Despite the fact that they had given only three stars (out of five) to several albums, and categorized Happy as "hard rock" (?!? I even checked their definition of the genre, which was something along the lines of Deep Purple/Bon Jovi/Guns N' Roses, as expected), they were pretty well informed. In the entry for "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" they had listed all the musicians, along with the instruments, and I noticed that KB plays a couple of instruments on the album that I don't know a thing about. I suppose a "jug" might be exactly what the name brings to mind, but what is a "diembe"? And is an "ebo" an alternate spelling for "e-bow", or something completely different? Anybody know? Juha n.p. Also thanks to sherlyn for providing me Wilson Phillips. My brain was not functioning that day. Another acquisition I forgot to mention was: The Nields, _'Mousse_. What can be said? It's The Nields! If you like The Nields, then this is a disc for you. Currently my favorites are the two live tracks ("Superhero Soup" and "Einstein's Daughter") but the whole disc should not be missed by a Nields fan. I just hope they come back this way. :-( With the way their last two shows turned out - not many showed, and it's hard getting anybody to promote them locally - I can understand why they're reluctant. For you East Coast fans who seem them frequently, please talk to Nerissa and tell her Matt said to come back to Omaha. Meth? Woj? No, not you sherlyn, you never seem to be around. :-) Other GREAT news: The local radio station I listen to has a listener/DJ get together every month. I finally had time last night to go, and besides talking to the wonderful DJ's that make up KIWR, I was introduced to "Cliff, Promotions at Samson". Heh heh... I have something coming to me that I can't wait to stick into my CD player. ;-) Plus, this radio statio, KIWR, The River, also has the *new* Happy song "Roy" (I think that's the name) *in it's rotation*!! Could Omaha be the first in the Nation? Wow, boggles the mind. Cliff told me that he met Happy, and of course I was jealous. :-) It seems most people at Samson have taken to her. Too cool. I asked about her playing here, and he was reluctant to give out any information. However, it was brought out that CPR (the David Crosby band) which is on Samson should be around here this fall, so there is hope. I'm liked too psyched! Dan Stark ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 01:48:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: corrs, prior, moxy I guess it's only fair to mention that the Washington Post last week had a glowing review of the Corrs show at the Birchmere. I'm still a bit baffled, as the band written about seems to bare no resemblance to the band that sounded like light, fluffy pop with only the faintest hint of Celtic soul to them. They claim that the Corrs are poised to be the next Cranberries. "Their music is deciedly accessible - folk rock with just enough traditional flavor to suggest the band's equal allegiances to its Irish cultural heritage and today's pop marketplace. ... the Corrs showed why they are the best-selling Irish band in the world next to U2, tempering a program chock-full of finely crafted tunes with rollicking jigs and reels." - --------- Tuesday night I saw Maddy Prior & Friends, with Kathryn Tickell at the Birchmere, with my parents. KT was friendly and warm, playing Northumbrian pipes and fiddle on a solo, all instrumental set. It was fun to see, but I felt like her discs might be a bit too samey sounding for me, though they do feature a band, which might help. Maddy Prior's set was intriguing, and a fairly mixed bag. I've never listened to much Steeleye Span, and mostly know Maddy's voice from the one Silly Sisters disc that I own. ON some tracks, she had a perfect blend of smooth and heart-rending to make for some powerful performances, but other times, everything seemed slightly off-kilter. I was a little surprised that the music was more experimental than I was expecting. (To invite my parents, I usually look for a pretty traditional sounding show.) She had a keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist (everything from Uillean pipes to tin whistle to e-bow'ed guitar) who varied between traditional backing and wild experimentation, as well as providing solid back-up singing. The show was heavy from her new disc (Flesh & Blood), which is half covers, and half a song cycle based on chakra's and colours that will take a while for me to absorb. (The first song in the cycle is a riddle whose answer is: The Leek.) The medley of Todd Rundgren's Hard Times flowing into a dramatic reworking of Sibelius' Finlandia was a brilliant high point, and while the show was erratic, there were many hight points like that. I was very proud to be able to recognize a Low D Whistle when it was brought out :) She played at least 2 Steeleye songs: The Blacksmith and The Saucy Sailor, and closed with Somewhere Along the Road, a beautiful ballad from the Silly Sister's album Once More To The Dance. - ----------------------------- Tonight I caught a fantastic live show by Moxy Fruvous. (Gee, isn't that a surprise.) They were in fine form at the Columbia Festival of the Arts, with the usual non-stop patter and endless ribbing and impromptu songs about the lovely planned community that is Columbia. They wrote a special song based on what they learned of it's history in the visitor's center. (Hey, it looks just like the models! It's a planned community designed and built by robots. The ducks in the pond are CIA agents in training. And my favorite - attempting to insight the crowd to riot and storm nearby restaurants making off with the cutlery. Probably no more than 10 people would get arrested, and all the rest of us would get some free cutlery.) So, I'm curious, what's their beef with Jewel? They kept making snide remarks about her, the first came while knocking the Queen of England (We're really tired of seeing that woman on our money. And no, we're not talking about Jewel! Don't get us started on Jewel!) And where does their name come from anyway?
