Suzie Higgie who used to sing for Falling Joys teamed up with Conway Savage, the keyboard player in The Bad Seeds for this little project which resulted in the album, "Soon Will Be Tomorrow". Falling Joys used to be pretty "crunchy" but this one is very, very laid-back and understated. The overall effect is much closer to The Bad Seeds than Falling Joys. In fact, this record bears no resemblance to Falling Joys at all, apart from that familiar, slightly nasal voice. It's Conway's piano and keyboards that stand out and create the mood and he also sings on a couple of tracks. To these ears he sounds just like Nick Cave, then again I'll admit that everyone connected to Bad Seeds sounds like Nick Cave to me :) It was the same thing with Mick Harvey' solo efforts... As for Suzie, well, I don't think there's much to be said about the range or power of her voice, but it certainly is distinct and it works quite well here. Another great late-night listening record... It might be hard to get outside of Australia, but I know there are a couple of Aussies on this list who might want to give it a listen. It's unlikely to get a huge promotion push or anything, yet I think it could be worth seeking out. It's out on Shock Records. - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Some people, you just wanna headbutt them in the hope of direct data download.... Ooh, I never thought I'd discuss Shania on ecto! :) TWiM is a fabulous album if you like 90s-style dancebeat country. The slow songs vary -- I find myself skipping over a few of them. But the CD is worth it for all the hits. Here in the US, this album spawned a slew of hit singles -- "Any Man of Mine", "(If You're Not in It For Love) I'm Outta Here" and about 4 others. Shania is the top-selling country female vocalist ever in the US. Would I recommend it as an ecto CD? No. As a fun, danceable country CD? Absolutely. If you take Shania for what she is -- a country-pop artist who creates fun, bubbly music -- she's great. Don't expect Mary Chapin Carpenter; expect country music's equivalent of Bananarama. ==> Valerie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jun 1998 10:53:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Steve VanDevender Subject: Re: ecto-digest V4 #187 dave writes: > Thanx to all the people hat thought it was about the Corrs for not > getting it.. > Thanx to all the people who responded privately that did get it.. > I'm off to join that second group now by shutting up and letting the > status quo have their little forum back.. don't even bother > responding... just stick a fork in me, I'm done. There is no Ecto Cabal, Dave. Everyone here seems to be very supportive of both diversity of opinion and freedom of expression. However the band is keen on putting a new album out. Since there hasn't been any success trying to get a record company to pay for new studio recordings, another option is now being considered. A substantial amount of material was recorded on the recent Scandinavian tour. These recordings cover old as well as previously unreleased material and the sound quality is very good. We are looking at the possibility of releasing a selection of the Scandinavian recordings as a live album and what we need to know is this: What do you, the fans think about it? Would you be interested in buying such an album? You can make it possible if there is enough interest. If you think you would be interested in buying a new live album with Miranda Sex Garden featuring a mixture of new and old material please get in touch. The instrumentation is piano (dana and karen taking turns playing, and sometimes both playing the same piano at the same time), guitar, and someone alternating between bass and percussion. Last Friday, Sara Bell from Dish sat in on banjo and guitar. They don't do a lot of "stage patter", but they really put a lot of feeling into the songs that they sing. I know they're doing shows out of town, but I don't think they're on an official tour or anything. For those in or can get to North Carolina, they're playing this Friday at The Cave in Chapel Hill. After several difficult years in London, Coughlan returned to Ireland in 1974, where an introduction to Dutch musician Erik Visser began her singing career. After winning a talent contest in a Gal way pub, word of mouth brought a couple of Television appearances and in 1985 Coughlan recorded her debut album, "Tired and Emotional" which became a major hit in Ireland. Seven more records followed and in the years to come, she became a cult favorite throughout much of Europe. "After the Fall" her latest, represented her U.S. debut, and garnered a devoted following for Coghlan in America. <<<< The titles of the two discs mentioned seemed appropriate on hearing her sing. Her voice gives the impression she’s a world-weary wanderer at the end of a rough road. Kind of torchy, kind of blue, kind of nice. Listening to her made you think of a smoky dim lit nightclub in the seedy side of town. Brecht and Weill tunes would fit her nicely. As they were opening up the gates Saturday morning the sky opened up as