I'm astonished. Or perhaps the rave review emails just haven't reached me yet... Well, I finally got the album, and heard the new songs for the first time, (haven't been listening to those .mp3s). I'd love to say that I love it, but I can't. Sigh. I've listened it through five times now and it still isn't working. Sure enough, there are a lot of nice songs on the disc, and had it been made by someone else I might be quite satisfied with it, but it doesn't come close to Tori's previous work. (Then again, not much can approach the brilliance of "Boys for Pele" or the other two solo albums.) It's not only that I can't seem to get used to the band sound, which bothers me somewhat on some songs, although it works better on others (and I can imagine a live band might work wonders with things like "Cornflake Girl"). It's also than, in my opinion, the songs just aren't that interesting this time. There are no immediately catchy, more poppy songs like "Talula" or "Cornflake Girl", and the songs also fail to capture the listener (well, me) like "Tear in Your Hand" or "Yes, Anastasia", for example, do. All that said, it's still a good album, just not what I'd been praying to hear from a divine being. Tori's voice is beautiful as ever, her lyrics witty, and the band knows what they're doing. I'd love to hear other opinions (and I'm sure I will :)). Juha n.p. you'll never guess... P.S. Your daily dose of practically useless trivia: "tori" is a common Finnish word for "marketplace". Just saw an ad for "The Tori Cafe" (partially translated), for example. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 May 1998 15:21:01 EDT From: Riphug Subject: Paula Cole rescheduled in Cincinnati! Sinead O'Connor signed to Atlantic Records. According to the blurb, Atlantic is gonna give her the Jewel treatment ie. they're gonna back her and back her until she hits it big. Does anyone know if Barenaked Ladies is playing the HFS-tival in DC this year. I have no idea who's on the lineup, but i'm under the impression that it's an all-male lineup...i hate HFS more and more....my distaste is burgeoning with each new thing i hear about them...such as There were a couple mentions of Delerium's _Karma_ album, in reference to the Sarah track, "Silence"...the song is getting a lot of buzz and airplay at HFS and KROQ and several other stations are hopping on the bandwagon. They're acting like it's a big hoohah discovery...i just wanna bitchslap them all. At least the blurbs said that the album was a year old...i was hoping that the initial hearing of it on HFS was a glitch, an aberration...anyways, supposedly, because of the radio hype of the song, the cd has moved more than 100,000 units retail. I was pleasantly surprised today. I had planned to play Beth Orton and Holly McNarland on my radio show because they're playing the Lilith show in MD (tickets are $51 for Gold Circle [first ten seats], $44 for pavillion seating, and $28 for Lawn Seats...check out www.mpp-concerts.com for more info...according to them, Liz Phair is supposed to play the acoustic stage and EMM GRYNER! YAY! Confirmation!) and tickets go on sale this saturday...so i chose "She Cries your Name" from Beth and decided that Holly's "UFO" was the most radio friendly of the songs from _Stuff_...and so i wandered into my station manager's office while UFO was playing and saw a single for that exact song on his desk in the To-be-reviewed stack...it was so coincidental, it hurt :) There was also a full page ad promoting it and Holly in one of the Radio Biz Magazines i read today...i'm not sure what format they're servicing the single to, though... I bought Dave's True Story's album _Sex Without Bodies_ today...first listening reminds me of Combustible Edison meeting Diana Krall...very fun and cocktaily and jazzy... And finally, my review of Patty's show last night. I saw Patty Griffin at Fletcher's in Baltimore. Lisa Cerbone opened. I took along two friends from the Jewel list (laura marion and chris phillips, for those interested) and met Neal Copperman there. Woooha. Lisa did a great opening set, although i found it difficult to interpret her lyrics, which seemed to be a problem the whole night. I wasn't too thrilled about the accompanying guitarist/vocalist she had...he does the sound at Fletcher's and i think he was a musician on her album _Mercy_, but i thought his vocals did not jibe too well with Lisa's... Patty blew my kneecaps off with a shotgun. I