I'll ask again when my contact there gets back from touring with Emm on Thursday. Or I'll ask Emm on Saturday when I see her at the Yonge Street Festival in Toronto. If there's anyone here who can make it, she's playing a free show Saturday at 2:10pm on an outdoor stage at Bloor and Dundas, right in front of the big HMV at 333 Yonge if I'm not mistaken. The latest news on Emm is that she's just wrapped up a promotional tour and a video shoot for "Summerlong" in the California desert. She's also going to be opening for Bernard Butler (from Suede) on his upcoming solo tour of North America (August and September). The Sampson site makes no mention whatever of Happy. I think this is more indicative of their lack of interest in the Internet than any lack of interest in Happy. Ordering the new album from the site... now that would be neat! :-) Maybe they'll get some net-savvy staff on board in due course, but perhaps it's for the better that their energies are focussed on other priorities for now. [...] I think of *Lilith*-type music as more > mainstream overall.......*ectophilic* is more unusual, obscure, > often *dreamier* music......... On my web page, I defer to Neil's definition at: http://www.tela.bc.ca/ecto/ectophilia/alt.music.ecto.faq.html but the only definition I'd defend is that Ectophilic music is music that Ectophiles like. The more Ectophiles that (would) like an artist then the more Ectophilic they must therefore be. That said, it does seem that "Lilith" represents very much the commercialised, mainstream, major-label end of things. The end that probably appeals more to me than the more obscure, dreamier, ethereal stuff as it happens, but a very limited sub-set of "Ectophilic" in any case. Still, "lilith" is how some of the music we like is being brought to a wider audience, so I'd expect the name to stick as far as the mainstream media and their followers are concerned. Re: promotional bits and pieces for MWABT: ``There will be many surprises, including the participation of the well-known CD-Rom Adventure Game "Timelapse." The owners have combined with Samson Music for a cross-promotional campaign. This means that customers who buy the game will receive a "Happy-related" item...... this could mean a free CD-single. This hasn't been implemented yet, but will be in the next run of 10,000 copies of the CD-Rom game. Folks should look for the specially-marked box.'' I decided to look for a review of this, and happily it looks like a pretty good quality game for its genre ("Myst"-like, but better according to the gamesdomain reviewer; so I guess if that style of game appeals, this would be a good addition...) I also noticed that there's a superficial connection between the game's plot and the title of Happy's album... I figure that's partly why this deal happened :) I have to presume that this is all intended more to get people listening to Happy than to get Happy fans playing "Timelapse" :) but for those who are interested, here's what altavista and I came up with. I don't like hotels much, but at least they're predictable and don't expect anything in particular of you as far as socializing goes, and you have the option of being alone to recouperate or not as you wish. Jewel's participation in the movie is finished & things went extremely well. The film now goes into the editing & production phase with a an expected theatrical release expected in March of 99 & a Cannes Film Festival debut around that time. Everyone involved seems to be very pleased with Jewel's performance & she can now move on to what her fans have been VERY patiently waiting for--the new album sessions, which will begin in a few weeks. They still have every intention of having the album out in November to coincide with the holiday season. Joy Eden Harrison has begun working on her new album & has an incredible batch of new songs. I'm extremely excited about this project because Joy has decided to have Cindy Lee Berryhill produce the album. Anyone who knows me well, is well aware that CLB is one of my favorite musicians so I'm real happy to hear of this decision. One of CLB's major strengths is her skills at arranging & I can't wait to hear what she & Joy cook up together on this project. I know this is gonna be a major step forward for Joy & I anxiously await the results! Also, Elizabeth Hummel called from San Diego this morning and updated me on whats been going on with her. She recently had a great experience playing the local Lilith Fair date & recieved glowing reviews on her performance. Sarah M watched her set & was really taken by Elizabeth's dulcimer tunes. She even invited Elizabeth up on the big stage to join in on an allstar version of Marvin Gaye's "Whats Going On?" (One of my personal favorite songs :-) Elizabeth invites all San Diego area folks to join her at Java Joe's for her "Birthday Concert" this Saturday, July 11th at 9:00PM. Neil reported: > Erm. Funny you should mention my Web pages. Because my ISP deleted all my > files last week. So right now the tela and Ecto pages > aren't really up. Sorry. And Jeff revealed: >Ahh, yes, but a certain ectophile is in the midst of revitalizing >the ecto pages Sigh. Ectosynchronicity strikes again. I guess I'm making this announcement a wee bit prematurely, as I was going to wait until there was actually something available to look at, but we do what we gotta do. With the release of Happy's new album on the horizon and the prospect of many new fans coming into the ecto fold, there's a definite need to have an updated and comprehensive ecto resource on the Web. To this end, I have taken over the official ecto pages, and have moved them to smoe. The base URL is . Please note that some links may have inadvertently broken in the transfer; if you run into anything weird don't fret, things won't be this muddled for long. I have spent what spare