As far as I can tell, I'm the only person who came out and said they weren't particularly impressed with Sarah Polley's singing. I loved the movie, and thought she did a fine job, and I was quite pleased to hear a Jane song in the film. But I thought her version was flat and thin, and I don't remember a thing about the song in the closing credits. I did see the Nields and the Kennedys tonight though. Were you there Bob? I wish I'd known so I would have looked for you. I like the Kennedys, but they didn't seem to project all that well in an outdoor setting, and seemed pretty small on the big stage. They will have a new album coming out in a few months on Rounder Records. I forgot what it's called though. (Two words, one of which was Angel.) THe Nields had no problems electrifying the place immediately. Not much to say about their show. It was a Nields show. My friends were lukewarm to mildly positive about the kennedys, but everyone loved the Nields. The Kennedys joined them for Lovely Rita Meter Made, followed by an amazing version of Buffalo Springfields "What's Going On?" I got 3 Mousse's and one Bob. And I gave them a copy of the local book that they made a cameo in (That I posted here some months ago). They were pretty excited about that. I also gave them an extra copy of Jonathon Carroll's Bones of the Moon that I had laying around, since he's one of my favorite authors and I know they like to read. And indeed... Jess Klein on July 2nd isn't going to happen. Instead, we'll probably move Stone Child to that date (sounds interesting: keyboard, violin, guitar, 2 vocals) and have Jess Klein either on July 9th or later on in the year. Rose Polenzani on July 1st is now confirmed. Also, she's bringing another woman named Summer Pierre with her, and they're gonna do an in-the-round with each other. Anyone heard of Summer Pierre? It's not a film to be "enjoyed" in the accepted sense of the word. People who haven't seen it should be forewarned that it's a heavily depressing movie, that it's about children dying and parents grieving and ambulance chasing and sexual abuse and hatred and sadness and horror and loss and regret and confusion and spite and a thousand other things, not one of them (sorry, but you used the word) "enjoyable." There is no uplifting ending or easy answers or solved problems. The film weighs a ton, pressing down on the mind and soul. I must be the only person in the world who hated "The Sweet Hereafter" but, I hasten to add, not because it's depressing. (Hey, my favorite film is _Brazil_ which isn't exactly a day at the beach.) My reasons for hating it are very personal and so wouldn't apply to anyone else seeing the film. I just wanted to warn those who haven't seen it and decide to rent it bacause they heard that it's "enjoyable" that it's a dark and heavy film, and they should be in the right mindset for such an experience. Sorry Riphug, I just had to get that off my chest. It was an Australian (Shock Records) imprint of the American version (Bottom Line Records). I didn't buy it since I already have I got from Damon (HEY) in Canada (EH) a while back, but it was certainly a nice surprise. I think I asked here a while ago about Mare Winningham - I just found out that she's just released an album called "Lonesomers", which I'm going to have to get at some point... apparently it's very good. Does anybody out there happen to have this yet? I hadn't thought about Mare for awhile even though I've been meaning to hunt down some of her music ever since I saw the movie "Georgia". (Does anybody happen to know Mare's discography or anything?) But anyway, I saw her on "Mad About You" the other week, which reminded me that I'd been meaning to look into getting what music I could of hers, and now I find out she's just released an album. Someone's trying to tell me something... :) ... And, segueing vaguely on to the topic of another actress who's released an album, I picked up Kathleen Wilhiote (sp?)'s album "Pitch Like a Girl" while out today. I have no idea what it's going to be like but I remembered her from "ER" and the CD looks quite interesting. I found it filed under "country" in a store that files anything and everything under "country", so I guess we'll see. And then, after I was done CD-hunting, I went to my favourite bookstore, who happened to be having a sale, and picked up almost a dozen books for the price of about four. And, I must say, I'm SO HAPPY that Connie Willis' "Fire Watch" is finally back in print! (though I'm loathe to say >that of course, as I haven't seen every film she's in and I know some >smartass will say "why no - she sang "twinkle twinkle little star" in >episode 18 of Avonlea...) I know a lot of people commented favourably of Ooh! Ooh! Can I be the smartass? I can't invoke any Avonlea episodes because I've never seen the show; so my smartass remark is instead about this little known low-budget CBC Christmas special from 1991 called "Johann's Gift to Christmas" that she starred in. I'd completely forgotten about this show (even hearing her sing in the Sweet Hereafter failed to jog my tired old synapses) but Neil's comment made me recall it, because I could have sworn she sang in it, so I dragged out the old Christmas tapes (OK you can all quit smirking now). Her character, an angel, sings a (not that great) song in it, and I'm 95% sure it's her, although unfortunately no song performance credits are given. I have the Sweet Hereafter soundtrack but her voice (and her acting!) has developed quite a bit between 1991 and 1997, hence the 5% uncertainty. One thing that lends credence to this idea is that the man responsible for the score and the song(s) that Sarah sang in this Christmas show is none other than Mychael Danna, the same brilliant man responsible for the music in the Sweet Hereafter. Anyway I haven't seen much of her work either so I won't try to claim that this is the first time she sings on film. :-) One thing I'd like to point out for all you non-Canadian 'philes is that the other cover Sarah Polley performs in the Sweet Hereafter is the song "Courage" by the amazing Canadian band, The Tragically Hip. It's a great cover of a great song, very different from the original but just as good, imho. Anyway John, you should definitely pick up the soundtrack, it really evokes the feel of the film.
