I confused the title with that of a video compilation I also have, and ended up with a conflation of the two. The Fripp track is what makes this album for me. I'm not a great fan of compilations at the best of times, and the material on this one did not encourage me to extend my collection of Blondie CDs beyond "Parallel Lines" and "Eat to the Beat" which I already had. Good discography in the liner notes, though, and not a bad survey of the band's career from shambolic punk beginnings to directionless soft-rock demise. It's still in the player, just because I love the final track *SO* much! Hundreds of people subscribe to this list and you've been here long enough to know that tastes vary *widely*. I love your posts, but I shudder when you're in a bad mood and take it out on the whole list. It's not fair, and you know it, right? Hey, if it makes you feel any better, I *like* Lisa Loeb (I don't guess you're going to stop liking her now, are you?). As far as the others go, I'm (sorry folks, sorry) burned out on Sarah, I've only heard a couple of songs by Ani (seemed ok), and I don't have any Dar albums, but I did enjoy her live show. I personally do think that Katell is beyond wonderful though, both as a singersongwritermusician, and as a human being (she's a really, really, really nice person). So yeah, the word "crap" stings because I don't think she deserves it. But you don't like her. That's fine. I didn't like the first Corrs album. That's fine too. Can we maybe agree to disagree? I'd like to see all of us quit with the personal attacks on each other's artists (tsks at charley and dave), without sacrificing being able to state our own tastes in music. And maybe you could modify your generalization about ecto recommendations. After all, many people here do love Happy Rhodes. Does that mean you don't like her? Years ago, when I was a teenager, I used to have an album that had a tune that I absolutely loved. This tune had all sorts of very fat analog synth sounds, like the kind that only a Mini Moog could make, and all sorts of liquid organ sounds, like the kind that only a wooden-case Hammond B3 could make. It also had a pretty good rhythm section, and the lead voice was by an african-american singer. The album cover was illustrated, very colorfully illustrated in fact. Now, by going from memory, I used to think that this album was titled "The Wars of The Gods", and I used to think that the album was by someone named "Billy Paul". BUT, many searches at CD store on-line catalogs have yielded nothing, not a thing, no trace of a such a song or album by such an artist. Does any one have the vaguest idea of what I am referring to? There are no rules. Ecto is a group of individuals, not a group mind. There's no cabal deciding things behind anyone's back, particularly who can and cannot be criticized. Sometimes when one of us criticizes a band, we hit a nerve, as Charley and I with you and The Corrs. I hope people will defend bands and groups they like! I also would rather people wouldn't say things about throwing things at artists. Lisa Loeb doesn't do much for me, but I still don't think it's cool to say things like that. I'm sorry we got up your nose with our Corrs comments. But why don't you tell us what you like about them? Opinions about musical taste aren't personal, or at least they shouldn't be stated in a personal way--but there aren't any enforcers whether the group is an ecto favourite or not. I didn't feel one way or another about Katell Keineg until this most recent album, which I played to death when I got it and still would rate fairly positively but it's not going to be my favourite of the decade or anything. "What Do Pretty Girls Do?" is the name of a song off of Kite... I've seen her live, and wasn't that impressed. I hate going to a concert and hearing the artist sing the songs exactly as they sound on the record, and I'd put Kirsty into that category. ==> Valerie *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 6/9/98, at 11:49 PM, Neal Copperman wrote: >On Tue, 9 Jun 1998, Dragon Lady wrote: > >> Ooohhh...June 16 is when a new Kirsty MacColl album called "What Do Pretty >> Girls Do?" is gonna be out on Cleopatra, according to Music Boulevard. >> Does that woman ever tour? On June 28th Jess Klein, Rose Polenzani, and Joel Cage will be playing the Snyder house in Boston. For those of you that haven't heard of these wonderful artists here is a (somewhat)brief description of each artist. "Wonderful...Go, go, go!" -- Dar Williams "When I heard her I thought Oh *@!"...She's really great." -- Carol Noonan "She's the one with that voice" -- Club Passim, Cambridge, MA Jess Klein is one of the rising stars on the Boston music scene. Her style could be described as words in the style of Joni Mitchell, a singing style that can mirror Patty Griffin, a voice that matches Rosalie Sorrels, and a personality reminiscent of Tracy Chapman. Jess is releasing her first complete cd on June 19th at a cd release at Passim in Cambridge, MA. This is the same club that helped to launch the careers of Dar Williams, Ellis Paul, Shawn Colvin, Tracy Chapman, Joan Baez, and many others. Jess has been nominated for numerous Boston area awards and is on the brink of a career that is about to take off. She has opened for the likes of Dar Williams, Carol Noonan Band, Martin Sexton, Disappear Fear, Diane Ziegler, Jabbering Trout, Cosy Sheridan, The Nields, Jim's Big Ego, Kevin So, and Moxy Fruvous. Make sure to catch her in small venues while you still can. Rose is a Chicago based singer-songwriter. She has a very unique style that is hard to describe. She has been compared to Tori Amos, and Leonard Cohen. She has an amazing way with words that scream to be heard even though the voice reciting them is close to a