Between learning new science, a new culture and a new language, I just don't have time to read the list anymore, and since CD's are so expensive here in Holland, I won't be able to keep up with the newest sounds anyway. It's been an educational (and EWS-inducing) five years on Ecto, and I'll continue to follow the latest exploits of Miss Rhodes and the rest of the ecto pantheon as best I can. I'll be in touch with some of you, I hope. Awesome concert. She has such a tremendous voice, I may have to complete my Holly Cole collection. Two songs that I thought were wonderful was her live "River" off of _Dark Dear Heart_, and a really funk version of "Khe-Se-Ra-Se-Ra" (sp?). Finally, a version of that song I like. :-) Talk about a tight band. Both of us walked away quite in awe, me moreso, including the fact my wife liked it. She usually doesn't like "my music". :-) Opening for her was newcomer Chris Stills - Stephen Stills son. Another awesome performer. My musical tastes tend not to gravitate toward male vocal, but he is an exception. Quite a wonderful performer, and very ectoish. His vocals are very tight and mature, as is his guitar chops. Probably the best quitar player I have heard in awhile. I cannot agree with you more. Usually when an unknown opening act is announced and a lone guy with an acoustic guitar comes out onstage, I cower and await the worst. But Chris was really, really good. Almost made me cry thinking of Jeff Buckley. He's really nice, too. He was so thrilled that someone came up and complimented him after the show he acted like I was his best friend for life. Great voice, great songwriting melodies, _great_ acoustic guitar playing. His father is Stephen Stills, as Matt mentioned. Anyone know who his mother is? He said something about her being a big pop star. Joni Mitchell? Joan Baez? Mitzi Gaynor? I have absolutely no clue as to the love history of the members of CSN&Y. > Matt Bittner > > np: Chris Stills, _100 Year Thing_ > nr: After finishing Neil Gaiman's _Stardust_, in between books. n.p. 9 Lazy 9: _The_Herb_ (Chris Still's album is in the car, where I've been playing it to death .) n.r. _The_Good_Soldier_, by Ford Madox Ford. If the > rest of the album is in the same league as "Superhero" I may have to buy it. If you like her voice, go for it. Not as an aquired taste as say, Victoria Williams, but definitely not a mainstream delivery. First saw her kicking off Lilith here, then again opening for Holly Cole last time through. Thought she was a bit more polished the 2nd time and I kinda preferred the unpolished version. ;) As to whether the entire album is in the same league as "Superhero", I'd say as far as musicianship and lyrics, for the most part, yes; stylistically, not exactly. The album isn't 100% gems, but its unquestionably better than the standard fare. If you aren't certain, keep your eyes on the used bins - I've seen several cutouts/promos in the $6-$8 range locally. > Wow, what a great song... Love that chunky infectious driving fun music... "Molly" and "Passing" (if only for the "crank it to 11" guitar intro ;) ) fall in that category as well. Though the album runs the gamut from "Superhero"esque crunchy electric guitar to slower ballads (with the title track, "Ugly", and "What I Wish For" being among the better ones) the emphasis is decidedly on the latter (at one point going so far as to replace the electric with an acoustic). And speaking of Holly Cole: 2 more days. Glad to hear Chris Stills is worth the listen because coming back on the heels of her packed show here a few months ago, getting there late won't be an option. bob np. It certainly *was* a good movie, but I must admit I didn't pay much attention to the soundtrack... I'll have a look around the record shops and tell you if there is a CD available.
