate and rewrite the FAQ (working on
it now). Eventually I'll be finished :)

	only two releases that i know.  DEATH TO THE PIXIES
which is a best of, as well as a bonus live concert CD, and the new CD
which i think is another live concert that the BBC recorded and
broadcasted (different from the PEEL SESSIONS) way back when.  At least
with the new releases, they are "new" material, previously unreleased
stuff.  with THE SMITHS, it was just regurgitated "best of" stuff, songs
that most people already had on previous releases.

stores, and i didn't know what it was, a live concert?  i have never seen
it before.  lack of money made me put it back (i don't think it is a
bootleg because it was released by a legit label) but i thought i would
ask.

pre-SUGARCUBES bjork project? is this worth checking out?  is it the punk
band that she was in, or am mixing it up with another one of her projects?
lately i have been on a bjork kick.  nothing wrong with that.

	AND finally, i have stayed out of the whole Pantheon listing, as
my is too flexible and most likely too nonecto to list, but i would just
like to say that i am surprised that no one has mentioned PJ HARVEY in
their list.  especially considering i know there are quite a few PJH fans
on this list, and PJH got quite a chat up a couple of years ago on the
LOVEHOUNDS list.  One of the most innovative experimental pop rock
artists in existence.  Plus those BJORKheads out there HAVE to get their
hands on their duet, I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION. quite fun. -LONG SHOT
but i'll try anyway, was anyone on the PJH mailing list three or four
years ago and part of the tape tree?  i have them, but lost the sequencing
list, and don't konw what i am listening to.

Was it "Coming Up Close: A Retrospective"? 

If so, it's not a live CD. It's a best-of, with one new song (Do
It Again).

Yeah, what SHE said!

Vickie discovered this one day many, many moons ago whilst browsing.  She
noted the names of some Gabrielesque people and threw caution and a few
bucks to the wind.

She later realized that the haunting and exquisite "Ballet Dream" was
used over and over and over again in Easy Spirit shoe commercials, which
ran for years.  

The album is by turns dark, brooding pop, shimmering ethereal overdubs,
and dancy fun.  Golden is one of those people I really wish would release
more music...

The word that instantly popped into my mind when I first listened to
BfP was "affected".  I had exactly the same reaction to the visual of
Tori on Leno or Letterman a few years ago, as I watched her gyrate on
the piano bench and achieve an NC-17 level of intimacy with the
microphone.

Given my impression of obvious affectation (and self-indlugence), I
haven't had any desire to listen to BfP again since it was new; after
all the talk here, I feel somewhat obliged to try again.  I quite like
_FtCH_, however.


Expecting the worst after the talk here and given the fact that I'm
using a UNIX browser (surprise, given my e-mail address :), I tried
the Samson site yesterday.  Much to my surprise, it worked without my
having to download anything and was unexpectedly speedy at displaying
to boot.  The content was admittedly thin, but the look was nice.

Sorry -- I mentioned the box's release a while ago, but I neglected to
say anything about the set itself (until now :).  Since I rank Genesis
as one of my two favorite artists of all time (Kate Bush being the
other), I naturally had to have the box set when it came out.  While I
routinely collect all of the "legitimate" discs of artists I follow, I
don't go for bootlegs, so I hadn't heard several of the old non-album
classics on discs 3 and 4 of the box set until it came out.

Discs 1 & 2 contain a live version of the Lamb; disc 3 contains
previously-unreleased live versions of older classics as well as some
B-sides; and disc 4 contains *very* early demos and B-sides (i.e.,
songs of the same or earlier vintage as the material on the first
Genesis album, _From Genesis to Revelation_, including demos of some
of that albums songs which show the band's and the material's
progression).

I'm not a huge fan of recordings of live shows, but the rarities on
discs 3 & 4 are well worth having, in my (biased) opinion.


Finally, is anyone else obsessed with the Cowboy Junkies' new album,
_Miles from Our Home_?  I got it at the same time I got Patty
Griffin's new album and some other things I expected to like better;
however, I can't get the Cowboy Junkies out of my CD player, while the
other things kind of flew through it.  I've also got _The Trinity
Sessions_ and _Lay it Down_; what other previous Cowboy Junkies' discs
should I be rushing out to get?

I posted once to this group and got three offline responses and one
online!
I'm gonna post all my answers back to the list, as a lot of the
questions were the same, and there was nothing personal in the mails (I
won't post personal stuff to public lists!)

The big question was when there will be new material available from
Kristy.  The answer is um, sooner than later.  We are currently
recording some stuff at our rehearsal space, which is actually better
than it sounds.  The space used to be a recording studio, but the
original tenants went broke.  We share the space with a friend of mine,
who has set up a hard-drive/ADAT studio in there, so it's actually
possible to do some good recording right where we are the most
comfortable playing.  Right now we've been mostly demoing stuff, but the
nice thing about the way we are doing it is that we can always add to
what we've done.  We're recording live off the floor right now, so we'll
see how that goes.