was on my bloody stump-of-a- pair-of-legs, begging her to stop kicking my ass so hard. She came out and did two songs solo (Sweet Lorraine to start *sigh* and then Poor Man's House)...then she called her new band on stage and they slowly trickled on while she started the next song...it was planned but was so cool...the lead electric guitarist and the drummer came on stage and the drummer picked up the beat from patty's strumming and had a simple backing beat; the lead guitar plugged in and tuned a little then joined in quietly; the keyboardist and the second guitarist came on and fiddled with their instruments then joined in, and then the bassist came on and tuned and then joined in...by the time everyone was on stage, they were all jamming and a minute later, the song was done... My god was the sound loud. It was difficult to make out what Patty was SINGING, much less saying...but it was still divine...the band really added a great new dimension to her music...the entire set with the band consisted of stuff from her new album _Flaming Red_ which is due out in June...the title track was a rollicking number...she's really tapping into the Rhythm and Blues spirit with a lot of the tunes...i can see her getting a lot of cross-over airplay on different radio formats...one song that really stuck out was a song for her grandmother that was called "Mary"; it was such a beautiful and sweet song...the band rendition of "Every Little Bit" was awesome... For her encore, she came out and did "Cain" by herself, then had the keyboardist and the second guitarist (on the acoustic this time) help her with "Let Him Fly"... man, this concert was non-stop fun. Everyone has to go out and see her if they can. I'm astonished. Or perhaps the rave review emails just > haven't reached me yet... Maybe the fact that it wasn't officially released until today has something to do with it? I have heard that some shops in Europe have been selling it for a week already, amd some stores in the US sold a few over the weekend, but most ectophiles weren't able to get the CD 'til today. As for my rave review of the album, I'm on my second listen right now so I'm hardly ready to offer details, but overall I like it a lot (though a couple of the middle tracks, "Liquid Diamonds" and "She's Your Cocaine" strike me as being rather weak). My reaction to it is pretty much the as my reaction to BfP was... I disliked most of it the first time I played it, but on the second listen my reaction was utterly different. I guess when Tori does something new I need one listen to the entire CD to get used to the idea before I can really appreciate the new work. I had though that hearing the new songs live would prepare me for the album (and they were *great* live), but the live arrangement of the new songs were much more straightforward than the effect laden tracks on the CD so I really wasn't ready at all. Anyway, once I've lived with _From the Choirgirl Hotel_ for a few days I'll post something with more details, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up loving this album more each time I listen to it.... though of course _Little Earthquakes_ will still remain my favorite Tori album. And to make the day even better, the UPS man just showed up with my two UK "Spark" singles, so I'll have a few b-sides to listen to ass well. Woo hoo! I've still got the Hotel spinning happily in my CD player (haven't really concentrated on it in a while now, though), and it's quite enjoyable, but although I've become quite used to the band sound by now, I find it still lacks that something in the songwriting. I'm starting to accept my not loving it as a fact, especially as I took to "Boys for Pele" (my favorite) and the earlier Tori albums very quickly. Ahh, it would be great to hear this stuff live... Anyway, "Spark" and "Black-Dove" seem to have emerged as my favorites. You don't have a leg to stand on! (Hee.) Anyway, I just wanted to ask if anybody else had looked at the list of album reviews by George Graham at http://georgegraham.com/reviews.html. There's a heck of a lot of stuff there, lots of ecto-ey reviews... I've only had a look at a couple but they seem pretty comprehensive and very well-written. :) sherlyn =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= a+e=ig Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au [Sydney, Australia] "This is the song that we are always just this side of singing..." - Peter Mulvey ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 May 1998 21:45:20 -0400 From: "Kathy Clark and/or Ed Clark" Subject: ectoishness in Chicago June 6-12? Ah, ecto, the great travel planner. I'm going to be in Chicago the week of 6/6 through 6/13, but since I'm in a wedding on the 13th, don't tell me if anything's going on that day. ;) If I have to buy a long purple dress, I'm going to get some use out of it. (Admittedly, for bridesmaid's dresses, it's pretty durn nice). I'm planning to move in and out of town, visiting friends up in Madison, and down in Springfield, so hopefully I can work in an ecto-meet or two. Anyone email me if you're interested, and if there are events coinciding, all the better. I think last time we got together before I left Chicago was to watch _The Line, the Cross, and the Curve_ at Vickie's now-old-place, and that's sure been a long time ago :) Hope to hear from the Chicago ectophiles, Kathy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 May 1998 22:27:43 -0400 (EDT) From: Stuart Myerburg Subject: Re: From the Choirgirl Hotel On Tue, 5 May 1998, Michael Curry wrote: > As for my rave review of the album, I'm on my second listen right now > so I'm hardly ready to offer details, but overall I like it a lot (though > a couple of the middle tracks, "Liquid Diamonds" and "She's Your Cocaine" > strike me as being rather weak). I'm only on my third listen, and I would have to agree that right now, those two, along with "Pandora's Aquarium," do absolutely nothing for me. The rest of the album I like a lot. _from the choirgirl hotel_ is much more instantly likeable than _Boys for Pele_. But I don't know if that's good or bad. After I listened to _BfP_ enough, it became my favorite Tori album (if not my favorite album of anybody's). Hopefully, _ftch_ will have the same staying power. Right now, my favorites are "Spark," "Raspberry Swirl," "Jackie's Strength," and "Hotel." "Jackie's Strength" is just a perfect, classic Tori song. "Spark" also sounds very much like what we've come to expect from Tori, but adds just enough of the full band sound to make it seem somewhat fresh and different. Plus, it has a fabulous bridge. But I'm most surprised by how well "Raspberry Swirl" and "Hotel" work. Tori uses a heavily processed, synth heavy sound on both of these tracks and really succeeds in creating two of the most interesting tracks on the album. > And to make the day even better, the UPS man just showed up with my two > UK "Spark" singles, so I'll have a few b-sides to listen to ass well. Woo > hoo! "Purple People (Christmas in Space)" on the first single is one of the best Tori B-sides I've heard in a while. While I love _BfP_, I disliked most of the B-sides from that album. It looks like the new B-sides may be a return to form for Tori. Now, after two listens, I'd agree, though I must point out that "She's Your Cocaine" has one of the most fabulously bitchy lines I've heard in a song in I dunno how long: "You sign Prince of Darkness / try squire of dimmness" > The rest of the album I like a lot. _from the choirgirl hotel_ is much > more instantly likeable than _Boys for Pele_. But I don't know if that's > good or bad. What he said. UtP and BfP both had me sitting up wondering "What the hell was she THINKING?" on tracks like "Waitress" (which frankly scared me the first time) and "Professional Widow" (ditto). (and I still wonder what the hell she was thinking when I think of that friggin' grapefruit!) So far, I really love "Spark" (sounds much better when it's not on HFS), "Black-Dove (January)", "Jackie's Strength", and "Playboy Mommy." The lyrics, overall, seem less obtuse than Tori's been writing lately (which is not to say that this is a straightforward album, but just... well...just think "Space Dog") I also picked up Dana 'n Karen Kletter's _dear enemy,_ and am currently on my second run through that as well. A lovely album. It inspired me to pull blackgirls' _Procedure_ to take to work tomorrow, and I was glancing through the liner notes when I had to laugh at the thank-you to Mimi Goese, who's had several mentions here lately (as have the Kletters...though I don't think in the same breath anywhere). Worth a look by those into folky music with pretty harmonies, odd stories, and lots of banjo 'n violin (not to mention a track in yiddish!) jeff n.p. _dear enemy,_ Dana et Karen Kletter ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #140 **************************
