A female performance artist--a big bull of a woman--did that song as a rant, as if she were yelling at someone. It quickly became clear that she was portraying a man informing a woman that she was having his baby, in a tone that unquestionably communicated "whether you like it or not!" High-larious. I thought of it a few years later when I saw Phranc do "I enjoy being a girl" as kind of a military march. - --charley n.p. Massive Attack: _Mezzanine_ n.r. Fascinating, but poorly advertized (or I should say that the media didn't pick up on it). Anyway, his performance Saturday was wonderful, but yesterday I managed to catch both Amy Denio and Land of the Blind live, and for free and not in a smoky club. What a delightful combination of factors. Amy Denio's set was outside. Some of you have heard of her or remember mentions of her on ecto. She's an edgey/experimentalish performer/musician/singer. She's been in this area a long time and has been a member of a lot of great groups from the punk/experimental Tone Dogs ("When Bush Was Head of the CIA" is their best known song) to the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet (which continues to perform though she's no longer part of their line up). She's a mult-instrumentalist, but for this set she focused on electric guitar and accordian. It was perfect--outside in the Seattle Center in the flag pavilion. It was hot and sunny but windy, and the flags were snapping and water from the nearby fountain frequently got carried far enough in the wind to sprinkle us. The music was great and energetic and I'm continually amazed at the growls and buzzes and soaring descants Amy Denio can swing her voice through. She played some edgy rock songs and some tango-y things on the accordian and it was quite a delightful set. Then I wandered through the visual art for a while, watched some kids break dancing (or is there another name for it now?) and finished my comments on a story for a writing workshop on a bench shaded by a huge tree, then went inside to see Land of the Blind. Michael and Michael were absolutely right about the band live. While I quite like _out of the chaos_, seeing them live (especially Cyoakha) was a revelation. They have so more energy that they're almost electric. I will not WILL NOT miss them when they come to town again if I can help it--even if I do have to dare one of those smoky clubs. Musically the band was crisp and tribal both. I'd like to say it's what Dead Can Dance would be like if they weren't Dead. Cyoakha's powerful voice is much more intense live than on the albums. I don't think there's a way recorded media can actually capture what the sound is like and of course how delightfully theatrical (though not overdone unless you automatically place belly dancing in the overdone category) their performance is. Too bad their set was only 45 minutes long! It was great to see a significant portion of their audience lined up afterwards to buy cds. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 09:54:40 -0700 (PDT) From: charley darbo Subject: Re: Seattle artsEdge Festival - ---Neile Graham wrote: > > > Well, if a friend hadn't been playing his first improvisational piano > performance here in Seattle I would never have known about this festival. . . . . . . . . . . > Amy Denio's set was outside. So I did a couple of teevee location shoot pilgrimages - Roslyn WA was where Northern Exposure was shot and the area around Snoqualmie was where Twin Peaks was shot. It's always funny to see the real place that a film or teevee show was shot in, because it's a reminder of how manipulative the whole process actually is. eg: Northern Exposure made the main street look way longer than it really is and never showed you the boring-looking retirement condos at one end (as far as I recall - I didn't see that many eps) and the many shots of Snoqualmie Falls (used in the opening sequence of Twin Peaks, through a murky brown filter) didn't show you the hydroelectric generating station at the top of the falls. Anyway, it was fun to see the locations. The Roslyn Cafe mural of a camel is there for real, the turn of the century red brick and woodframe false front buildings of Roslyn are quite charming, etc. Don't know how popular those places are as tourist destinations now that the shows have both been cancelled for some time. But the locals have attempted to cash in a little on tourist interest - Roslyn had a sign advertising Northern Exposure something or other and the diner used in Twin Peaks (minus the David Lynch-y buzzing neon sign) was advertising "Twin Peaks cherry pies." damocalifragilistix wrote re Due South: >>I always wished I could find a soundtrack, but have never run across one. >>Anyone know if it exists? > >there is indeed - in fact, laur has it. let me just have a look... > >it was released in 1996 on "unforscene