Another question was if we would be touring any time soon. Sadly, the
short answer is no.  We are totally self-funded, and the funds aren't
much, so it looks like we'll be sticking fairly close to home for the
next little while at least.  So we'll be playing mostly around
Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and maybe into Washington State as far
Seattle or so.  We are looking at some other ways of doing things -
festivals and such, but there's nothing firm enough to talk about yet.

The best thing I can offer is the Web site to be.  I'll be putting
together a server in the next few weeks and tossing it up on the Web
(that's what I do for a living anyway..).  It should be not problem to
make digital files of what we do record (probably mp3) and put them on
the server for people to download and play on their computers.  It's not
a tour, and it probably won't be a whole CD or anything, but on the
upside, it's free and you'll be the first to hear it.  I'll put
something on the list as soon as that is ready.

Milkrox also said nice things about bass, which is always good to hear.
And yes, I have checked out her site and it's real cool.

Besides the big recording issue, most of the other mails were folks
being nice and welcoming me to the list.  Thanks everyone!  I'm lucky
because I have a job that allows (no, actually requires) that I'm online
on a really fast link all the time, so I should be able to get keep
people right up to date with stuff as it happens.  I don't know if
people prefer to correspond offline or on, so if you send me anything
offline, please let me know which way you would like me to get back to
you.

I picked up _Miles from Our Home_ a couple of weeks ago when Neal
was visiting Boston, and I agree, it's been in my car or home CD
changer ever since...

_The Trinity Session_ is still my all-time favorite Junkies
album as I love the simplicty of it..._Whites Off Earth Now_ is
very similar in style (and preceded _The Trinity Session_). It's
hard to believe they were released 10-12 years ago.

_The Caution Horses_, _Black Eyed Man_, and _Pale Sun, Crescent
Moon_ were their other studio CDs.

If you want to get an overview of their work, get Studio, which
is a 'best-of' collection. There's also the live double-CD called
_200 More Miles_.

I also picked up Patty's _Flaming Red_, after waiting to hear the
single 'One Big Love', which I really love. I was very hesitant
about buying the CD as my last experience seeing Patty live was
extremely negative. Let's just say that her sound guy needs to
learn 2 words (moderation and appropriateness). She'll never be
invited back to that venue again, which is sad.

Anyway, if you've been turned off by her 'screaming' vocal style,
_Flaming Red_ is toned down considerably and is a pleasure to
listen to.

I got back from the weekend to find a long thread about pantheons
here, which I just read, and it has inspired me to post my own.
There's going to be some ecto-overlap, but I'm not sure how much.
For one thing, I tend to like a lot of male artists about as much as
female artists (strangely enough, I think I like female voices better
in English, but male voices better in most foreign languages).  I also
like a lot of instrumental music.

Anyway, here's my most selective pantheon of musical deities:

1. Alison Brown Quartet
2. Zap Mama
3. David Grisman Quintet
4. Fela Kuti
5. Boukman Eksperyans

I think I'll stop there, because I can't think of anyone else I'd add
that wouldn't make me feel like I'm diluting the quality of this list.
I'd have put moxy fruvous on the list, but it's not really their music
that would put them there, IMO, it's their... performership, or
something.  And Head & Leg aren't even music, for the most part.

I also tend to focus on some instruments and the people who play them
well.  So, I have another pantheon of my favorite on each instrument.
The banjo is my favorite, and didgeridoo, bodhran, bari sax, and
chapman stick round out the top five.

I love the banjo so much it merits a pantheon all its own, starting
with the "holy trinity" :-)

Pell Mell used to be on Geffen a few years ago or so, back when 
<Interstate> came out.  I'm assuming that this is a recent compilation?

huh, i remember them vaguely. boston-based. four or five years ago, when i
was heavier into the 4ad thang, i was thrilled by an ep they put out by a
band called sirensong. if i remember correctly, adam von buhler was a
member of said band, but i can't find my copy of the ep right now.

only band i know of is the curtain society which has a brilliant, shimmery
guitar sound. big fans of the chameleons and it shows. i thought they had
only one record (self-released) and an 7" on bedazzled records (which
features a kicking cover of the chameleons' "swamp thing" on the flip side).

well, i think kukl is worth checking out. in fact, i probably like them
more than the sugarcubes, though that's not too surprising since i only
really enjoyed _life's too good_. i don't know if kukl is the "punk band"
you're talking about, but they are a sort of angrier, younger, brasher
'cubes. two albums, as i recall, _the eye_ and _holidays in europe_ (the
latter might be a live record).

other pre-cubes bjork stuff: a solo album from 1977 which is silly pop and,
in 1983, when she was in a band called tappi tikarrass, an album called
_miranda_.