whisper. Some of may have heard of Rose through Lilith Fair. Rose won the Chicago Lilith Fair Acoustic Talent Search and she will be playing the Village stage in Chicago. I just have to add that I think Chicago is the Lilith to be at this year with a line-up including Des'ree, Liz Phair, Bonnie Rait, Natalie Merchant, Sarah McLachlan, Catie Curtis, Diana King, Victoria Williams and, Rose Polenzani how can you go wrong. Rose has also been added to the Newport Folk Festival, and the Traveling Newport Folk Festival in Chicago. Rose is an artist on the rise so catch her now. Also playing will be boston rocker/ folkie Joel Cage. Joel is a veteran of the Boston music scene. His music has taken him all over the world including an international tour as part of Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes. Joel has now turned his focus closer to Boston but is continuing to walk the line between folk and rock. He is one of the few performers I know who could open for Tara Maclean, Dar Williams, Bruce Springsteen, or Metallica. In 1996 Joel wa nominated for a Boston Music Award for Best New Contemporary Folk Artist. Then in 1997 he won first prize in The USA Songwriter's Contest for his composition "From The Farthest Reaches." Also in 1997 Joel played a tear the roof down show at the Kendall Cafe following one of Tara MacLean's amazing shows(he even had Stacey screaming). And probably Joel's biggest honor to date. A member of NARAS (the association that is in charge of the GRAMMYS) submitted From The Farthest Reaches and Last Hard Road [the CD] in the preliminary nominational round for the 1997 Grammy Awards! Joel just returned from the Kerville Folk Festival in Kerville, TX where he was competing for the title of a "Kerrville New Folk Winner". Joel is someone that has seen what there is and you can hear it in his songs. So come out and hear a wonderful musician. Here is the long and the short of it. What: The Longfellow St. Concert Series When: Sunday June 28th Time: 4 PM Where: 39 Longfellow St. Boston MA Who: Jess Klein, Rose Polenzani, and Joel Cage. Who: You and any friends interested in hearing wonderful music. Cost: $10 which will go directly to the performers. RSVP: Please mail with RSVP or any questions Bring chairs and blankets. This show will be outdoors unless the weather turns bad. We have a nice cozy yard that feels like a small folk club without the ceiling. We are even building a stage for this concert and those during the rest of the summer. So come out, have fun, sit in the sun, and hear wonderful music. Feel free to bring any snacks you would like to share. I'm sure we will have Lemonade, Iced Tea, other beverages, and some muchies but we could always use more. Bring your friends, bring your co-workers, bring your family. What could be more fun than a summer afternoon in Boston, with great people, and great music. Hope you can make it. It was my impression, perhaps wrong, that you did cut down ecto, and Katell, out of spite. I read all your posts. I know your tastes, and imagine it must hurt when you see Lisa bopped. Why don't you defend her against those (few) who cut her down for the sake of those lurkers who might really like Lisa, but don't know her, or only know her from "Stay." She deserves it! I guess I just don't get this driving away potential fans of an artist because of what some people say. It only hurts the artist, not the fan. And yes, the exact same thing goes for Katell fans who put down Lisa Loeb. They're sure not doing Katell (or whoever their goddesses are) any favors. I don't know, if it was me, I'd kill 'em with kindness, just because, as Charley mentioned, I'd rather be friendly toward any *potential* fan of a favorite of mine, than drive them away forever because of attitude. In other words, there might well be Katell fans who would also like Lisa. She's very different, but that's the joy of having diverse tastes. There might be Lisa fans who would enjoy Katell. Few Lisa fans who have a loyal bone in their body will try Katell if they hear, from a *Katell* fan, that Lisa Loeb sucks rocks. Fuck Katell, and fuck her fans, that's what I'd think if I heard that. (I'm just making a point, Katell fans, I love Katell. It could be any fan of any artist.) I,m wary about sounding as if I'm telling anyone what they should and should not post, but I'll choose two other artists to illustrate what I'm trying to say. A long time ago, when rec.music.misc was still something to write home about, there was a buzz about this obscrure artist from Canada named Sarah McLachlan. I don't remember for sure, but this was probably still in the "Solace" days. Sarah fans were behind the buzz, of course, and it was interesting. In the middle of all this, a fella with a very big chip on his shoulder because McLachlan was getting all the attention, pouted about how *THAT* "Sarah" sucked, and if people wanted to know who the *REALLY GOOD* "Sarah" was, they should take a listen to Saint Etienne, and hear Sarah Cracknell, the only Sarah who had talent and who really mattered. Something like that. I couldn't believe it. I posted a big sigh, and tried to explain to him that he'd just lost *his* Sarah a bunch of potential fans, since Sarah McLachlan fans would be very likely to *like* Saint Etienne. However, because of him, those McLachlan fans reading his tirade would associate Saint Etienne with *him*, and what he said about McLachlan, and would stay as far away from SE as humanly possible. I imagine he thought I was telling him what and how to post, when my point was simply that, if he could have set aside his dislike of McLachlan, and took honest stock of the similarities, perhaps he could have posted something along the lines of "hey, there's this wonderful band I know, and the lead singer is