Okay, so I got it in all its digital glory today. I was very thankful for the low-fi cassette version I've had for the past week or so (thanks to you-know-who-you-are :), but it's nice to be able to decipher the lyrics, finally. The full review is still percolating in my head, but I can say this right now: I absolutely love it. It didn't slam me against the wall like _Boys for Pele_, but that's not its purpose, and I wasn't expecting it to. The standout tracks are of course "Spark", plus "Cruel", "Jackie's Strength" and "Hotel", and imo the best song on the album is "Liquid Diamonds" (listen to it again, Mike :). I think the only song I could ever imagine potentially skipping would be "Raspberry Swirl", but I positively loathed it when we first downloaded it off the Web, and now I find it quite catchy, which is saying something. "She's Your Cocaine" sounds like a Beatles song, and I'm not convinced that's a good thing yet, but it's growing on me. I like this direction Tori's going in. The "band thing" works (and I can't believe people actually think that's a new thing for her), she's doing some cool things with sounds and textures, and her voice is as gorgeous as ever. This album is definitely going to lend itself to many, many listenings with new discoveries each time. Yay. The list of supreme musical goddesses who haven't let me down has been growing distressingly short of late, and I'm happy to state that Tori's name isn't on it yet. Too bad I'm probably only going to have one chance to see her live on this tour... sigh. Oh, and while I'm here -- everyone in the U.S. should implore their local record emporium to carry Veda Hille's _Spine_! If anyone has any suggestions on places that should carry it but don't, please e-me offline and I'll pass them along to some folks who can do something about it. :) This is going to be Another One Of Those Weekends: Veda on Thursday at CB's Gallery, Kristen Hersh at the Knitting Factory on both Friday and Saturday, and Mila Drumke and Susan McKeown at Fez immediately following Kristen's show on Saturday. Someone shoot me before I experience live music again! Aieee... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 May 1998 23:56:04 -0500 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Angel Baby & Hollywood At 08:25 PM 5/2/98 -0400, Philip David Morgan wrote: >Hello, Cyoakha: > >> wow I just watched a great movie, 1996 from Australia called Angel Baby >> with a killer soundtrack and of course, at the end, like all the little >> indies with really good tracks, there was no listing or record company or >> way to find it. Now now, can't we talk about the virtues of this wonderful Austrailian film without pissing on Hollywood? I can easily list a thousand Hollywood films that are pretty good to brilliant. For every bad/worthless/mediocre Hollywood flick you can name, I'll give you two films worth seeing. Really, that's as bad as saying that all big label music is dishonest. There's really no call for such gross generalizations (says the woman who just ordered 25 movies from Columbia House, 18 of them Hollywood films, including "Annie Hall," "Night of the Hunter," the widescreen "My Fair Lady," letterboxed "Giant" & "The Hunt For Red October," and "Fail Safe"). ... >Fellow ECTOers: the movie is on VHS only from Republic Pictures. It is a >devastating account of two mentally-disturbed Australians and their >troubled romance. I haven't seen the film, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'm definitely going to look for it and the soundtrack. >It is as free from TV movie cliches as can possibly be. Tsk, tsk tsk :-) Do you think every other film other than Angel Baby has TV movie cliches? Or just all "Hollywood" films? (Besides, there are a tonandahalf of good TV movies, ranging from "QBVII" to "The Burning Bed" to "Roots" to "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" to "Citizen X." I hear "Merlin" was good too, but I missed it.) >I'm hoping Republic prices their tape down to $20, or does a widescreen >DVD. If you hear of it coming out on DVD, give a yell. We don't yet have a DVD player, but plan to get one this summer. We've already started collecting DVDs and have 15 so far.
