Though of course, many of the pages are quite awful and don't really conform to any known HTML standards. In my defence, the Ecto pages were actually the first pages I ever put up, that long-ago summer of '94, and I had very little clue what I was doing. I designed them for NCSA Mosaic (Netscape didn't then exist) and had to do it on two networked machines - writing on one and testing on the other - because Mosaic crashed so frequently. The title page uses GIFs and not JPEGs, even though they'd compress better with JPEGs, simply because many of the early browsers couldn't view JPEGs at all. >I will soon be soliciting volunteers to help with certain sections of the >site, most notably the links section, which needs a lot of work and will >require regular ongoing maintenance. [...] Sigh... The Ecto pages, as with many pages online, eventually succumbed to general burnout. It's fairly straightforward to put up a load of stuff in a fit of enthusiasm, but it's very time-consuming to keep them updated. Ah well. Or, to steal another page from recent Nields history, she could do a raffle. One of the people on the Nields list came up with an idea to help raise money for their Jam For The Van by holding a raffle where the prize was getting to hear the song of your choice performed live at the Jam. Chances were sold for $1 apiece, and you could pick one song per chance, as many chances as you wanted to buy. Maybe Happy could do a raffle and sell chances to help defray the costs of a West Coast tour, and the four winners would get to choose which four songs from the backcatalog she performs on the tour. :) I'm only being half serious here, but hey, sometimes you gotta get creative. I'd throw in a few bucks to get the chance to hear her do "Poetic Justice" or "Murder" or "Possessed" or "Cohabitants" live again, or to hear "Oh The Drears", "Glory", "Out Like A Lamb", or "Ecto" live for the first time. Wouldn't you? :) Jerene implored: >So, please, Lucky Ones, buy lots of Happy Rhodes t-shirts and >toilet paper and anything else that is offered. Or, West Coast Ones could arrange with East Coast Ones to purchase paraphernalia for them, thus helping increase revenues from the Eastern part of the tour and increasing the chance for a Western part of the tour to happen. I have never spent much time with Mini Disc, but I know it uses digital compression to fit a lot of musical information onto a small disc. I don't know what the audible result is, but I suspect it is probably a lot like an MP3 audio file for the PC. I think Mini Disc can sound close to CD-quality to the average person, and certainly it is better than cassette in terms of noise and durability, but the quality isn't as good as CD or DAT, and certain music probably produces undesirable artifacts as is the case with MPEG files. What are you hoping to do with it Paul? Record live performances? If so, then one thing to determine is whether any of the portable MD recorders on the market have manual record level controls, or do they all have ALC (Automatic Level Control). The problem with ALC is that even if you have a great mic and digital medium, it causes the sound to become clipped, and you lose all the dynamics that create so much of the impact at the show. This is one of the problems with cassette walkmans too, although the quality loss on cassettes is compounded by poor frequency response and high hiss. The pros of Mini Disc, in my opinion, are: - - better quality than cassette - - direct track access, like CD - - durable media - - price, compared to DAT The cons: - - lossy quality; not as good as CD or DAT - - ALC recording on the portables? - - maximum of about 70 minutes recording time per disc - - few people seem to trade shows on MD compared to DAT - - lack of competition between manufacturers means rather high price and limited choices If you're looking for a machine to do high quality live recording, I think you would be happier in the long run if you spent the extra cash on DAT. That medium also has its drawbacks, and it is expensive to get set up, but I think it's worth it if you can afford it. If you're just looking for an alternative to cassettes for making mixed tapes and recordings off the radio, then MD might be the way to go at this point, providing you can get a unit with manual record level controls. Sony is putting a lot of effort into promoting this medium, and it looks to me like it should be around for a while as a modern competitor to cassettes, although it's still a niche market product right now. I've been using Minidisc equipment for about 8 months and have been delighted with the result. The convenience of size and re-recordability are phenomenal (but dangerous for an obsessive sampler-tape-maker like myself -- you can spend hours editing, deleting and re-ordering your sampler discs). The compression algorithms now in use produce recordings that are indistinguishable from the CDs I've recorded and I've been *very* happy with Minidisc recordings I've made in my home studio. Minidisc recorders also tend to require *much* less maintenance and care than DAT machines -- especially portables. A good starting point for investigating Minidisc is http://www.minidisc.org which also provides pointers to the Minidisc mailing list -- a great source for the kind of info you request. The BBC now uses Minidisc for a lot of on-air stuff (if my sources are correct) and Stereo Review recently ran a very positive review of (I think) a Denon MD recorder. The favorites of the concert-taping crowd are Sharp's 70X series and Sony's small recorders. I'd never seen Rose Polenzani live before, but I traded nights in order to engineer for her tonight (I don't usually do Wednesday nights) here at BRS. She's on right now. Is she always like this? I'm gonna lose count of the number of times I've fallen down laughing! This other woman, Summer Pierre, is apparently a friend of Rose's who lives in this area and doesn't tour, so they don't usually do shows together, but they're having a lot of fun with this one. When I was flipping the tapes, they broke into a spontaneous "flip tape, flip tape, everybody's gotta flip tape sometime..." song. Then a few minutes later they said, "we've got a caller!" and simulated this woman "Flora" who they interviewed about her love problems. Right now I'm listening to them simulate static, since they're theoretically off the air 'cause Flora came down to the studio to get them back for what they said about her on the air. And now they're interviewing the (invented) security guy they called to get rid of Flora. I find myself comparing them to moxy fruvous. It turns out, actually, that this was the *first* time they've done a show together, ever. But they loved it so much that I think it's quite likely to happen again.
