This is my fifth Tori show. (2 UtP, 2 BfP) I was very anxious to hear her with a full band backing her up. I was not to be disappointed. Set opener: Precious Things.....If there ever was a Tori song that screamed for full instrumental back-up, this was it. I was so blown away by this performance. The ticket price was worth this song alone ($27.50....gen. admission). Very cool indeed. And ladies and gentlemen, the endless air raid siren that Girrrrrrrrrrl turned into last tour is less so now.... and the alterna-teens incessant screaming that usually follows is drowned out by the instruments. God bless America. For all intents and purposes, this is a rock concert. It's the first time I stood for a Tori concert. If you go in expecting what you saw the previous tours, you may be in for a shock. But it was such a good show anyways. You WILL kick yourself if you pass this up. Interesting observation #1: As the debate heats up on the list as to the merits or de-merits of Boys for Pele (I cast my vote in the extremely like column), it is interesting to note that only 1 song from BfP was played and that was a barely recongizable arrangement of Horses as an encore. The bulk of the set list came from UtP and FtCH. My bother said he's die if she didn't play "Hey Jupiter". She did not, but I'm glad to say he's recovering, albeit slowly. Interesting observation #2: No "Me and a Gun". I don't know what to make of it. I'm not sure that I miss it. It's a very tension filled and important song for her to perform, but I always cringe when she plays it in anticpation of some IDIOT screaming "We love you Tori!!!" during the song. I'd be interested to hear if she plays it later in the tour. Here are the songs she played in no particualr order aside from the encores which I remember.... Precious Things i i e e e Cruel Jackie's Strength The Waitress (again...really wierd arrangement....but it worked well) Cornflake Girl Cloud on My Tongue Space Dog Crucify China Honey (B-side) Encore 1:She's Your Cocaine Raspberry Swirl Encore2:Horses All in all, the band worked well for the tour. Some arrangements lost their subtlety in concert. (The She's Your Cocaine arrangement/mix is much cleaner and more musically affective on the disc.) Still give it a thumbs up. This brought Tori back into first place in my heart ahead of Sarah McLachlan who, as has been stated already, has not endeared herself to me with her latest album. Go Tori!) Well, I just have to be the odd man out here. _Under the Pink_ is my favorite Tori album whenever I'm listening to it. _LE_ is my favorite the rest of the time. I also tend to play UtP more often than any of the others, because it's an album I can work to. It's, with obvious exceptions, more upbeat and energetic than the others. There isn't one song I'd skip over, wheras _LE_ has a few, one in particular that darn near ruins the album for me if I don't get to the CD player in time to skip it. UtP is as brilliant to me as others are saying BfP are to them. Granted though, I never got into BfP, and only listened to it a couple of times. I keep meaning to try try again until I too "get it" but I always seem to think "ah, not now" and reach for UtP instead. I just *LOVE* _From the Choirgirl Hotel_ but I still don't think I'll ever like it more than UtP. Jill-- Here's what the EctoGuide files have on Eden: From: Anthony Horan EDEN ~~~~ A Melbourne band signed to Projekt in the US, Eden have reinvented themselves after all but their founding member departed acrimoniously after recording the luscious "Healing Bow" EP (available from Projekt) and an album to follow it (recorded but never mixed or released). Now they're back as a fresh band with the songwriting of Sean Bowley intact and a new emphasis on acoustic instruments and less keyboards; two new albums are coming out. The main one is "Fire And Rain" and it's quite magnificent; sometimes big, epic and loud (in a jangly way!), others sinister, dark and filmic. If you liked "Healing Bow" you're going to love this; a cover version of "I Am Stretched On Your Grave" is here, by the way, recorded independently of the knowledge that Dead Can Dance had recorded one live. The other album is "Earthbound", a collection of remixes of tracks from the first album, a few tracks that didn't make it to "Fire And Rain", and a live version of a track from "Healing Bow". Also wonderful stuff, though it really only makes complete sense when you have the album proper. Both are coming out "soon" on Projekt; in Australia, "Earthbound" will release first for some unknown reason - it's out here this month, while "Fire And Rain" will surface in January, both through Shock Distribution. Sean thinks this is the finest recorded work he's ever done. I tend to agree. Their more recent offerings (with lead singer Steve Hogarth) definitely have an ecto-ish flair. Albums to recommend: Brave, Afraid of Sunlight and This Strange Engine. Brave is a conceptual piece about a young woman molested by her father and then lost in a grown-up world of drugs and feelings of suicide. It's a deeply moving album that has changed my life. (I'd be happy to tape it for anyone on this list....) Live, Hogarth plays these songs in pigtails and lipstick. Hogarth has an uncanny way of relating to the female perspective that extends beyond Brave. And once you see Marillion live, you are hooked for life. It's too bad they aren't very popular here in the US anymore--they've always been pegged with the "prog-rock" label even though they've abandoned that sound years ago. Oh, and to continue on topic of ectophilic male artists: yes, Peter Gabriel, but also add Robbie Robertson, Adrian Belew, XTC, Jeff Buckley and Francis Dunnery. