Bic's a New Zealander (I'm not sure of her ancestry) who's had the unusual benefit of getting lots of support from a big label (Sony in this case) which means she's extremely well known over here. I hadn't realised they were continuing to push her in the overseas market, but I guess it makes sense. If my memory serves me right -- I can't find the interview, so I might have it slightly wrong -- she ended up producing her debut album (or several of the songs, at least) herself after being unhappy with the attempts of various people Sony assigned to the task, so I'm guessing that she has a reasonably nice deal. Anyway, the album is called "Drive", and it's good! Not necessarily a 'must own' sort of album, but definitely worth listening to. I mentioned it on Ecto quite a while ago, but as I can never put together a decent sentence to describe music, I didn't really say much about it. There was a five-track EP released first which was very accoustic; mainly just Bic and her guitar. The album has more variety in the instrumentation with strings, drums, bass, keyboards, as well as a few samples (don't worry -- not all the songs have all of this :) but it's all fairly low-key and quiet stuff for the most part. If she continues to get publicity then I imagine some of you with reviewing abilities of some sort will have the opportunity to hear the album in due time and enlighten everyone! While the subject is New Zealanders (albeit ones with a slightly more rocky edge than Bic), I'll mention that if you ever see Jan Hellriegel's "Tremble" it's *well* worth grabbing, IMHO. (I think I might have mentioned this when I last mentioned Bic, come to think of it. :) It was/is Jan's second album, and is a big improvement over her first (which I wasn't sufficiently impressed with to buy), but sadly I don't think this one sold very well :/ I guess the chances of most of you finding it are incredibly slim, but just in case... - -Philip ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 06:05:53 -0400 From: "Joanna M. That's not all: *no* one's pagers are working (this is especially bad for doctors); some gas station pumps that take credit cards aren't working; and a lot of weather and news stations can't get their usual data. If you haven't heard them already, I would strongly recommend checking out both Lori Carson and Lucinda Williams (their sound is entirely different from one another but they are both outstanding); and of course, Patty Griffin whose new CD, entitled "Flaming Red" will be released on 23 June (A&M Records) - it's a huge departure from her solo acoustic sound on her first release, ("Living With Ghosts") as she's got a full band backing her on the new release. Drive entered the New Zealand charts at #1, where it remained for a month, and, by the end of 1997, the album had been a fixture in the Top 10 for 20 consecutive weeks; Bic's debut has, to date, achieved triple platinum status in New Zealand. A live performer of great charm, charisma, and power, Bic Runga creates music that is beguiling, intense and otherworldly. Drive will be available in the U.S. on July 21. I just found out that Veda Hille will be filling in for someone at the Bottom Line in New York City tomorrow (Thursday) night, as part of WFUV's Nightbirds series, in which she's participated before. The original lineup was scheduled to be Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lara Lavi, Patti Rothberg, and a spoken word artist named Christine Taylor, and I'm not sure whom she's filling in for. I suspect it may be Christine Taylor because apparently Veda has been asked to focus on her spoken-word material, but didn't Cindy Lee Berryhill have to cancel a few gigs recently? Whatever. As always there's two shows, at 7:30 and 10:30 pm. Not sure which one woj and I are going to, but I know we'll be there even though we're both complete and utter zombies after getting home at 2 am last night after seeing Katell Keineg at The Mercury Lounge. As always, she totally blew me away. There were sound problems and a broken string during "Franklin", but it was still a great show. "The Battle Of The Trees" has to be one of the most powerful live songs I've ever experienced. I know I had something else to say, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. I bought mine after seeing Jan live... it was a really good gig, and ever since I've been wandering what she's up to, and will she ever visit us again? (I saw her at least two years ago). So Phil, if you have any more current info on her, I'd appreciate a note! As for the CD, I agree it's worth getting, but it is kind of uneven; some songs are wonderful, others less so.
