It was everything I was led to believe it would be (Ecto comes through again). What a great concert. I had never been to The Wire. It is a -very- small place in a small town just outside of Harrisburg, PA. It was apparently the first floor of a small house. The layout is sort of L-shaped, with the performers in the angle. It looks like maximum capacity of this place must not be much over 100, and it was full by the end of the evening. The outer rim of the room is comfy chairs and couches, and the rest of us sat on the floor or folding chairs. Leading off was a local artist, Julia Schreiber, who I had not heard before either. She has a wonderful voice, and her stylings remined a little of Sarah McLachlan. Her set was almost all originals. Very nice voice. She was accompanied by a very young man on alto and tenor sax, and another guy playing some sort of African drum which I unfortunately don't know the name of (very well, I might add). After almost an hour of great music (play list below), she mentioned she had a CD for sale, that had been recorded right there at the Wire. After a few minutes, I decided go get one, and there she was, outside the Wire with a fistful of CD's selling them for $10 each. She was very nice to everyone, and signed my CD, and even gave me her e-mail address so I can write and ask about her new CD (due late in the summer). She's from nearby Harrisburg, and I don't know much exposure she's had. Haven't had a chance to listen to the CD yet, but since several of the songs she sang are on there, I'm confident I'll enjoy it. After a relatively short period, the Nields took the stage. The place was electrified immediately. It's always to see people really enjoying themselves on stage, and these people were -enjoying- themselves! They said all kinds of nice things about the Wire, mentioned the "Jam for the Van" (they're still accepting donations), and the FREE show at the Columbia Arts Festival tonight (!June 19! The Kennedys at 7, Nields at 9!; I'll be there if it doesn't rain). (That's right, this is a FREE show tonight!). They told a really funny story about going to Palo Alto, CA and sang the song that resulted (Check It Out). They played songs old and new, and explained that they currently are not -allowed- to put their old albums in stores (EMI has apparently given them permission to sell them directly (mail order/internet) and at shows). Also, the 'real' new album (coming out in the fall) is going to be "Play" (not "Tomorrowland" as stated in the newsletter). They jumped, they danced, and sang beautifully. Dave Chalfant was absolutely inspired in the bass (and inspiring; I went with a friend who plays bass in a band, and he was just amazed) A joyful experience. They were casually wonderful. On the first encore (Black Boys on Mopeds), they walked over to Julia Schreiber (who was sitting in the audience by this time) and apparently asked her right then and there to sing along; after about 20 seconds discussing who should sing which parts and which verses, then did an -incredible- version of the song. The three part harmony was dead-on; I literally had goose bumps. Highly recommended. It was one of the best movies I've seen in awhile. I especially enjoyed the actress who played Nicole, not the least because she also turned out to be a stunning singer. She sang a cover of Jane's One More Colour at the beginning, as her character. She also sang the song (also a cover) which played over the credits. I so loved these versions, her voice, that I'm going to purchase a copy of the soundtrack as soon as I find a copy. I've done a little searching on the web about Sarah Polley (the actress), but I was wondering if anyone had a little more information (or opinions) about her. Specifically, I'd like to know if she's done any other singing, any songwriting, and if she's expected to have her own album at some time. Thanks! She's very well known in Canada, primarily for her role in the family teevee series Road to Avonlea. Her first movie role was Terry Gilliam's Adventures of Baron von Munchausen, and she's appeared in two Atom Egoyan films - Exotica and the Sweet Hereafter. Far as I know the Sweet Hereafter was the first time we've heard her singing voice. (though I'm loathe to say that of course, as I haven't seen every film she's in and I know some smartass will say "why no - she sang "twinkle twinkle little star" in episode 18 of Avonlea...) I know a lot of people commented favourably of the songs she did in Sweet Hereafter, so who knows what might happen? - Neil K. - -- 49N 16' 123W 7' + nkg@nettwerk.com + (604) 654-2929 Technical Services Manager, Nettwerk Productions 1250 West 6th Ave. Vancouver, BC, Canada V6H 1A5 I'm just me; not a spokesperson for Nettwerk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 22:14:49 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Comma in Washington City Paper Joseph S.
