Up until fairly recently they've been based here in Toronto. That could explain their recent dearth of shows in the area. I think I posted a brief note about them here a couple of years ago. I used to listen to this CD quite a bit but I'm afraid it's been languishing in my CD collection lately. However it is a recommended listen for anyone who likes Dead Can Dance; if you ever thought that DCD needed more electric guitar, this is the group for you! And I agree with Craig, Jim's guitar work really stands out. They put on a pretty decent live show and manage to recreate the atmospheric sound of their album very well live. I mentioned that to Jim and he said that they were careful to not record anything in the studio that they couldn't reproduce in a live setting. They have another album out now but I haven't heard it, now that you've renewed my interest, I may have to borrow my friend's copy. I haven't seen them lately but this same friend (who was lukewarm on them the first time I dragged her out to one of their shows) raved about their most recent show here. - ------------ In other news they've announced the lineups for Toronto's North by Northeast music festival. A couple of names of non-local artists familiar to me from ecto jump out: Mila Drumke and Caryn Lin. Wouldn't you know it, they're playing in the same time slot, and the clubs are not close together. Based on what I've read here I'm probably going to opt for Mila. If any of you familiar with both of these artists think I'm making a mistake, let me know! Oddly, she's playing in a small, rather horrible venue here that doesn't host that much live music anymore but has the distinction of having quite a number of talented ectophilic artists play there, including Veda Hille, Sarah Slean, Emm Gryner, and Anhai. Another ectophilic artist playing NXNE is Brenda Kahn, I anxiously await her set. If there are any ectophiles who are planning to go to the NXNE shows, let me know, I'd love to meet you! I *highly* recommend you take Metro, since there is not alot of guest parking in the complex. To get there... Walk 1/2 block to Wilson Blvd. Make a left (there will be a New-Orleans style restaurant on the corner). Walk 1/2 block, and make a right onto Lynn Dr. Walk past the CVS, under an overpass, and the River Place buildings will be immediately on the left. They're a series of four red brick buildings. I'm in the North building, all the way to the left. The street address is 1121 Arlington Blvd, although this won't help you much. :) From Virginia, via 66: Take I-66 toward DC. Get off at the Rosslyn/Key Bridge exit and go straight. Make a right at the second light, which is Ft. Myer Dr. Continue on Ft. Myer for a few blocks. When the road splits into two levels (similar to CT Ave. at DuPont Circle), take the lower level. Go under the overpass, and immediately make a left onto Fairfax Dr. You'll be facing River Place, a series of four red brick buildings. You will almost immediately cross Lynn Dr. As soon as you do, just before the River Place guardhouse, make a right into the guest parking lot. Parking is free on weekends. I'm in the North building, all the way to the left. The street address is 1121 Arlington Blvd, although this won't help you much. :) From the Alexandria area: Take the GW Parkway toward Great Falls. The street address is 1121 Arlington Blvd, although this won't help you much. :) From Silver Spring, Maryland, via the Beltway Take the Beltway toward Great Falls and Northern Va. Get onto the GW Parkway, going toward Washington. Follow it to the Key Bridge exit. Take the Key Bridge exit. At the top of the exit, the bridge is on your right. Don't go toward the bridge. Alright, I was unsubscribed briefly while I was rearranging my life (new job, new digs in Boston, etc) and missed the question. woj caught me resubscribing and pointed out that there was a question about Ms. Arvanitaki that I could help with, so would someone please repeat it for me? Thanks, Angelos PS. It feels good to be back on ecto. I missed all the discussions about the new Tori (which I have listened to once) and I am sure there are discussions brewing about the new Jeff Buckley which I am listening to now for the first time. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 22:35:53 -0400 From: Horter!!!! You will probably be greeted by a blank stare, but don't let that put you off. It is fairly easy to find. I think I may have actually seen it more than Hips and Makers itself. And I heard all of the stories mentioned here in the three shows I caught in Philly a few weeks back. She did however NOT repeat the stories each night, which was fairly impressive. Of course I am used to Jewel who tells the same stories with the same phrasings for years... Guess she wasn't kidding about those shows out east going very well last year. Enjoy. Last I heard, they were recording for her 2nd album under this moniker, so at least there will be that to hopefully look forward to before too long... Was somewhat consoled when I saw that The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers be hitting St. Louis the middle of next month, meaning Victoria Williams will *finally* play here some 2 months before she comes back for Lilith. Now if someone would just bring in Catie Curtis I wouldn't have had to shell out the $55 for the Lilith ticket as if it weren't for those two in the lineup, I would have probably skipped it and it's 25% higher-than-last-year-ticket prices altogether this year... I'll say it again - between chasing the critics (and now corporate sponsership) and the fickle winds of public interest, don't be surprised if by '00 Lilith's wearing the same collar as Lollapolooza is now. - --- Count me fully in favor of some sort of Ecto Used Music Server (hmmmm... Ecto Music (Used) Server -> EMUS, the other "other white meat" ;) ). While a mailing list solution would be better than nothing (and in its simplest incarnation, easiest to implement), a web-based interface complete with search facilities and all the trimmings would be ideal. Somewhere in between would be something along the lines of the way the "Internet Music Wantlist" used to be run where all adds/deletes take place through automated processing of email commands and the full list is available on demand or mailed out weekly. Going one step further, those with access to plentiful supplies of used discs and a little faith could help out those in other areas by listing things of particular interest in local shops (ie. the copies of Exene Cervenka's "Old Wives Tales" and They Eat Their Own's s/t that have been sitting in the $4 bin forever at a store here), as well as the stuff that is perhaps extremely plentiful in your area (can't seem to go anywhere without tripping over Rebecca Blasband "Rapt", Another Girl "In the Galaxy", and Lauren Hoffman "Megiddo" in the mid-price ($4-$6 depending on the store) bins around here) . I remember about a year and a half ago you could have picked up enough suddenly, tammy! "We Get There When We Do" to tile your floor at $2 a pop here. - --- And finally, to tie the two subjects together, I picked up another extra copy of Waterworks self-titled effort, Kristine Young's second project ("Kristeen Young" being her third and the first that will put out more than one disc, it appears...), so if anyone's interested give a yell. bob np. 'wishing' also has it's share of acoustic guitar based songs, including a tribute to jonathan richman ('the ancient egyptians'). volo volo is next, which takes off where 'wishing' left off. there's a bit more lushness in the production and a lot of high energy stuff (except for the drone of the last song, 'endtrance'). pomegranate (which i think was their last, though i suspect something new might be around since they're touring) is my current favorite. it has a lot more in terms of electronic sounds than any previous work. but, you'll be missing out if you don't go to see them. this band is 10x better live than on record. i usually get tired of their stuff after i've been listening to it a lot, but i never have had less than a fabulous time seeing them (in fact i found them about 10 years ago when they opened for another band - maybe it was robyn hitchcock). they've got a ton of energy (at least as of the last time i saw 'em about 4 years ago). the line up seems to change every couple of years, so i have no idea what's up with them as of late. i'm hoping to go see them at the 9:30 club on june 6. anyone else attending? barbara np: van morrison, veedon fleece ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #168 **************************
