That plus the X-Files and Homicide made up my TGIF watching night. The occasional scheduling intereferences of shows like Due South, Under Suspicion, and Picket Fences made the VCR my best friend :) I believe that Brisco is still doing reruns on TNT Saturday mornings. If you have Bruce Campbell, you can't go wrong, no matter how bad the movie or show is (note the TV Movie "Tornado" and the Tom Arnold movie "McHale's Navy"). Bruce Campbell plus Sam Raimi are a team like John Woo and Chow Yun Fat. _Army of Darkness_ (aka Evil Dead 3 : the Medieval Dead) still rates as one of my favorite movies of all time (i'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion here about the "100 Greatest American Films" that was just announced recently). Bruce delivers one liners and contorts his face as well as jim carrey, but in a much more "everyman" and cynical way as compared to jim's alien and outlandish outbursts. He was supposed to be working on a series with Disney, but nothing's happened so far...he did have a role on Ellen at some point, playing her boss, but sadly he disappeared after awhile...he also had a two-part guest starring role on Homicide that showed his straight drama skills...and he's also in Fargo (i'm pretty sure that it's the part where the psycho murderer is watching some TV in the shack...Bruce is on the TV). That's enough Bruce worshipping for today. VR5 - the girl who played Sidney (she actually plays the cello in real life...appeared in Robert Altman's _Shortcuts_[ a movie i dislike] and _Fame_) reminded me of Darryl Hannah, both in looks and "acting"...*shudder*...as Paula Poundstone puts it "What is Darryl Hannah doing in a movie....she has got to be the worst piece of shit actress i have ever seen...she's painfully, wretchedly, horribly bad" Strange Luck - a pretty uneven show...sometimes they were spot on and sometimes they were way off...i think that they were running out of ways to make DB Sweeny's "luck" work for and against him by the end...I DO remember one episode where they played the Piano version of Possession, plus Live's Lightning Crashes, plus had a scene at a club with posters on the wall for Nettwerk bands and a Nettwerk poster... Sliders - another uneven show...but a little better than Strange Luck...John Rhys Davies was always fun to watch and mimick as the stodgy and stuffy Professor Arturo...nobody really liked him on the set...it's moved to the Sci- Fi channel and starts a whole new season in July...and Jerry O'Connell's brought along his younger brother to act as his older "long lost" brother on the show... and finally. Probably the show that i watch the most.....Talk Soup on E! with John Henson. Right up there with Space Ghost Coast to Coast and South Park as the most irreverent and random and hilarious shows on tv. Paul "here's our talk soup clip of the week!" Anyway, I just ordered and received all four of her full-length cds and am enjoying actually listening to them! I wish I'd known you were there and said hi! I always need Ecto-hugs to put a face to people I already feel I know. We did have a great time there, pulled out all our theatrical stops thinking "hey, ART and EDGE, ok, let's go all the way" but not very many bands that I saw, or dancers were doing anything arty except playing atonal stuff. Oh well, we are used to being the "company weirdos". Glad to hear someone really liked it from the list, I do like to go nuts but never want to pull the focus away from the music either and become a "personality", ya know? Your comment about Land of the Blind sounding like Dead CAn Dance if they weren't dead cracked me up very deeply! Next time come say hello please! It was nice to get mini-mobbed after, I guess some folks think weird is tasty, eh? Once again, thanks for the kind words and after that show, we are definitely coming back to Seattle soon! I am currently flying back and forth between the NW and SF recording and performing in both places, for those that care. On July 8th LAND OF THE BLIND plays a benefit in Eugene, Oregon (for any ectos in the area or friends there) PLEASE let them know because ALL MONIES go to the ECO-WARRIERS Earth First, Cascadia Forest Defenders and a micro-broadcasting station there, (pirate) Cascadia Free Radio. BLIND will release their new song CHURCH OF THE HOLY TREES (yes, it's true, sounds wimpy PC but actually kicks butah'), which is dedicated to Julia Butterfly, who has been sitting in a tree in Northern California since December! (for more on her go to ) ON July 11th we are at the Oregon Country Fair, at 11:30am on the Corral Stage, this is a huge in the woods hippie fun party music fest outside of Eugene. SF ECTOS; On July 9th I am sitting in with a wonderful hypnotic World Fusion Trance Band from SF called Azigza at Starry Plough in Berkeley, last band, 11:ish. Any and all Ectos please come up at any show and say hi and I will give you free tapes or discounted CDs or whatever I have to give. I LOVE THIS LIST, I feel I have support and friends all over the map! For a struggling artist in an eclectic music scene, that is a gift unlike anything else in life. When I heard that Bruce was on Ellen I tried watching a couple of episodes and was quite disappointed. It's seems Ellen actually managed to find writers that were able to make him totally unamusing, so the fact that he left was imo a good thing. > VR5 - the girl who played Sidney (she actually plays the cello in real The most notable thing about VR5 (imo) was the presence of the actor who now plays Giles, the Watcher, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I suspect that Genesis was the first band/artist I really started collecting [runs off for a quick count]. Oh dear. I seem to have 40 discs by genesis, members, or folks-who-played-in-live-bands. And that doesn't count the odd bits of vinyl and cassette I have kicking around too. Fortunately, that itch was scratched a while ago. ;-) > i remember long ago after hearing the immaculate collection (madonna) i ran > out and bought a couple of her old albums... I'm real mixed on Madonna; I love the new _Ray of Light_ and think that _Like a Prayer_ was phenomenal (and still listen to it fairly often), but never really cared enough to get any of her other albums. Strangely, in an obHappy, I put off ordering the 1st4 tapes for ~6 months because I thought that the compilation I had gotten through Vickie in 7/90 was a "best of" and wasn't sure it was worth sending off big gobs of cash to a strange company in upstate new york for *tapes*! It wasn't 'til I decided I was probably going to wear out the compilation I had that I decided to order the 1st4. All those wasted months! And when I finally mentioned this to Vickie in 3/91, she laughed and said, "No, I was just playing whatever struck my fancy [including almost all of side 2 of _ecto_, back when it *had* sides...]. Some of my favorite Happy songs aren't even on there." jeff np _Howandever_, Squonk Opera (a band named for a Genesis song, but not included in the 40 count above...) (Seems like "Lilith" is becoming the rough mainstream equivalent for "ecto"...) I'll second Meredith's comments on =Buffy=; if the show weren't so well-written I'd never watch the episodes so many times. np Heather Nova's =Siren=, which I'm still getting used to, I guess; Jeff Hanson's "pretty mainstream but definitely Heather" is pretty much on the mark. The last track is definitely the best. For New York area fans, Heather Nova will be at a newish venue called Shine (285 West Broadway at Canal) on July 14th. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 23:05:11 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: define *ectophilic* In a message dated 6/30/98 9:20:43 PM Eastern Daylight Time, dgk@genie.idt.net writes: << (Seems like "Lilith" is becoming the rough mainstream equivalent for "ecto"...) >> Oh, I hope not! I was just thinking about that as I was reading Billboard today.....and partly because when I went to Samson Music's website to get on their mailing list, they asked what my favorite kind of music is.......and I typed in *ectophilic*. Then I was thinking that Billboard, Borders, et al should have that as a category........ I think of *Lilith*-type music as more mainstream overall.......*ectophilic* is more unusual, obscure, often *dreamier* music.........
