I arrived home from a week's vacation to find a big box of CDs I had ordered from A&B Sound (my favorite source of music next to Borders and IndiePool). Here's what was in it: Susan Aglukark - Christmas....I had hoped for a little more (Susan's voice sounds a tad flat sometimes), but this is a nice addition to my Christmas music collection. She sings in Inuit (?) on most of the songs. Holly Cole Trio - Christmas Blues....Why do I love her so much? I didn't even know this treasure existed until recently and am soooooo glad I found it -- even though it's only four tracks. A Canadian Brass Christmas.......haven't listened to this yet, but I know I'll love it. Count Your Blessings/Jane Siberry, Holly Cole, Rebecca Jenkins, Victoria Williams, Mary Margaret O'Hara.....Someone burned a copy of this for me, but I've always wanted a *real* copy of it......one of my very favorite Christmas albums! Sook-Yin Lee - Wigs 'N Guns......Where in the world did I ever get the idea I should buy this? All I can say is that Sook-Yin is......ummmm......different! The Beautiful South - Choke......This album made me think there are some deep, dark secrets in the lives of The Beautiful South......child abuse maybe? Sully - I Have Much To Report......I like this more than I thought I would. Would this be considered *ambient* music? Sara Craig - Miss Rocket......I've heard her name bantered around a bit and thought I'd take a chance. She's wonderful!!! I went back to the A&B Sound website and ordered three more of her albums! Laura Smith - It's a Personal Thing......Pleasant folky stuff.....reminded me of Dar Williams at times......or was that this next one......? Heather Bishop - Old New Borrowed Blue......More folky stuff......sometimes it's good enough to have just one cd from an artist.....at least until their music grows on you. ;-) The Housemartins - Now That's What I Call Quite Good.......Perfect for when you're in the mood for something fun and upbeat. Oh Susanna - self-titled.......Yes, I can imagine her at Lilith Fair. I expected this to be a little more pop instead of the strong folky *girl and a guitar* that it is. I also received a couple of tapes people had dubbed for me: Terri Hendrix......nice country stuff.....I have to check out her website....www.terrihendrix.com (thanks to Mike Fulcher) Happy Rhodes - Many Worlds Are Born Tonight.......This is soooooo wonderful! Thanks, Marty! It will tide me over until I can get my hands on the actual cd....Does anyone else think it sounds a little more *commercial* than some of her previous albums? Not that there's anything wrong with that. Final note: Has anyone ever ordered from an online company called New World? I just ordered Jane Siberry's obscure import cd, "Summer in the Yukon," Damhnait Doyle's "Shadows Wake Me" (I couldn't wait, tab!), Veda Hille's "Songs About People and Buildings," and Barbara Lynch's "Goodbye and Goodluck" from them and hope I don't have any problems. That's all for now. OK, you got me... this was my favorite until Not Alone unseated it. It's still pretty much a toss up. Since you are the lyrics-master, Jeff, what are your thoughts on the deeper meaning of BB? Also, I notice it is a poem (?) by someone not in the band... Malcolm McKay. Anyone know anything about this guy? Is he famous? :-) As far as interpretation goes, the music behind BB as pertaining to the lyrics is mind-stretchingly perfect. Other artists whose musical interpretations (setting to music) of poetry I regard highly include Noa and Gil Dor on their second album (filled with Hebrew poetry from a very famous one-named Hebrew poet, Rachel (I think -- pop me if I'm wrong)). Speaking of rediscovering music, prompted by a request to the Ectophiles' Guide I just popped Sheila Chandra's _ABoneCroneDrone_ in the player. I'd forgotten how gorgeous and haunting her music is--I don't know why she isn't more in my forebrain because she's way up there in my personal musical pantheon. Anyway, what stunning music. Soooo...what I'm wondering is, first of all, can anyone think of the possible name of the other group? The CD I heard had a song about needing time to say I love You as well as a drinking song, among others. If you name some off I'll probably recognize it. Secondly, if one of you who live in Canada would be willing to pick them up for me and send em my way after I send you money, I'd be GREATLY appreciative :) Thanks for any info, help, etc anyone can offer. Patrick reported: >Oh yeah, can't remember if this was on the release list or not but if >anyone doesn't have Heather Nova's first (Blow), it's being re-issued in >the US today. Interesting - it's not on the ICE list. But if it really did come out today, I hereby exhort everyone to seek and buy! It's a live disc, and it's by far my favorite Heather Nova album. Or EP. Or whatever. I imagine I'm probably going to regret not going to see her play