Every time I see the name here, I can't help thinking something along the lines of "Iva Bittova cold." "Oh, dear, I hope you feel better!" Is her first name pronounced "Eye-va" or "Ee-va"? Maybe if I can force myself to read "eeva" instead of "I've a", I would be able to handle it better ;) Kathy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 13:38:47 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Iva Bittova at the Metro Cafe (DC) Kathy Clark and/or Ed Clark wrote: > I've been trying to avoid asking this, but is her name for real? But yeah, I keep hearing it in my head as in "Iva Bittova headache". I don't think I remember a word of Czech but Iva bittovan idea of how it's supposed to be pronounced, and I'm pretty sure it's more like "EE-vah". (Or is she Slovakian, not Czech?) On another subject, I recently read that the folk music group Värttinä's forthcoming seventh album will be called "Vihma" (archaic-sounding Finnish for... umm, "light drizzle", I think, but don't quote me), and will be released in August on BMG's new ethnic music label run by Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains. This will be Värttinä's first album without founder-member, lead singer and songwriter Sari Kaasinen (this worries me a bit as she wrote many of their best songs, but fortunately the other band members seem to have a knack for songwriting as well), who left the band last year to pursue a solo career and has a new solo album coming out next fall), A new singer, Susan Aho, has been recruited to complete the four-singer line-up. The main producer on "Vihma" will be Janne Haavisto who also produced the most recent Värttinä album "Kokko" (good news, IMO). Juha n.p. Tamar and I were downtown with ecto lurker Anja (visiting from Las Vegas, yay) and her sister, waiting for Graham to meet us for lunch when I decided I was thirsty and needed to get a soda. I went down the street to a little market, and stopped dead in my tracks when I realized the music playing in the store was Happy! _Building The Colossus_, to be exact. I was barely able to master enough speech to ask why that was playing. The guy at the counter said the CD belonged to another employee, who told me that she was sick of the music they usually have playing in the store and decided to bring in her CDs today and force everyone else to deal. I asked her where she heard about Happy, and she said WPKN. Yay! I brought Tamar into the store on our way to the restaurant a few minutes later, and she just about dropped dead of shock too. I think the folks working in that store thought we were all insane. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 17:41:02 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Re: massive ectosynchronicity Hello, Meredith: > ...I went down the street to a little market, and stopped dead in my tracks > when I realized the music playing in the store was Happy! _Building The > Colossus_, to be exact. Ain't revenge grand when it's served COLD? ;-> My big revenge fantasy would be to arrive for work at General Accident Insurance (soon to be renamed CGU come this summer - ugh, easy to confuse with the French film studio UGC)...proceed directly to the closet where the public address system and FM tuner are....RIP OUT the FM tuner with my bare hands (after turning it off and unplugging it) and SMASH it...connect a 12 or 15 CD carousel loaded with Happy, Susan McKeown, Ryuichi Sakamoto (yes), Paul Robeson, Evelyn Glennie, maybe some anime music (Kenji Kawai's _Ghost in the Shell_ OST, anyone?) and a little Negativland, and turn on the juice... Alas, I may lose my job when the "policy processing" unit is shipped elsewhere, perhaps Buffalo (not confirmed at post time)...but I know that the music department at my local Borders, savvy as they may be on Tori Amos, could benefit from some adds to their in-store collection.... There's a really great picture of Sarah, too :) WOMEN SINGERS GET R-E-S-P-E-C-T After making its debut as last summer's top-selling music festival, Lilith Fair returns this month, kicking off a 45-city tour June 19 in Portland, Oregon, with headliners Sarah McLachlan, Sinead O'Connor, Erykah Badu, Natalie Merchant, and the Indigo Girls. Glamour's Caroline Hwang spoke to festival founder McLachlan about how Lilith has changed the music business. "Last year, some hesitant promoters thought we had too many women-the old rule is you don't put two women on the same bill or back-to-back on the radio. But this year, we're a great position: Artists who weren't able to come on tour last summer are calling to ask if there's space for them, and the people who run the venues want us back-the promoter for Jones Beach in New York agreed to do renovations and expand its capacity by 5,000 to get us to return. "Lilith has proven that women can play in the big-business music game. To get respect in the music industry, you have to show you can make money, and that's what we did. But many other t beautiful things also came out of Lilith. On a personal level, last summer gave me a great sense of pride and confidence, things I'd only experienced flashes of before. And Lilith has made us women artists friends. We have that summer camp vibe, where you can't wait to see your old girlfriends from last year. I'm asked if Lilith will ever be open to men, and I don't think it will. I mean, if it ain't broke, don't fix it." - -- Jessica http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 22:10:21 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Iva Bittova at the Metro Cafe (DC) The gig was unbe#$%^&lievable! Imagine Meredith Monk, Milla, Diamanda Galas, Andy Kaufman, Kiri te Kanawa, and the members of Miranda Sex Garden merged into a single body and jamming on Martian covers of Bulgarian folk songs while playing the violin equally wildly and well. The CD hits at maybe ten percent of her live performance. If she's playing anywhere near you, go see her -- and if she isn't, move! The Metro Cafe was jammed, and the audience was riveted. (It was plagued by some of the same semi-competent management Neal had mentioned before: they had only set out a few chairs, and had a lot more piled in the back, so people coming in took their own chairs and put them wherever worked.) I don't think they were expecting that large a crowd... (I haven't been able to find a tour schedule, but I've got my feelers out.)
