The concert took place in the ruin of Castle Wilhelmstein in Würselen, near Aachen, in the far west of Germany. The venue is a very beautiful place, a small amphitheatre (good view from practically every seat) with a permanently installed tent roof. (Happy, if you're already thinking about a european tour, this is a venue to consider :-) birds #1: Redstarts were nesting in a gap in the wall high above the stage, regularly passing above our heads. Their offspring made a noise like a bunch of sparrows at every feeding, which amused the artists more than once. When Veda Hille came on stage, she was welcomed with a rather reserved applause. Maybe the others had never heard anything by her before (like me, errmm), or maybe her outfit was part of the reason :). She played a 40-minute set, accompanying herself on a tenor guitar or on Holly Cole's keyboarder's Kurzweil synth. Judging from the applause in the end, she clearly won the audience over, even had to do an encore. I took the chance and bought her album "Here is a picture (Songs for E Carr)", which was on sale at the venue. Have listened to it only once yet, but would definitely recommend it. After a 20 minute break Holly Cole came on stage, actually her band came first and started playing, Holly started singing from the off. The concert was great, Holly's voice, the musicians, the sound, couldn't have been better. (well, maybe a bit longer :) They did mostly songs from her new album "Dark Dear Heart", but also a few older songs. I recognized "I can see clearly now", "Que sera sera", "Train Song" and "Calling you". birds #2: Near the end of "Cry (if you want to)", right after she sang the words "cry if you want to", we heard a rather loud cock-a-doodle-doo from a nearby garden. This made Holly, the band and the audience laughing so hard that she had to interrupt the song. Holly seemed to be in a good mood anyway, like when she introduced their drummer: "He is new to the band, has only played 5 or 6 gigs with us, so he's still a bit green. And nervous", [turns to the drummer] "I don't want to put any pressure on you, but it's really important that you don't screw up this song". She finished her set after about 90 minutes (incl. two encores) under standing ovations. ciao, Rolf - --- "The next song is from my album 'Blame it on my youth", or, as Billboard magazine called it, 'Blame it on my mouth". But I didn't care, I was glad to be in Billboard anyway." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 10:16:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Joe Casadonte Subject: Re: Happy Rhodes Mousepads??? Wanted to pass along an update about Lisa Moscatiello (an occasional sharer of gigs with Susan McKeown) Lisa is the current lead singer for the NYC Celtic band Whirligig, and former vocalist for The New St. George. Her debut solo ablum, "Innocent When You Dream" runs the gamut from Celtic to Country to Cabaret, and was voted "Contemporary Folk Album of the Year" by the Washington Area Music Association. Her website, formerly at the late Hidden Water, is now located at: http://house-of-music.com/lisa/ Lisa will be one of the musicians performing at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival's "New Artist Showcase", which begins at noon on Friday, July 24 on the mainstage. 26 artists will each showcase 2 songs (or 10 minutes of music) during this special part of the festival. Listings of the other artists scheduled for this showcase - as well as the entire festival - are found on the Falcon Ridge website (http://www.falconridgefolk.com) at http://www.falconridgefolk.com/performers.html Information on Lisa's other gigs can be found on her website and on Musi-Cal (http://concerts.calendar.com) fair labelling notice: This advertisement was brought to you on dual tracks : from a fan of Lisa's music, including her possibly non-ecto techno venture with Arthur Loves Plastic ("Teflon Diva" features her vocals http://www.arthurlovesplastic.com) and as webkeeper for her site. I love it dearly (and one of these days I'll dig it up on CD). The band released some other stuff (_Glances Askances_ was another album; I can't recall if I ever heard it. I think there might have been a third). I'm not positive, but I think I'd have to go with "Bloomsbury Blue" as my favorite track on the album. Rebecca Pidgeon's solo stuff is pretty easily available, at least online. She's had 3 solo albums (_The Raven_, _New York Girls' Club_, and this year's _Four Marys_). I've got the first, but don't think it's as good as the Ruby Blue material I've heard. The solo albums seem to be easily available online... > 3) Cranberries -- No Need to Argue (now playing) > Wow. Heh. Strangely, another album I listened to numerous times last month, after a long hiatus. As somebody else said, the first album (_Everybody's Doing It So Why Can't We?_) is also great, though personally I can't tolerate the song "Dreams." Parts of this are much crunchier than the _No Need to Argue_, and I don't think the lyrics are quite as strong over all. Still, a must-have in my book. I never bothered getting the third album, based on what I was hearing on the radio and comments on ecto, though I thought "Salvation" was a pretty groovy track. jeff np: still just the white noise... ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #227 **************************
