I was working in the dining room trying to sort out my cassettes* today and I listened to The October Project for the first time in ages. You're right, they are very wonderful. I still cry when I hear "Bury My Lovely" which is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. The rest of the songs are great too. I'll listen to the 2nd album tomorrow. One of many "missed concert" regrets is the time we missed seeing TOP open for Sarah. The show sold out before we got tickets and we didn't think to go there the day of the show to see if any tickets were released. We found out later there were some released. We remembered that the next time Sarah was in town and we got tickets the day of the show, but The October Project weren't opening for her then. (Paula Cole was, and we got great seats too) What is Mary Fahl doing now? I can't believe I forgot to list them in my earlier post, but then, I wasn't thinking of bands so much as single artists. (I also forgot Maria McKee and Toni Childs!) Vickie * I have to be the worst person in the world about marking videos and cassettes. Does anyone know if she's up to anything musically? I'd love to see a new album! It's true, her material is often beneath the quality of her ability, but I just love to hear her sing. I really loved her last 2 solo albums. Like Jeff B., I'm resisting the urge to list my own pantheon for fear of forgetting someone, and also because it is rather fluid. For the longest time, Kate was my ultimate goddess, but because of her recent (make that last few) albums, she slipped, and Jane Siberry took over. Although Hounds of Love still remains my ultimate musical experience, Jane has The Walking and When I Was a Boy that are so close to matching HoL. But I see the wisdom in the suggestion that everyone should just post his or her own personal list and see where they overlap. I'd also like to say that we should try to keep this a happy(!) exercise, not a debate with campaigns pro and, especially, con (I know, this from the seat of negative energy on Ecto). If you don't like an artist nominated or mentioned, your lack of overlap is negative vote enough. Let's not turn this into a feast of insult one-upsmanship (although the lead-enema thing would be hard to top). I say this for two reasons, both selfish: this doesn't seem like the kind of situation where there's any value in trashing one another's taste--remember, this may feel a little more personal to some people, since we're not really objectively discussing the work of an artist, we're sharing and exposing our greatest loves. And the second reason is--don't get me started! Some of the names already mentioned make it difficult for me to swallow, and some, if inducted, would make me seriously redefine what Ecto means to me. I hereby suggest that there be no negative voting at all: run 'em up a flag pole to see who salutes, but don't go shooting others down. K? K. But I went because Tara MacLean was opening and because she and Bill (her guitarist/partner) are really enthusiastic about Patty, and wanted to do this one-off gig during their touring hiatus because they're really into her music. So I figured that was a pretty good recommendation. Anyway, she rocked. I felt the occasional bit of cultural cognitive dissonance - I felt I was listening to a good ol' white boy southern bar band with a country-style vocalist sometimes - but it worked. Groovy. She also looked so funny - this very small woman with a wild shock of red hair, surrounded by her big hunky band. I wonder what they thought of the audience, though. There weren't that many people standing at the front of the dance floor area - most of the crowd were sitting and standing around the edges, like there was this invisible line that the audience dared not cross, and they didn't want to too close to the stage or something. One where BfP is the acclaimed release, and the other which seems to fall into the LE first, UtP/FtCH next, and BfP far behind, seemingly never to catch up. I've loved Tori since the moment I heard LE when it came out. UtP took a little while to grow on me, but it has a very definite place for a very specific mood now. The latest release took about three spins for me to click with it, but then it went !!!CLICK!!! and didn't leave my changer until last week when I picked up Imogen Heap. Someone here recently described BfP as masturbatory (I forget who--my apologies), and I have to say that when I read it, I thought "Yeah...that sums it up for me." Because of all the discussion, I have made it a point to pull it out and plan to give it a few really good listens, though. For me, it seemed that it was musically and lyrically "out there" for the sake of being "out there". I found nothing to relate to. While I certainly don't think that all music has to be accessible and all lyrics don't have to be interpretable, a whole album of it was too much for me. It kind of reminds me of the progression that marked Rickie Lee Jones' releases. First one was catchy...Pirates was brilliant...then the lyrics started to be a little too obscure...and the music was a little more abstract...and it just kept going...and going. So anyway, I guess maybe I have philistine taste. I don't know. I like some pretty far- out stuff. Back to the drawing board (or listening room as it were) for me and BfP. I'd say it depends on what it is that you get from her music. If it's the brilliance, uniqueness or challenge you're after than BfP is it. But many of us tuned into the emotional content, and for that few things can touch LE... I can appreciate, and indeed admire BfP, but it's LE that I love, and that's probably how things will stay. Also, LE