time I have been able to find over the past couple months revamping the pages, while still keeping the basic look and feel exactly the same. I have fixed way outdated HTML, rearranged some things, and generally made the pages more up-to-date and easier to navigate with today's browsing technology. (It really is amazing how far things have come in 2 1/2 years!) But don't worry -- this site does not now, nor will it ever use frames!!! I wouldn't dream of subjecting anyone to the evil that is frames. :) Right now I'm bogged down in the lyrics section. Once that's done I think I'll have something fit for ectophilic consumption, though, so I've given myself a deadline (since that's the only way I ever get ANYTHING done - procrastinators-r-us!) to get something up by the end of this holiday weekend. What goes up this weekend won't be anywhere near done. For example, you may notice the absence of the Happy Rhodes Encyclopedia; I plan for this to be only temporary, but I haven't had time to even think about tackling the task of updating the HTML on that yet, and I don't want it to hold up the entire project. (Klaus, if you're listening - I haven't had a chance to e-mail you about this directly, but expect to hear from me on it soon. :) I will soon be soliciting volunteers to help with certain sections of the site, most notably the links section, which needs a lot of work and will require regular ongoing maintenance. I also want to get going on the Ecto Family Album again, for which I'll need pictures and links. If you're interested in helping out, please drop me a note privately and we'll talk. Last (but certainly NOT least), my heartfelt thanks to Neil K. Guy for spearheading the creation and maintenance of the original ecto pages at his tela.bc.ca site, and to everyone who contributed to it in the beginning. Be assured I will not be replacing credits in the acknowledgements section, only adding to them! The original ecto site was one of the first graphical pages on the Web, and was a great resource to this list. I hope it will prove to be a valuable resource again going forward. And of course, thanks to Jeff Wasilko for graciously providing the server space on smoe, and for running the spider that grabbed all the files off of Neil's site for me (even if it did insert really annoying extra gibberish stuff into every single tag on the site ;). +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Jul 1998 17:14:12 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: info and opinions on Minidiscs and mics please Paul: I can't tell you which minidisc player to buy; but what I can tell you is that I would myself choose not to use the minidisc media and technology. You see, one of the reasons why a minidisc can hold about the same amount of "music" as a compact disc is that, when the music is being recorded in the minidisc format, a "filtering" process takes places, by which, through heavy-duty mathematical analysis, the recording device "decides" which tones you would not be able to hear, for reasons such as masking by other, louder tones in the same frequency, and thus (the recording device) "removes" from the digital data being scribed onto the minidisc these "inaudible" pieces of music. With this filtering technology, and with some nifty data compression, one gets to store in a much smaller physical media about the same amount of data as fits on a compact disc. And, yes, the minidisc also introduces other "user-friendly" features, such as the album's title and the artist's name, which could be supported as well in the compact disc domain, but which simply weren't thought of when the CD technology was standardized. Now, sure, they have done all sorts of studies to "decisively demonstrate" that indeed there is no way in hell that you would miss those sounds that were taken out of the source when the minidisc material was being recorded. But, when your sphincter muscle is holding up at 8 psi (pounds per square inch) as mine is, you too would choose to go with the CD format, especially now that recordable compact discs are out in the mainstream. That's my highly-opinionated and deceivingly-technical two-hundreds of a dollar. :) - - Bill. *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 98/07/01, at 4:54 PM, Paul2k@aol.com wrote: >I know that there have been discussions of mics on this list before...i was >hoping that the same people with experience with microphones and also anyone >with an opinion on minidisc players could help me out and give me clues as to >what is good and what isn't with regards to products and technical jargon. > >you can reply in private or in the open...whatever you wish. Hi! Paul wondered: >I'm asking because in the order catalog for next week's releases, Emm is still >listed as a July 7th release...what's goin' on? Weird - we've had _Public_ for a couple weeks now, but I didn't realize woj got it out of a promo bin until just now. I've been meaning to post something about it here, but I haven't been able to adequately phrase what I'm trying to say. I guess I should just start typing and see what happens. After several listens to _Public_, which is my first introduction to Emm Gryner's music I have to say that I'm puzzled by the amount of enthusiastic press she's gotten here on ecto over the past several months. Maybe since she's mostly been mentioned in the same breathless raving posts as her compatriot Sarah Slean I was expecting something as engaging and promisingly wonderful as Sarah Slean, but instead what I'm hearing is decidedly above average, yet still quite generic alternarock. She's got a nice voice, but the songs don't strike me as anything overtly special, and I forget them almost before they're over. Help me -- what am I missing? (I figure I've *got* to be missing something, considering what I've been reading and who's been writing it.)
