Just returned from ProjeKCt 2 in Albany a little while ago, 2.5 hour drive, dinner with my buddy's aunt and her boyfriend, finding _Equipoise_ at some nifty record store called Last Vestige, we drifted over to Valentine's for the show. Note that if you are one of those people who don't like reading show reviews, skip over the rest of this message.. :) Gunn on our left with Warr guitar, Belew in the center with Roland V-Drums, Fripp on the right with his standard Fernandes Les Paul. Was about two feet from the stage due to the fact they made us back away two feet. Show opened with an improv, Belew lays down a drum groove over which Fripp soundscaped and Gunn soloed, broke into Fripp solo, Fripp and Gunn trading licks. Next tune was more structured a hair, syncopation with Fripp and Gunn in pure harmony, Belew backbeat, began showing off some of the toys of the V-Drums. Bass line on the bass drum pedal, hit seven times ran the progression of the bass line, different patterns to shake it up. Third tune was pure improv, slower one, Fripp-scapes, Gunn echoes, soloing by both, Belew breaks out the funky tricks. Last tune of the first set, again more on the structured end. Didn't care for this one that much. 45 minutes so far, fairly evenly distributed, 20 minute break. On the return-- two heavier pieces, both very synocapated, lots of different harmonies, Belew counter-rhythms to Fripp's strumming, a bit of soundscaping here and there. Last tune was a 20 minute jam, Belew showed off his kit big time, Fripp and Gunn ran whacked harmonies in whole note scale progressions, looked to be having loads of fun, even when they messed up and everyone stopped. Closer with a hokey version of "VROOOM". Picked up Belew's _BelewPrints_, more acoustic stuff, listening to it now actually, though I don't like it nearly as much as his last acoustic album, and Fripp's new soundscape, _The Gates of Paradise_. Anyway, time for sleep, my friend's picking me up from school tomorrow around 10/10:30, need to get some rest... mike "wherever the birds can't reach the sky to this land i'll be with you 'til the sun bursts from your side with my hands i'll reach to you" -peter murphy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 03:00:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ****************** Brian Gregory (bgregory@vekkawah.net) ****************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Brian Gregory Thu May 09 1963 Eclectic Patrick Varker Wed May 12 1954 Torius Steve Fagg Tue May 13 1958 Nightwol Karel Zuiderveld Fri May 13 1960 Stier Miss Megan Celia Koster Sun May 14 1978 Taurus Michael Colford Wed May 16 1962 Taurus Christopher Boek Tue May 19 1970 Taurus Yngve Hauge Fri May 21 1971 Gemini Lisa Laane Tue May 22 1973 Gemini Jewel Kilcher Thu May 23 1974 The Gem Chandra Sriram Thu May 27 1971 Gemini Urs Stafford Thu May 31 1973 Give Way Perttu Yli-Krekola Thu June 02 1966 Kaksoset Alex Gibbs Thu June 08 1967 Betelgeuse Gleb Zverev Tue June 09 1964 Gemini - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 May 1998 12:59:05 -0400 From: woj spice Subject: Re: nields news >> Is it a question of whether the BotC CD is available through online >> ordering, or whether it is available for purchase at all? >I think it really was out of print for a while. correct. the deal the nields had with emi guardian prevented them from selling the compact disc version of _bob on the ceiling_ and all of the earlier records as well (though those were pretty much unavailable anyways). now that emi guardian is no more, the nields have the rights to the early records again and can sell _bob_. meredith mentioned to me recently that they "got the masters back", so i assume that they can and probably will be pressing copies of _bob_ again too. woj ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 01:21:01 -0800 From: Hillary Jackson Subject: nields Neal posted: >The Nields have two albums coming out this summer! A few months ago I did a little Happyvangelizing to my friend Johannes. He quickly took to her (as many people do) and quickly bought everything he could find, which at the time was everything from Warpaint on. Recently he decided to seek out the first four Happy albums, and eventually found them. Today he mentioned that one of the stores that he had tried but given up on nevertheless called him to tell him that they did manage to find a couple of her albums. One was _Rearmament_. Another he said was an album with a 1998 copyright date, and while I don't remember his half-remembered title it was reminiscent of _Many Worlds are Born Tonight_. The record store sold him this album for a mere $5 because they said it was a demo copy. I, of course, am flabbergasted. He stumbles onto a demo copy of Happy's breathlessly awaited new album in Eugene, Oregon? Has the universe gone mad? I have beseeched Johannes to let me borrow this CD at the first opportunity; after all, as the person who turned him on to Happy in the first place and as a charter member of the Ecto mailing list, it's my duty to verify this :-) So I should know next week. I'll report again when I know more. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 00:39:49 -0400 (EDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Did someone say Nields? Yeah, that info was in the recent newsletter. I misread it and didn't realize that it included the master for Bob. The newsletter says this [paraphrased]: EMI/Guardian wanted a sack of money for the masters to Bob on the Ceiling, Abigail and Gotta Get Over Greta. They wrote an "impassioned letter" to the president of EMI asking for him to please let them have their records back. "On Friday, April 3, an ailing Nerissa got a call at home at 7pm. The voice said, "Hello, this is Ken Barry, President of EMI worldwide." Nerissa said, "hello' is this a joke?" Mr. Barry assured her it was not and promptly apologized for putting us Nields through extortionist hell and said he was sending us back our masters -- free as long as we don't put them in stores and sell them only from the stage and from our own little mail order 800 number world wide web establishment. Nerissa thanked Ken Barry and told him she was sorry for his troubles and that she'd write a nice song about him." [Like I Hate MCI? Me, I'd prefer I Hate UPS and TicketMaster, but those are personal biases.] On Sun, 10 May 1998, Hillary Jackson wrote: > Neal posted: > > >The Nields have two albums coming out this summer! Sorry, there's no more info in the newsletter. I can't recall hearing a song by that name myself. Neal shuffling over: Adrian Belew - Here Storm of Drones (disc 3: Immersion) Jane Siberry - Child (disc 2) The 6ths - Wasps Nest Bill Bruford, Richard Towner, Eddi Gomez - If Summer Had Its Ghosts The interested thing about the latter disc is the note from Executive Producer Norm Waitt Jr. He talks about his first Bill Bruford experience, King Crimson's 1974 Larks' Tongue In Aspic, and how he's been a huge fan since then. Plus, it planted the seeds of interest for getting involved in the record business. "Getting ot know him has only increased my admiration and respect for Bill's attitude to, and understanding of, the business, and our conversations have not only convinced me to get involved with him on this CD, but were the catalyst in my forming Samson Music. SUprisingly, it has only taken a couple of months to make it happen. So here we are, Samson Music. A highly dedicated independent record company wholeheartedly committed to conitinuing the same traditions of integrity, quality and uniqueness that Bill demands from his music. Look for our first release in the Fall of '97. Our goal is to make an impact by producing work that is at once intellectuallly stimulating and emotionally satisfying. Work that will stand the test of time. If you get a chance to hear some of our stuff, please call, write, e-mail, or smoke signal us your impressions." ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #146 **************************
