Their Crossroads show used to be a fairly good place to turn for somewhat less-seen, ectofriendly stuff. I think it might still be on, but at like 3AM, far removed from its former primetime spot. and in one of the others, she writes: > If you like Vonda Shepard's voice and style of music, I highly recommend an > Australian singer/songwriter named Wendy Matthews. > (http://users.bart.nl/~jad/matthews.html) Picked up Lily a few months ago and the Vonda Shepard voice/style comparison is spot on. Judging solely from Lily, though, I don't know that the "singer/ songwriter" moniker is quite what it might imply as she has writing credits on only 2 of the 11 tracks (and co-writing credit on both at that). Which is not a judgement by any means - any Aussie who can sing "Face of Appalachia" so convincingly deserves kudos. ;) > BTW, does anyone else feel the need to play Musical Monopoly when it comes > to purchasing cds? You know, when you find an artist whose music you like, > you just feel like you have to buy *all* of their albums? And then you > *still* wish they would come out with more albums? Indeed, though personally, it wasn't a game I felt the need to play in this case (nor, not surprisingly I suppose, in Vonda Shepard's case either). It's enjoyable enough, but perhaps Lily wasn't the right starting point for me. Even more frustrating than finding someone, buying up the entire back catalog and eagerly awaiting more is to only stumble across a band only after they've ceased to be and the back catalog is out of print. 8( > Mourning the breakup of October Project.......*sigh* It probably goes without saying, but if you don't have it yet, get thee to the record store (or an on-line equivalent) and pick up Sloan Wainwright's self-titled release (on Waterbug - http://www.waterbug.com - order from there and they'll throw in your choice of some of the best folkish samplers around - Sloan, Cosy Sheridan, Rose Polenzani, Erin Corday, and many of their other artists (the latter two made for quite a house concert here last year but that's a whole 'nother subject and I'm already two levels deep in parenthesis) ). Sloan's voice is the best known cure for Mary Fahl withdrawl and the music isn't altogether dissimilar from OP, either. "Box of Rain" is instantly addictive and what gets the airplay locally (yes, _that_ "Box of Rain" - see, nothing against singers doing other peoples' material ;) ), Fortunately, you don't seem to share my inexplicable procrastination WRT/ mail order. As I never was able to find it locally, I had to wrest a copy out of the depths of a record store in a basement in Northampton, MA. Far more fun than mail order. ;) bob ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 23:44:27 -0400 From: "Jeffrey C. And some album artwork to set ya droolin... Thanks for the update, Sharon. 'Tis all very exciting! One of the tidbits on the terra incognito page sez, regarding the tour: >Happy’s set list will include every song from the new album, plus >four others from the back-catalog. It's pretty horrendous to think of trying to pick 4 tracks out of, what, 80 or so tracks between the 7 all-original albums and scores of songs on the compilation albums?! I can't even begin to try to list the 4 songs I would pick to hear Happy play live. Though I'm sure "Possessed" would be one of them, but then why waste one of my four on that, when I already have it on tape from the QE2/Philly shows in '92? Yikes. I just shouldn't even think about this anymore tonight. I'm asking because in the order catalog for next week's releases, Emm is still listed as a July 7th release...what's goin' on? Someone talk to Dave Einstein at Mercury and work it out :) _Original Leapyear_ is growing on me immeasurably...too bad i just sent my portable cd player in to get fixed...two weeks without a cd player in my car...what will i do :( in the Billboard article that talks about the Lilith/Starbucks connection, there is mention that other artists slated to do Starbucks appearances include Heather Nova and Emm Gryner, so look for them to show up on the east coast... I recently got my hands on a copy of this (Thanks Andrew), and have really been enjoying. The sad thing is, a friend in Germany asked me to look for discs by them, so I'll have to be giving it away soon. They've got a lush sound, somewhat progressive sounding, but no noodling! And cello's all over it, which is very good in my book. There are a number of instrumental songs, and the others feature a male lead singer. I haven't listened enough to say much more, but I definitely like it, I'd get more of theirs (or even this one!), and I'd love to see them live. I saw Sloan Wainwright and band at the 1996 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival with Sherlyn and Woj and Meth and Mike Curry and marveled at how they seemed to be the folkier October Project. I also got their album for free...somehow i won a drawing for a free package that included it... > Fortunately, you don't seem to share my inexplicable procrastination WRT/ > mail order. However, rather than gluttonous mail order of them all, I chose to search local music stores to see if I could find them. This strategy was like a planned slow immersion into exquisite musical pleasure. (It also cost more than mail order because, of course, I found more than Happy cds.) The anticipation of the new cd is getting more acute. I agree with Neile that it's almost too good to let myself believe. (Release date is always later, right?) But, what really sends my sweat glands into tremulous spurts, is the concept of a realio trulio Happy Rhodes concert on the left coast--one I could even attend. (Spank me for hoping so much.) According to the (beautiful) Terra Incognita website, the West Coast concert possibility can only materialize if enough revenue comes in from concert paraphernalia, presumably sold at East Coast and Mid Coast venues. So, please, Lucky Ones, buy lots of Happy Rhodes t-shirts and toilet paper and anything else that is offered. Categorize it as a tax-deductible donation to the charity of me getting to see/hear our heroine in person...... - --Jerene ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #210 **************************