well, twenty minutes and two inches of rain later we were ankle deep in mud. Being of Irish descent I feel confident that nobody will be offended, and if they are, too bad, putting six inches of mud and thousands of drunken Irishmen in the same place is an ugly business. Warming up the rant mode. I was flabbergasted at the complete and utter lack of engineering skills displayed by the sound people (On-Time Sound.) They could have set the gains to unity, everything flat, turned off the effects, walked away and had a better result. They couldn’t even get a CD to sound decent ! A frekin no-brainer. Running with next to no sound check I can see the early part of a first song being a bit dicey, but hey. This just wasn’t in the Village Voice tent, things on the main stage were no better. These were supposed to be professionals. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment and a crew without a clue. Capercaille’s Manus Lunny wasted his time playing the Bouzouki, nobody heard it. The soundguy’s cure for feedback on the Uilean pipes was cut it from the mix. Oh, and we’ll set up a mike for your Bodhran but we ain’t gonna turn it on. Yikes ! Joe Ely’s guest guitarist, who wailed ferociously, walked off in disgust two thirds the way through the set. I’m sorry I didn’t catch his name, he was a master of the Tommy Tedesco order. Whether or not Susan McKeown’s repeated requests for more Bodhran in the monitors was heeded I don’t know, there was no Bodhran in the mains. A ferocious lineup of talent, sabotaged by incompetence. I had to walk away from Mary Black’s set, it was too painful to be witness to such sonic butchery. I know after this rant you’ll all think I joke when I say the Corrs were one of the few bands who sounded halfway decent. I kid you not. Another thing I couldn’t make it through was the Indigo Girls. How tough could that have been, two vocals, two guitars. I think with them it had a lot to do with their performance though, I resorted to Black 47 who were closing the show in the Nyah tent at the same time and had the crowd jumpin big time with a Bob Marley tune. Before the Indigo Girls, Tracy O’Chapman (so dubbed by her bandmates, riding her for signing to a Guinness gig) kicked it up and was big fun to hear. Got to meet Frances Black at the HMV tent after her performance (where I finally located a copy of Mary Margaret O’Hara’s "Miss America") and she proved to be a very warm and graceful person. I found her to be substantially more attractive than photos of her would suggest. Please forgive the superficial observation. Unannounced schedule changes caused me to miss Dar on the main stage (she was supposed to be in the Village Voice Tent). Also was sorry to miss out on Natalie McMaster and Altan So much music, so little time. Nancy Griffith and Eileen Ivers both rocked, hope they come this way again soon. I must be gettin old, big outdoor things, even with such a line up, well, give me Fez or the Bottom Line any time. Well nuff ranting. I’ll stop tuggin on your sleeve for now. Later, John P.S. to Carolyn: It was great to put a face on another Ecto name. Let me know when you’re back in the apple. ********************************************************************************************** Paradise Sound The Sound Choice For Choice Sound ParadiseSound@juno.com ----- 718-850-2300 http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/triadmedia/sound.htm _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Except that as good as Mousse is, "Play" (current title of their _real_ release due this fall complete with national distribution), from the looks of it's tracklist, will be even better. In lieu of a concert report (which will probably take me a couple of days to put together and having just gotten back 3.5 hours ago, isn't even started), here's why New England is 15 pounds lighter now than it was last Friday, and why my luggage was curiously 15 pounds heavier than it was when I started... Send a short e-mail with a few lines about what you think and > remember to state where in the world you are! Yes, I'd very much like them to release this; enough to write and tell them so. But who should we send messages to? FOREVER BURNING , is that right? > What did they play, old or newer stuff (i.e. middle age or goth)? Somebody will surely correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that after their debut CD they left the madrigal phase of their career behind. So I'd expect the material from their recent tours to be more alike the last 2 records, ie. goth if that's what we want to call it... > n.p.: Heather Nova _Siren_ (first listen, no opinion yet, it seems to sound a > lot like Oyster) I also only played it once so far and though I love Heather Nova I was somewhat disappointed... It did sound a lot like Oyster. Problem is, that happens to be my least favourite of her records. I just keep hoping for something either more subdued or more rough - just something that would sound somehow less mainstream and radio-friendly. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #189 **************************
