They are here tomorrow, Mon 1st. I've done a couple of portraits to give them, and 1 of our guys will be following them around w/ a vid cam and the *next* R/G special will use some of that vid!!!! There may be a shot of 1 or more during the 5 second, "so and so sent us this" segment. If not acquainted, please watch the show if you get a chance,CYLL. 1 viewing will make you wonder what I am talking about, 2 or 3 will let you know how subtle and sharp these guys can be. I was inspired to pull out _The Walking_ and listen to it this afternoon. Gods, what a brilliant album. Jane is truly a goddess. :) Last night woj and I trekked back into New York City to see Richard Shindell at The Bottom Line, after which we headed over to CB's Gallery to see Joy Askew. It was a great night. Curiously enough, this was Richard Shindell's first time headlining at The Bottom Line - and he was sharing the bill with Lucy Kaplansky, with Vance Gilbert opening it all. I've heard that Vance Gilbert is hilarious onstage, and he didn't disappoint last night. He also has an amazing voice - - he didn't really need the microphone, a fact punctuated when he stood completely away from it for a rousing, gospel-flavored a cappella song he said was inspired by Al Jarreau. His set was short (only 20 minutes), but I'm looking forward to seeing him again at Falcon Ridge. Then Richard Shindell took the stage, to my surprise with a band. He had Radoslav I'm-totally-blanking-on-his-last-name playing piano and accordion, and Billy Masters (whom I recognized from Dar Williams' band) on electric guitar, wearing a Nields t-shirt. :) Overall it was a good set, but I've never once wished for more instrumentation in a Shindell live show, and I didn't really think it added too much to the performance. Billy Masters at times appeared to be playing along to a different song entirely (I'd noticed he did that in Dar's band too), and the added piano actually detracted from the intensity of "Fishing". Lucy Kaplansky came on and provided her excellent backing vocals to the last two songs ("The Kenmore Of My Dreams" and "Are You Happy Now"). She was supposed to come out and sing on "Memory Of You" as well, but Richard forgot. :) The funniest moment of the entire evening came when Richard explained the origin of "The Next Best Western" as coming out of his anger at a particularly unpleasant experience staying at a Best Western in the Midwest, after which he wanted the line to go "oh lord deliver me FROM the next Best Western" instead of "to the next Best Western". But, he said, he managed to get past the anger and not take it out in the song, at which point someone near the back called out, "yeah, but are you happy now?" Richard was rendered speechless for several moments after that one. :) (Non-Shindell fans probably won't get that at all - e-me privately if you want an explanation. :) After Richard was done we really didn't feel like dealing with Lucy Kaplansky, who is great as a backing vocalist, but her voice is way too nasal for my tastes. So we moseyed on over to the Bowery, with a detour to people-watch in Washington Square Park for a bit, and got to CB's 313 Gallery just as Yazbek were finishing their set. We managed to get seats in the back for Joy Askew - I'd never seen CB's Gallery that full before! It was strange to be there and not see Veda Hille - I hope she can pack 'em in like that the next time she's in town. :) Joy had her band with her, and they proceeded to do a wonderful 45-minute set of material from both _Tender City_ and _Gorgeous Creature_. They even had a guest didgeridoo player on one song, which was really cool. She sounded even more like Shona Laing than I'd remembered. We finally picked up her _Gorgeous Creature_ EP, which we've been meaning to get for a while, and it's pretty good, but I liked how the songs worked live better. Well, I was going to reply to a bunch of stuff now too, but we've got major thunderstorms coming this way, so I should probably shut down. I received a copy of this disc to review for the ecto guide, and thought I'd write more detailed comments for the list to warm myself up. A visit to the web-page finds comparisons to two groups: bold experimenters like Kate, Jane, Tori and the lusher, prettier side of world music like Enya, Loreena, and Clannad. Neither seemed particularly apt to me. The discs strengths are definitely its lush arrangements and strong melodies with a hint of classical and Celtic touchs, which I guess puts it closer to the Enya group. The production is slightly thin throughout, which is too bad because the arrangements of the songs are often quite strong. A wide variety of styles are represented in the 7 tracks (which include 2 re-mixes) and a lot of inspiration is taken from literature (Lyrics from Shakespeare, and, according to the web-page, inspiration drawn from fairy tales and The Arabian Nights). Just In Time has the airiest vocals, but builds quite nicely. This is the only song with printed lyrics, and I didn't find it that rewarding to read them. However, I particularly liked the somewhat off-kilter phrasing and vocal layering on the song, and have found it repeatedly creeping into my mind. Next up is When I Wish, whose arrangement put me in mind of English traditional music. I liked imagining Heather simultaneously playing keyboard and pennywhistle :) (Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's Thumbelina) Mirror (anime mix) veared into somewhat generic rock and roll territory. This was the only track that left me cold. Morgiana weighed in with a faint Celtic or British Isles feel. I love the lilt and sound of it, but no matter how many times I tried, I couldn't keep focused enough to work the story out. (Apparently inspired by Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.) I'm particularly fond of the a cappella arrangement of Shakespeare's Sonnet 29. The vocals swoop and twirl in fascinating ways, pulling the lyrics along with them. The 40-oz Crew remix of Sonnet 29 follows, and it's a dramatic reworking of the song. Lot's of familiar sounding techno-stylings here, but the sounds and rhythms are combined in intriguing ways, making this extended version of the song just as compelling as the original. The first version is simple and open while the re-mix piles all sorts of sounds and rhythms into the spaces. The 40-oz Crew remix of Mirror uses a lot of the same elements, replacing the straightforward rock approach I found tiresome. Once again, this is a pretty dramatic reworking, and it sounds like an entirely different song. A much better song (sonically), though at nearly 6 minutes, it was about 2 minutes longer than I was interested in. While somewhat uneven, I found a lot to reward repeated listenings, and a few outstanding tracks. I don't feel like I've done a great job reflecting the feel of the album, so I encourage people to check out http://www.freecloud.com/heather, where you can read other reviews and grab some sound clips. If anyone else has this and wants to make some comments for me to add to the guide, I'd be grateful. Neal now shuffling over: Kristen Hersh - Strange Angels (I really love this disc!) I'd usually say steer clear of everything but Zoolook, as it all sounds like simple, bland, layered keyboards, and now you can add dated to the list too. However, that's been my impression of the little bit of Vangelis I've heard, so maybe you could just by anything. The big classics were Oxygene, Magnetic Fields, and at least one more who's title I can't recall. Zoolook, on the other hand, I think is brilliant. Doesn't sound at all dated, and is full of wild sounds, rhythms, noises, voices (including Laurie Anderson's). It was my first Jarre record, and the only reason I own 3. If I'd bought any of the others first (I also have Oxygene and Rendezvous), I'd only have one. Course, I was never that wow'ed by what little Tangerine Dream I'd heard either, and someone at work just lent me Phaedra, and I was really amazed. It's almost 25 years old, but sounds like it could be freshly plucked from the electronic music section today. I never got into Jarre all that much... I thought he was rather bland compared to Vangelis, for example. Nowadays I don't really listen to electronic music at all, so perhaps I'm not the best person to comment, but I have a strong feeling that something like "Oxygene" would sound terribly dated. And Neal adds: > Course, I was never that wow'ed by what little Tangerine Dream I'd heard > either, and someone at work just lent me Phaedra, and I was really amazed. > It's almost 25 years old, but sounds like it could be freshly plucked from > the electronic music section today. Tangerine Dream early stuff was amazing! Listen to "Ricochet" if you get a chance! In fact, everything they've done right up to early 80's is worth paying attention to. Sadly instead of quitting while ahead, they eventually turned to producing musical wallpaper, but that's another story... What we call today "Ambient Techno" can be traced directly to pioneers like Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schultze (who started in TD before setting off on a solo career) but IMO nothing of what I've heard of that genre can't hold the candle to these early efforts. - ------------------------------------------------------------------ ..Who alive can say, "Thou art no Poet; mayst not tell thy dreams?"