music", which seems to be some sort >of subsiduary of nettwerk (neil?). anyway, you could probably find out >more at nettwerk's site (try to guess the url ;) or at the due south site - >you guessed it, www.duesouth.com. I wish I'd caught the name of it, but if your friends are interested enough to check club and theatre dates they'll catch her soon. Her stuff is pretty readily available in town here. A good web place to try might be www.cellophane.com, a local new & used disc store. A current search shows that they have both _Tongues_ and _Birthing Chair Blues_ used for $9.99 each. I highly recommend both these discs for those who like strange experimentalish stuff that is still recognizable as rock songs. Well, mostly. You might also want to check under Tone Dogs and Pale Nudes for her work. Her newest release is, I think, the Pale Nudes disc. There's no show I "never miss", or even close to that. And I don't have cable. However, there is one show I do occasionally make the effort to try to watch: Babylon 5. I end up seeing about 4 or 5 episodes a season, and then just before the next season starts, I catch up by watching in batches of 5 or 6 episodes at a time with friends. That's the only TV show I ever actually plan to watch. Though if it comes to a choice between watching B5 or doing something "live", such as going to a concert or party, I will always choose the live thing. I occasionally watch some other TV shows, if they happen to be on and being watched by a friend while I'm on the vicinity, and I have the time to spare to stay for a bit. Simpsons, X Files, Xena, Trek (except Voyager, yuck), etc. Best reason to watch Xena: all those oversaturated colors, especially the *GREEN*. np: Boukan Ginen - Rev an Nou, Xenophile / Green Linnett 1996 (A top Haitian rara/vodou band, stylistic spinoff of Boukman Eksperayns) -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- WBRS@brandeis.edu http://www.wbrs.org "[Spencer Tracy and Tom Hanks have] a disturbing aura of wholesomeness of which I do not approve." -- James Guimond [9 April 1995] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 13:00:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Bowman Subject: Re: POLL This will look similar to many of the lists, but my don't miss shows are: X-Files Millennium South Park Daria [the rare new episodes, anyway] Babylon 5 Buffy Animaniacs Pinky & the Brain Batman: The Animated Series Superman: The Animated Series Michael Bowman bvmi@odin.cc.pdx.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 13:39:44 -0700 From: "Larry S. One cool think is that they filmed the entire show in wide-screen, planning the shots so although the central part that shows on TV covered everything important, that the shots were composed for wide-screen views. So, when the tapes ever come out in letterbox format, we get to see the "real" Babylon 5 :) Kathy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 04:22:27 EDT From: Penta5@aol.com Subject: Re: Echoes Hello all, I've just returned to the list after 9 months absence due to losing it. It was a really fun, somewhat campy show which lasted exactly one season on Fox. I think I started watching it 'cuz I thought Bruce Campbell was kinda cute. (hmm, haven't we heard that theme in this thread recently? ;-) And, more importantly, it was a fun way to blow off steam when I started watching it during my first semester of grad school. But it was because I was home every friday night studying, and would watch _Briscoe County_ that I started leaving the tv on for the next hour and watching the first season of _The X-Files_. I may be one of the few people who got hooked on *that* through televisory inertia -- too lazy to change channels or turn off the tube -- as the lead-in and follow-up couldn't have been more different. It's been interesting to note just what Fox has tried to do with that 8:00 slot over the last 5 seasons. When _The X-Files_ took off, they dumped _Briscoe County_ and tried for more sci-fi stuff. Remember the abysmal _VR 5_ ("VR5 IS REAL!" yeah, whatever, sydney bloom...), _Sliders_ (which left, came back, got moved to wednesday, got canned, and has apparently reappeared yet again on cable?), _Strange Luck_ (probably the best of the lot, and also the quirkiest), and _The Visitor_. Of course, somewhere along the way, the shifted _The X-Files_ to Sunday night. And finally managed to get another Chris Carter series to take the old X-Files slot. Still, I guess they managed one mega-hit and one reasonable success for all their troubles... jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 22:26:11 -0500 (CDT) From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: POLL On Mon, 29 Jun 1998, Michael P. Hmm... or was the name Brisco County Jr. I know that's the character's name, but I'm fairly sure they cut off the Jr. for the show's title.
