Sony's MDM-X4mkll minidisc recorder will give you 10 analog inputs with two aux sends into 4 track digital for about 700 bucks. It drastically decreases recording time on the disc. Fostex came out with an interesting new toy that can use a zip-drive or your computer's hard drive for storage of four track digital program without the compression inherent in minidisc systems. It's the Fostex FD-4 and goes for under five hundred bucks. If multi-tracking is a concern and mucho moola is not a problem a Tascam D88 8 track A-DAT might be a better bet. None of these would be suitable for clandestine recording. Bits and waves dropped during gating and compression and from clipping effect the feel of the program as much as the sound. Once in the digital realm, regardless of the medium, a quality microphone will make more difference than anything else. You might get a better result with a cassette walkman and a Neumann (sp?) than with a Nagra (sp?) and a fugazy microphone. I've been using Minidisc equipment for about 8 months and have been delighted with the result. The convenience of size and re-recordability are phenomenal (but dangerous for an obsessive sampler-tape-maker like myself -- you can spend hours editing, deleting and re-ordering your sampler discs). The compression algorithms now in use produce recordings that are indistinguishable from the CDs I've recorded and I've been *very* happy with Minidisc recordings I've made in my home studio. Minidisc recorders also tend to require *much* less maintenance and care than DAT machines -- especially portables. A good starting point for investigating Minidisc is http://www.minidisc.org which also provides pointers to the Minidisc mailing list -- a great source for the kind of info you request. The BBC now uses Minidisc for a lot of on-air stuff (if my sources are correct) and Stereo Review recently ran a very positive review of (I think) a Denon MD recorder. The favorites of the concert-taping crowd are Sharp's 70X series and Sony's small recorders. There is an English rock group known as Marillion who couldn't get financial support from their record company for a U.S. tour. The fans on their list started a tour fund to bring the guys across the ocean. What they ended up doing was raising approximately $60,000 in small donations and those that donated $25 or more received a live cd recorded during the tour as a thanks from the band. I'm not suggesting exactly the same thing but possibly some variant of that could be offered to Happy as an adjunct to whatever support that Samson is able to come up with. Deepening the pockets, so to speak. If there is any interest in this novel idea, I'm willing to offer my services and a small donation in the hope that Happy gets all the exposure that she can stand. ;-) What do you think ? Grrrr. It had passed me by that Happy was paying for the tour herself. I hope Samson will be funding other aspects of the album's promotion, even if only in the form of an advance on royalties. Otherwise it's hard to see what Happy will have gained by signing with them. I guess I'm out of touch with how these things are done. In my defence, I would just say that if Samson are going to fall down anywhere, I'd rather they failed to maintain their web site than that they should drop the ball when it comes to getting radio exposure for Happy, getting the CDs into stores, or publicising the album's existence in the media. That said, I agree that Samson would do well to get their act together on the Web-front. This *is* the late 1990s, and the Web is now a significant place to do business and publicity. I think there's merit in Jill's idea of people writing to Samson to apply footwear to posterior. DATs can record up to 120 min, while MDs can only hold 74 min of stereo (128 min of mono, which, judging by your mic. purchase, is not adequate for your needs). From what I've read and heard, however, you probably should be comfortable with your choice... The sound quality is comparable to CD (MDs manage to achieve capacity similar to CD by encoding only those frequencies that are actually audible (i.e., not above 17 or 18 KHz (or thereabouts)), and probably by doing something with the encoding algorithm. Pretty ambitious, given that there's still nothing there. (Anyone notice that if you go to where the homepage should be, , you get perpetually bounced to a Shockwave page that doesn't exist?) Maybe I should have our sales guy see if we can take over this website. We've already got the Tommy Boy account. Anybody know anyone to contact at Samson or at Gold Circle Entertainment? I'm currently reading an excellent biography on the band XTC called "Chalkhills & Children" & it happens to have some interesting Mary Margaret O'Hara content in it. I'm a big fan of XTC, as well, & I was fascinated to discover that XTC's Andy Partridge was the person originally hired to produce this album. At the time, Virgin was helping Andy branch out into production & since he liked the demos, they thought he would be the perfect person to work with the Canadian singer's sparse, enigmatic songs. In November of 1984, MMO & band arrived in Britain for a week of rehearsals, prior to the recording sessions. Apparently things got off to a bad start because MMO herself was hardly to be seen. She spent hours locked away in her room every day with her sowing machine, which she had shipped over. Andy would only see her at dinner time when everyone dined together. MMO's boyfriend/manager Jody Colero was extremely protective of her & no-one, he insisted, including Andy, was permitted to disturb her during these all day sowing marathons. One of MMO's first requests was for a list of all the Catholic churches in the vicinity. (For those unaware of this, MMO is an extremely devout Catholic.) The only time MMO would venture out of her room during the day, was to visit one of these churches. During one of the dinner gatherings one evening, the conversation gravitated toward religion. When MMO asked Andy what religion he practiced, he told her that although he was brought up Anglican, he now considered himself an atheist. The following day, Andy was informed he'd been fired because MMO thought his "vibes weren't right". So that was the end of that relationship. An interesting thing resulted in all this though, because Andy & his engineer demanded payment & a compromise was reached with Virgin, where they allowed Andy & his bandmates to use settlement money to finance a "vanity" recording of their own. This recording ended up being a classic XTC psychadelic alter ego project called "The Dukes Of Stratosphere" album, that most fans of 60's psychadelia absolutely loved (& was the 1st XTC-related project to actually make any money!). I personally love MMO's album so it all apparently worked out for the best, but I thought MMO's ecto contingency would find this info kinda humorous & interesting. Have a great holiday weekend all! I too have loved all of his previous work with Split Enz, Crowded House, and the Finn Brothers. His new solo album, _Try Whistling This_, is just as engaging. The new songs are a little less linear and instantly appealing as his Crowded House compositions. But once you get your brain around them, they are just as wonderful as all of his previous work. Highly recommended and already in my top 10 for the year.