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 16:09:25 -0400 (EDT) From: sam Subject: katell k. in the uk hello, for all in the uk or thereabouts, katell keineg will be playing in Birmingham on the 2nd of August, at a songwriter's festival. It looks like you can go direct to http://www.samsonmusic.com/home.htm to get to the main page, though. Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 20:15:35 -0400 From: Horter!!!! The first two things I noticed were the "Rhoades" alt text and over 125K of images to make up an entry page from which I still had to make menu selections ... nice graphic, tho. only other comment - I came to this list more through connections with the "other" ecto artists than Happy - and must say that I've learned *much more* about Happy & her music from this list, the Ectophiles' Guide, & Vickie's & Sharon's sites than Samson's. At least they do have one sound sample up there - and actually offer different connection speeds & recommend non-Windows players! tho at the same time I suspect it's RealAudio 5.0, and thus still out of reach of many surfers with older machines. Was it Meth that made the joke about the webmaster working in the IBM commercial?? . ... fingers crossed for the 'real substance' which will appear when the album is released ... I was in the record store the other day and I saw they had a 2 disc Toni Childs greatest hits set. That has to conceptually be one of the strangest ideas I've heard of. Far as I know, she's only got 3 discs, and hasn't contributed to lots of soundtracks and samplers. Plus, the 3rd disc (The Woman's Boat) is thematic and shouldn't be cut up. Course, a quick glance looked like it might have been all of TWB with half of Union and House of Hope. Steve, you should go look for The Woman's Boat! Given your tastes, I can pretty much guarantee you'll love it. It's sort of a concept album of a woman's journey from birth to death. So beautiful. Oh, and maybe this will help.... There's a duet with Peter Gabriel on it. (Really, I wasn't just trying to make you buy it :) And I was quite happy in the record store, since I saw for the first time ever used ..... The Cocteau Twins box. $40 still seemed a bit silly for it, but close enough to reasonable for me to pick it up. neal np: The Nields - 'mousse ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 1998 00:10:46 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Laterna in Gaithersburg I caught Lanterna at the Borders in Gaithersburg tonight. It was a livingroomy kinda thing, considering how casual they were and that there were maybe a dozen people listening. I liked the music and got the CD. More than anything else, it reminded me of Phil Manzanera's work with 801. (When I mentioned this to Henry, he wasn't familiar with Manzanera, but said he might check him out.) (I was kinda put off by their use of a taped drum track, but it was understandable considering they were touring in one car.) Interestingly, several of us there found out about it from mailing lists: me from ecto, one from the Projekt list, and I forget the others. (Hmm, listening to the CD now, and there's a vocal track that reminds me of Double singing in their sleep. Probably good that it was an all- instrumental performance :-]). BTW, Henry was raving about the new Area reissues on Projekt. The external packaging is quite good, and he said the packages on a whole were a lot better than the originals. n.p. All I get is insulted (because I don't have "Active X") and then a blank screen. No alts, no other way to access information, no nothing. A big, fat, rude, blank page. I guess I won't be seeing the Samson site anytime soon. Just like a large percentage of the people who'll go there (including most people with Netscape & Web TV). The designer has to go back to the drawing board and start over again. Bells and whistles are perfectly fine, *if* and only if the site's information is also viewable by everybody who doesn't care about the bells and whistles. I've been seeing this "only the design counts, the information doesn't" mindset for years and it only hurts the business, because people just looking for information won't come back. When you go into a store you're not told "you can't come in and look at the merchandise or ask questions unless you have this and this and this. Go get these things and then come back." Yet that's what's happening with hundreds of thousands of web sites that are there supposedly to sell something and/or provide information. It's a designer thing. Not a service-oriented thing. And usually, the designer's hurt feelings and defensive posturing ("well, then they should update their computer") are far more important than the curious/consumer. So nothing gets done, and everybody loses except the pleased-with-themselves designer. Prove me wrong Samson. Please, prove me wrong. Make the information that's there available to people like me. I'll even tell you how. I'll do it for FREE!