just fantastic...her name is Sarah too...i can't guarantee, but it's possible that if you like Sarah McLachlan, you'll like Saint Etienne..." blah blah and get people interested in SE, rather than push a ripe audience of potential fans away. I just cringe cringe cringe when I see a fan build up their artist by putting another artist down. I see it ALL THE TIME when it comes to Kate Bush and Tori Amos. Kate and Tori fans who play this stupid game are just insane. Long, long ago, all the Tori bashing in the Kate newsgroup/mailing list made me want to stop posting about Happy there. Even if all the original Ectophiles came from there, I don't want to talk about her anymore in that forum. There's just too many Tori bashers who will, no doubt, turn their fangs on Happy should she, god forbid, get any sort of nationwide recognition. I'm steeling myself for the day when I'll have to wade in and defend her yet again ("yet again" referring to the original "Happy wars" that caused Ecto to be born), and god help protect *from me* the wayward Happy fan who (you know it's gonna happen) pops in there, sees the Happy-bashing and, in a fit of misplaced loyalty, says something stupid like "Kate sucks, Happy's better" because they will surely get sizzled by me. Not for their opinion, but because they will have just driven away a whole boatload of potential Happy fans. Not the Tori/Happy bashers, to heck with them. I mean the slew of lurkers who will recoil with horror and silently, or vocally, hold a grude against Happy because their idol has been defiled by a Happy Rhodes fan. Oh, it's happened to Tori because of Kate Bush fans, it's happened to Kate because of Tori Amos fans, and it's predictable that it will happen to Happy too. (And I feel as protective towards Kate, if she loses some potential fans because of "she's just a poseur, Kate wannabe" Happy-bashing Kate fans.) Well, this is getting too convoluted even for me, and I don't know if I'm making any sense, so I'll go on... >What really gets me though, is that I once made the comment 'Missy >Elliot, oh please...' and heard for three or four days what a terrible >person I was to say something negative, and how I was intimidating >people and discouraging them from posting to the list.. When did this happen? How many people did this? It must've been during the months when my computer was down, because I don't remember it. If I'd seen it, and if no one else had come to your defense, I would have tried. Anyone on *this* list who accuses anyone else of "intimidating people and discouraging them from posting to the list" just doesn't understand what Ecto is all about, that's my take on it. Ecto *is* all about opinions being shared, debated (maybe even hotly at times), but not flamed, and that sounds like a flame to me. Intimidation and discouraging posting has never, ever been tolerated on this list. If someone really likes Missy Elliot, they should post what it is about her that they like, rather than get on your back about not liking her. (And a few constructive reasons why you don't like Missy, or Katell, rather than saying oh please and crap, might do some good too.) And, oh, you're not a terrible person. Anyone who would imply that, just because you stated an opinion, however abrupt, really should get a grip. > then a week >later someone suggested throwing cans of food at Lisa Loeb and not a >peep out of anyone... I've seen several remarks like that about Lisa >since, none of which got any response.. I'm sorry that that happened. It was terribly rude of the people who made such remarks, and I wish she had been defended by you and others. I wish I'd done it myself, but I'm not familiar enough with Lisa to do an in-depth defense. I just like her and think she's sweet. No matter what anyone thinks of the music, she doesn't deserve being bashed like that. For this list, it's way over-the-line rude. >so when I saw several people 2 people. >puttin' the boot to the Coors with no one seeming to care I figured I'd >test the waters again.. Whatever, but you "tested the waters" with a very confrontational post rather than sincerely talking about what you did like about them and giving another point of view for people to think about. Forgive me, but you did nothing to help the Corrs gain new fans, and if you like them, help them. Obviously you hear something that Charley, Neile and I didn't, but we're not the Golden Ears of Ecto by any means. We only have our own tastes and there's no "right or wrong" to it. Also, any one of us can change our minds if the circumstances are aligned. Speaking for my own self, I've grown to love artists I started out hating (I've eaten some major crow on more than a few artists, Tori Amos among them), or loved a 2nd album when I really disliked/didn't much care for the first. (Zoe, to be topical, is a good example of that.) Nothing is set in stone. Tastes and opinions about music can and do change. Or not. It just all depends. >with the expected results.. at least you're all >consistent. Who's "you're all"? 2-3 people? Out of (how many Jeff?) on this list? >So the rule is, no berating of other artists, unless it's >someone besides one of the 'ecto' favorites, then they're fair game? That is so not fair, and I do believe you know it. Just because someone else is rude enough to "berate" an artist you like does *not* mean that their opinion reflects the views of the entire list, and it also doesn't mean that you have to stoop to their level and use artists as a verbal weapon too, and it sure doesn't mean that you can't give a fresh opinion/new perspective about that artist and perhaps gain them some new fans. Besides, to prove you wrong, not one person has jumped on my "burned out on Sarah" remark, and she's surely considered an ecto favorite.
