I am soon ordering my second and third Happy discs from Kevin/AuralG. One disc will be _The Keep_, but I am having a hard time choosing the other disc (not having had the benefit of sampling any of them). I already own _War Paint_, and soon will have _The Keep_. What would you say the next disc should be? (I think Kevin may be out of _Rhodes II_ and _ecto_). Yes, I did browse through The Guide on Happy, but could not tip the scales either way. My other idea was to just let Kevin pick a disc for me... Many thanks, - - An unrested Bill. np: 10,000 Maniacs: In My Tribe (been a while! and still sounds good). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 13:43:02 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Re: hoping to be Happy In a message dated 6/3/98 1:12:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time, bill@wagill.com writes: << I already own _War Paint_, and soon will have _The Keep_. If you want to hear Happy sounding rather different (but just as awe- inspriring) I'd say to go for Rearmament. On balance, I'd recommend the latter as I suspect Sampson might be more likely to retain "Equipoise" in the catalogue than the pre-"Warpaint" albums. (no, I dont' know the address :-) Second: for those looking to hear Susan at the Fleadh on 13th June, she is scheduled (at the moment ... Irish time and festival time always subject to change) for the Village Voice Stage from 2:40 to 3:20 p.m. Third: the St. Ann's Benefit. "general admission" tickets are $40 for the balcony & sides of the main floor. Reserved seating on the main floor is available for $75, rows 11 & back I believe. then there's the super special $250 tix which include transportation to a post show thing with the artists. Doors open between 6 & 6:30 (most relevant for general admission ticket holders). they'll take orders over the phone VISA/MC/AmEX. this latter message comes to you from my memory of what I was told on the phone yesterday ... while I was busy being distracted by her telling me how much $ of each ticket was tax deductible contribution (therefore much less reliable than the previous two pieces of information)). Just my opinion, but it doesn't look to me like Nat solo is ever going to be as good as Nat with XKM. I must say I don't care for the packaging, I'd much rather have a jewel case than one of these cardboard sleeves... but then I've got a bunch of jewel cases I bought at the computer store.. I'll stick it in one of those.. so much for attempts to be ecologically sound. Maria McKee fans may note the picture of Natalie in circus costume and song title 'Life is Sweet'.. just a coincidence I'm sure... Also picked up the new self titled release by Jaci Velasquez, which I think is fabulous, a couple clips from her first cd are on my webpage at http;//magpage.com/~sspan/ And I got a Lisa Loeb single.. already have the songs on it, but it's Lisa, gotta have it.. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 18:40:29 EDT From: JavaHo@aol.com Subject: Re: hoping to be Happy Steve suggests: << If you want something similar to "Warpaint" I'd suggest "Equipoise". >> I would have to agree. Or possibly RhodeSongs, which is a very nice sampler. I'm not sure I agree with Jill's "trust me, you'll love it" vote for BtC (sorry Jill). This seems to be the most controversial, i.e. love it or...well...not love it, release. I'm still trying to warm to it, myself. You may well love it as many do, but this is a hard one to predict. Or you could get 'em all...:) Happy listening...Java ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 07:41:05 PDT From: "Mononoke Hime" Subject: My Veda Hille review up at Consummable! Hey all...I'm writing this from my nonsubbed work addy, so I'm hoping this will go to the listowner, who will then forward it along to the list, instead of getting bounced. (You're probably wondering why I didn't just wait til I got home. The answer is that I was just too excited and couldn't hold it in that long!) Anyway. Consummable has included my first review for them, one which many Ecto subscribers will find of interest. As the subject header suggests, it's a review of the American reissue of Veda Hille's _Spine_, which you can access at: http://www.westnet.com/consummable/1998/06.02/revveda.html Die-hard Veda fans should be warned that this is not an entirely positive review. Those reading my posts about Ms Hille know that my feelings about the album are somewhat ambivalent, though there's no denying her abundant talent and musical ability. I don't have all good things to say about _Spine_, but I hope the fact that I couched my gripes about the album with good humour and constructivity won't make them hate me. (I'm also kind of surprised that the first review they chose to run was something I dashed off a few days ago, as opposed to the Push Kings review I submitted a week prior, but I'm not going to complain. The editors left the review pretty much intact and spelled my name right, so all is good with the world.) - --Chelsea ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 16:41:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Greg Jumper Subject: Imogen Heap A local radio station played a cut from Imogen Heap's forthcoming album in their "artist spotlight" segment last night. Once again, a new artist was compared to the likes of Kate Bush and Tori Amos during the introduction to the song. I tend to roll my eyes at these comparisons now, given how many times I've seen such names dropped in artist blurbs at listening stations and the like over the last couple of years; however, based on the one song, Imogen might actually merit being grouped with these artists. The song's opening fit Imogen's classical piano training (and Kate's and Tori's styles); although her voice is nothing like Kate's, the rest of the song's exotic/eclectic production and vocal delivery reminded me of Kate's music. Needless to say, I'm really anticipating the album's release, supposedly on June 16th (although it's been delayed at least once already...). The same time I got the Mimi Goese disc. The Imogen Heap has been the one staying in the player. I'm not too sure what to say about it except I like it but I don't know if I will LOVE it. The Mimi Goese I might grow to like but it's not melodic at all, and not like Hugo Largo. I'm overtired and inarticulate and haven't formed opinions yet but I thought I'd share anyway. I just spent a very long weekend with too many Canadian poets. (The annual general meeting of the League of Canadian Poets was in Victoria, B.C. this weekend, and we had a Seattle reading last night.) The kind I might read that wasn't glowing, but dropped enough of interest for me to check out the album. I like the album much better than you did. They added a friday night performance to kick it off. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones perform friday night... i'm not sure about the entire saturday lineup, but i do know that Lucinda Williams is closing out that day. SUnday will be awesome. Mary Arden Collins is starting the day off, then Patty Griffin is next, followed by Moxy Fruvous, then James McMurtry, and finally Francis Dunnery. Egods...and it's a free concert too...i am so very psyched... Paul Kim ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #175 **************************
