Hmm...here's what I wrote in my online diary on Monday, July 6th (before I got caught up on my Ecto mail ::grin::): I got the single CD of Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers' Dance" (I have had "The Book of Secrets", the CD this is from, for some time) and Patty Griffin's new CD, "Flaming Red", yesterday, so everyone got to hear *those*. WOW, "Flaming Red" is one album that really hits you and doesn't let up! I *love* this woman's voice! I was bowled over when I heard her sing "Cain" on the Lilith Fair double CD. Then I got her first CD, "Living With Ghosts", and was surprised that it seemed so reserved, and was so quietly acoustic. I like it...but I was expecting to be knocked down, like with "Cain"! Well, "Flaming Red" has now lived up to that! Youza! - -------------------------- As you can tell, this CD is spun just about everyday here at my house! On a Happy note: I have been listening to Happy music a LOT lately, probably because I am getting so eager for "Many Worlds are Born Tonight". I now (Happily ::s::) have all her back catalogue...but what do I listen to? The one I was hooked by first: "Building the Colossus". I love to sing along on songs (anyone's songs); but yesterday I just shut up and *listened* to the exquisite layering of vocals, Happy's incredible range, Kevin's gorgeous bass-playing, the heart-tugging melodies, etc. etc. etc.! How can music this familiar still sound so fresh? I guess because this is true Art. I can't wait for the world at large to find out what an incredible singer/songwriter/musician Happy is! ::bounce bounce:: fleur - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Joanna M. I take a lot of slack for having provocative posters hanging on the walls (actually, the Milla poster has not provoked much discussion, it's all those Kate posters that really get people talking!), but I spend alot of time explaining that it's a tribute to the music, not the body. I think this is mostly true. I've also got victoria williams and sarah up. And Michael Smith -- now there's an amazing singer/songwriter for you. I'm not sure if it's still available; maybe I'll check CDNow later or something. They had an album after that (title isn't coming to me) which did not, as far as I know, get picked up in the US. It has a couple M2OH tracks on it as well. I'll type in titles and stuff when I get home and can look at the boxes again. By the way, as far as I know, _Puerto_Angel_ is the only place you can find a recording of Mary Margaret's version of her own _Dark_Dear_Heart_, which most of us know only from Holly Cole's far inferior cover of it. (I am, of course, a huge Holly Cole fan, but she just doesn't seem to get the mood of this song right.) Oh wait, there is one other recording of M2OH doing _DDH_: a recording I made sitting front-row center at her show at Fez a few years ago. The one where Victoria Williams came onstage and they sang a few songs together. My favorite song is probably still Empty, but there are at least 5 others that could be: Icicle Melts, 21, Yeat's Grave, etc. Does anyone think any of their other albums are better?! (not sure if I've heard them all) To be fair, before these 3 (re)enterred my consciousness, it was Patty Griffin, Living with Ghosts for about 3 months. Absolutely stellar. Is this her only release? Her name is Julieta Venegas, and she has a new CD called _Aqui_. All of the songs are written in Spanish. The first song I played reminded me of a Spanish Veda Hille and the second of a Spanish Heather Nova (although I played the songs after Veda Hille and Heather Nova selections, and I am very impressionable). The production is very strong and original. I think that Julieta plays piano. Does anyone have any knowledge of this artist? I went to her web pages, which were all in Spanish (of which I speak none). The most I could gather is that she is from Mexico and possibly was born in 1970. The CD is on BMG, and this label has just released CDs by a couple of other new "alternative" Hispanic artists. I was just thinking that of all the artists I've heard about on Ecto, I can't remember seeing many Hispanic performers. Our station hasn't yet received the new Happy Rhodes CD. I've been bugging our music director about it constantly, so maybe it will show up soon. - --Valerie Kraemer ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 22:23:06 -0500 From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Subject: Re: Indigo Girls (fwd) Sherlyn Koo writes: > > Just got this in the mail from Epic Records - it's their > once-in-a-blue-moon Indigo Girls information update... > I can't believe they spelled the surname of one of their > own artists wrong! Imagine Alanis Morissette in a lower register and a much less shrill, then throw in a large dose of Veda Hille (echoes of "Slumber Queen" kept coming to mind as I jumped from song to song), and maybe even a little Sarah Slean piano. (not sure if >I've heard them all) Their first one, "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We" is equally as good as "No Need To Argue" IMHO. The vein is more consistently in the Sundays/dream pop style, though there's a bit of grunt even here (Waltzing Back, How). However, the real gems are the beautiful songs, and at this stage Dolores' voice hadn't grown whiny, so songs like Dreams, Sunday, Linger, I Will Always and Put Me Down are really beautiful. It was the tape that was always in my walkman when I went to China in 95. Tim ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #223 **************************