is now what - 6 years old? It has all sorts of historical baggage attached and probably this is what really makes it so special to me. As I look back now it reflects and captures a very definite stage of my life. BfP on the other hand was simply another record. Good, great, whatever - but to me it just never had the same importance... __________________________________________________ Some people, you just wanna headbutt them in the hope of direct data download.... I guess everyone's experience with the album is going to be unique. While I've never gone through what Tori went through to inspire her to make _BfP_, for some reason the first time I listened to it I was completely, utterly blown away. I was driving home and by the last notes of "Twinkle" I could barely keep my car on the road. I couldn't even start it over again for some minutes ... I had to just shut the stereo off and drive in silence for a while until I had composed myself enough to be able to listen again. I still don't know what exactly it is, but something in me connected with that album on a very, very deep level. In my mind, only a masterwork of the highest order can do that. I have no idea why anyone would call it "masturbatory". I'm genuinely curious. I find this reaction to the album as fascinating as it is unfathomable. Is it because some of the songs were written as they were being recorded? That's not the first time she's done that ("Thoughts", "Bells For Her"). Is it because she experimented with different instrumentation? If anything I'd call _FTCH_ more masturbatory than _BfP_ on that front - all those keyboard doohickies going on. Is it because she was singing about deeply personal emotional things? What was _LE_, then? Andrew added: >But many of us >tuned into the emotional content, and for that few things can touch LE... Whoever was singing backup was always potted up higher than whomever was singing lead on a particular song, the bass was practically inaudible, and it sounded like the drums weren't miked at all. On "Snowman" in particular the vocals were a mess: every time Nerissa belted out the chorus the guy would panic and pot her down, so when she got back to the quiet part she could barely be heard. Then he would gradually bring her back up until she belted out the next chorus, and the whole cycle would start over again. Things on the sound front didn't get any better for Dar. Sound dude didn't remember to turn Stephanie Winters' cello on until halfway through the first song, Dar's guitar was either too soft or too loud, depending on what it really needed to be for the song; and again, the backing vocals were always louder than Dar's lead vocals. The most egregious thing didn't happen until the very end, but I'll get to that in a minute. Dar played for just about an hour, which totally flew by. Let's see if I can remember the set list: If I Wrote You What Do You Love More Than Love Are You Out There You're Aging Well The Babysitter's Here Wilder Than Her What Do You Hear In These Sounds Iowa As Cool As I Am I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (encore 1) When I Was A Boy (encore 2) I think I'm forgetting one, but I can't remember what it might be. I was proud of myself for not running out of the pavilion area screaming when she started up with "The Babysitter's Here". :) Is that going to be like her "American Pie"??? I would much rather have heard "End Of The Summer" or anything else. Oh well. The highlight of the evening came when Nerissa and Katryna joined her on stage to sing backup on "Iowa" and "As Cool As I Am". They slipped onstage halfway through "Iowa", but people started cheering as soon as they became visible. They started out on two mics, but one of them was much louder than the other so they eventually ended up sharing Katryna's, which was really cute. Their vocals on "As Cool As I Am" were perfect. Then they came out again for the first encore and did the Hank Williams classic. This was when the worst sound error of the night took place. They were supposed to sing the second verse, and they did, but their mic wasn't turned on! Sound dude was sitting there frantically pushing up sliders, but nothing happened. Dar asked the audience if we'd heard that and we all shouted "no", so she rather pointedly said "Well, let's try that again - with sound this time, how about that?". Katryna finally tried the other mic and that one was on, so they just moved to that and continued. It was a gorgeous rendition of the song. Dar, Katryna and Nerissa should go on tour as a trio. Or maybe they could bring Stephanie with them too - yeah, that would be great. :) I can't wait to see them all again next weekend at Falcon Ridge. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 23:20:51 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Tori News from RDT >Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 19:55:17 -0700 (PDT) >From: Greg Burrell >To: torinews@smoe.org >Subject: Tori News from RDT >Sender: owner-torinews@smoe.org >Precedence: bulk > >Hi Everybody, 7/17/98 > > > CONCERTS > These are all the concerts that Tori's management confirmed > as going on sale in the near future: > > ------------------------------------------------------------ > Concert City Venue On-Sale > Date Date > ------------------------------------------------------------ > 8/29 Norman, OK Lloyd Noble Center 7/18 > 8/30 Omaha, NE Orpheum Theater 7/18 > 9/19 San Jose, CA SJ State Events Center 7/19 > 9/24 Las Vegas, NV The Joint 7/25 > > > TOUR PLAN > Tori's management is hard at work lining up more concerts. > The tour will continue from Southern California into Arizona, > New Mexico, and Texas.