in NYC tonight, but I'm booked up with stuff from tomorrow through Falcon Ridge, so I think I picked the wise course. WARNING: SPOILERS FOR MWABT AHEAD! woj opined: >i agree with neal: textured, layered, >anbient-ish pop tunes (no, that's not an oxymoron), but i doubt there's a >breakout album here. I've had fewer listens (this is one of the few times I've regretted having a CD player in my car instead of a tape deck), but I agree as well. On the first couple listens it didn't really make an impression on me one way or the other, but now, as hoped (or expected :) the nuances are coming out and it's starting to show itself to me. All I can say for now is, I like. >i think _mwabt_ could catch the electronica wave and find some success in >those circles. inadvertantly or not. I see that happening before any sort of "commercial" success. I also suspect that John DiLiberto is going to be playing tracks from MWABT on Echoes for many years to come. (However, that doesn't mean I want to slap Ofer any less for putting it into the New Age section at the radio station. :) This is *not* a New Age album. Electronica? Maybe. Ambient with lyrics? Definitely. New Age? Not in the least little bit.) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 22:14:34 -0500 (CDT) From: Michael Curry Subject: Susan McKeown - news/July 14 1998 (fwd) Rather long, but interesting enough to make it worth the read. Pay special attention to Susan's far-ranging tour plans at the end, which include dates on the East and West coasts as well as swings through Germany and Ireland. - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 19:07:14 +0100 From: Sheila-na-Gig Music To: chanting@earthlink.net Subject: Susan McKeown - news/July 14 1998 Here's the recent news regarding Susan McKeown: In May and June Susan ventured west, performing with Hothouse Flowers' Liam O Maonlaí at the Paramount Theatre in Denver during the AfIM(Association for Independent Music) Convention there - a gathering of non-major-label folks. Susan & Liam made duets out of "The Mountain Streams Where the Moorcocks Crow" and "Cathain", a Ronan O Snodaigh song which Liam recorded for the Common Ground album. "Through the Bitter Frost & Snow" was nominated for an AfIM award for "Best Seasonal Release". Then it was on to gigs in Des Moines and Oregon and Washington with Lindsey Horner and Aidan Brennan, ending up in Anchorage for the Alaska Irish Festival. In the meantime, Natalie Merchant called and asked if Susan would open for her at a benefit concert for Head Start at the Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, NY on June 6. Susan was delighted to oblige, as were Lindsey and Greg Anderson, who accompanied her. Greg had to dash up by air from another gig in Pennsylvania to make the performance. The following morning it was back west on a 6:30am flight to Portland, Oregon, to perform at the Allegro Convention. Allegro is the company which distributes both PRIME and ALULA, among other labels. After a rapid pre-show rehearsal, killer bassist Glen Moore of the band Oregon joined Susan and Aidan onstage for their set. Then after some sleep, it was back to New York the following day and into Fleadh mode. Susan & The Chanting House played the Village Voice Stage on Saturday June 13 and the tent was packed to capacity. It was a muddy event, a bit like crossing a bog every time you wanted to see someone play, so they were glad to be performing on the largest covered stage. Post-Fleadh work has consisted mainly of preparation for two new recordings Susan will be putting to tape in August. One is the follow-up to "Bushes & Briars" for ALULA, and the other is the MOTHER Record, which is to be released on Northstar next Spring. That's an album idea of Susan's, which she proposed to Robin Spielberg and Cathie Ryan after the three shared a dressing room at the taping of the 'Soul of Christmas' PBS show. It will be out in advance of Mother's Day 1999. And the gigs continue..last weekend there were two wonderful gigs with Johnny Cunningham in New Bedford and Eastham, MA, which featured songs from "Bushes & Briars", tunes from Johnny, and a special set of selections from "Peter & Wendy". The accompanist was Eamon O'Leary. Then on Sunday Susan & Eamon did an acoustic set in the wonderfully intimate surroundings of Grassy Hill, a house concert venue in Lyme, Connecticut. This weekend coming up (July 18,19) Susan will perform with Lindsey and Aidan at the Vancouver Folk Festival in Canada, and a week later there are dates in Decatur, GA and North Carolina. Then it's heads down into the studio. At the end of August there will be a Towne Crier gig, with a New York City date planned for October 10. Below is a list of upcoming dates: we'll be updating soon so make sure to check Carolyn Andre's great music pages for the latest. Suggestions, comments etc. can be addressed to Susan from there.
