I would concur, a lot of the jazz I like I first heard there. 89.5 is really a killer station. And for those of you in the northeast, if you're ever in CT, I discovered Happy Rhodes at a record store called Brass City Records in Waterbury. (http://www.brasscity.com/records). Really a great place, and the owner, Walter, is the one who turned me onto Happy. 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu said: > i've been a DMB fan for like 3-4 years or something, and have > seen nothing but continual improvement and diversity in their > songs. That's funny, I thought that since _Remember Two Things_, there was no real diversity in the band. Heard some tunes from it on the aformentioned 89.5 when it first came out. Enjoyed it emmensely at the time, but have found all later albums to be more and more disappointing. DM's voice grates on me these days too. Haven't listened to DMB in a long log time, personally. > the new album uses different instruments and arrangements > and are great. :) Different instruments never really impressed me much, but I come from a long and odd musical background as a player. > and they are all *Great* players. I'd give the rhythm section that vote of confidence, but not the rest. Lessard/Beauford are a great combo. Maybe I'll actually go music shopping this coming weekend. Tough choice, but if I were to go with my absolute essential disc that was released in 1998, I'd actually go with the rerelease of Pharoah Sander's _Jewels of Thought_ on Impulse!. As far as rock music goes, either Bruford/Levin's _Upper Extremities_ or Porcupine Tree's _Coma Divine_. Both killer prog stuff. And as far as female singers (who seem to be loved here for some reason..:), Indigo Falls' self titled debut. The Bruford/Levin disc is mail order only from Papa Bear Records, PTree's is available on Delerium, and IFalls on Medium Productions in the UK. Pharoah's is the gem though, even if it's nearly 30 years old, I'd never heard it before, so it's new to me. mike "wherever the birds can't reach the sky to this land i'll be with you 'til the sun bursts from your side with my hands i'll reach to you" -peter murphy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 May 1998 03:00:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: No birthdays, just a monthly listing - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Marvin Camras Sat January 01 1916 Tapehead Jeanne Schreiter Tue January 03 1967 Capricorn John Sandoval Wed January 04 1967 Capricorn Paul Cohen Tue January 05 1954 Capricorn Tony Garrity Mon January 08 1962 Pool of Life Greg Bossert Tue January 09 1962 OfTheTimes Troy J. I'm going to refrain from a review at this time because it'll be available to everyone soon & I don't want to give too much away. As many longtime Jewel "scholars" know, her poetry has one major difference from her songwriting. That being that her poetry is far more autobiographical & personal than her songwriting. That is definately the case here. By reading "A Night Without Armour", you'll gain a lot of insight into Jewel's thought process, her history, her relationships with her family as well as her thoughts of growing up (& now missing) Alaska. The dust cover on the book itself says it much better than I can, so I'll quote: "Writing poems and keeping journals since childhood, Jewel has been searching for truth and meaning, turning her words to record, to discover, and to reflect. In A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR, her first collection of poetry, Jewel explores the fire of first love, the fading of passion, the giving of trust, the lessons of betrayal, and the healing of intimacy. She delves into matters of the home, the comfort of family, the beauty of Alaska, and the dislocation of divorce. And then there are the images of the road, the people, the bars, the planes, places exotic and mundane, loneliness and friendship. Frank and honest, serious and suddenly playful, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR is a talented artist's intimate portrait of what makes us uniquely human." Here's an excerpt from the books preface. Jewel says: "I've learned that not all poetry lends itself to music--- some thoughts need to be sung only against the silence. There are softer and less tangible parts of ourselves that are so essential to peace, to openheartedness, to unfolding the vision and spiritual realm of our lives, to exposing our souls. " The book contains 109 poems total, some of which EDAs will recognize, including the Jewelstock poetry. The CD & cassette contains 87 tracks of Jewel reciting these poems, with brief solo acoustic guitar interludes dividing various sections. Here's the ISBN #'s for ordering in advance: Book- Harper-Collins ISBN 0-06-019198-8 CD- Harper Audio CD 10162-2 Cassette- Harper Audio CPN 10162 Jewel dedicates A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR to: The One in Whom we live and move and have or being to my parents, Nedra Carroll and Atz Kilcher to my brothers Shane, Atz and Nikos and to the land which inspires my heart to sing, Alaska For those interested in Jewel's thought process & background, her perceptions of the world around her & especially all of you who collect lyrics & quotes, this will become a treasured resource. The AIDS Ride is a 350 mile bike ride from Raleigh, NC, to Washington, DC. It's no small task -- I'll be joining almost 2000 other riders to raise awareness of AIDS and raise money for AIDS organizations in the Washington, DC, area. I've been training for the last several months, and have had to face many personal doubts that I could really ride this distance. There have been days when the last thing I wanted to do is ride my bike or workout. But the hardest part, for me, is to ask for your support. I've committed to raising at least $1,800 for Food & Friends and the Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, DC. I hope you will join me in this challenge. You can get more information about the Ride at http://www.aidsride.org, and a pledge form is available at http://www.aidsride.org/wash/pledge.html. My rider number is #543 and my full name is Valerie Nozick (you'll need this for the pledge form). Any amount will help, but please keep in mind the commitment I've made to the Ride. You need to get the pledge form back to the AIDS Ride office by June 1; I ask for you to respond by May 15, so I can keep track of my fundraising efforts! Also, if you are in the DC area, I'm hosting a fundraising party on May 30. Please consider yourself invited, and drop me a note if you want to attend. It'll probably be a beer-tasting party, since I have a huge number of friends who like good beer. :) Thank you in advance for your support. I couldn't do something of this magnitude without the love and support of my friends. Feel free to pass this note along to anyone who might be interested in supporting me on the Ride. Love, Valerie Ps. I do NOT want this to interfere with the fundraiser for Jeff W.'s computer. I can't begin to thank Jeff enough for everything he's done for ecto. As such, please consider contributing to the some.org computer fund FIRST, and then to my AIDS Ride efforts. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 May 1998 23:26:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Michigan Womyn's Music Festival On Fri, 1 May 1998, Riphug wrote: > Oooo! She said she's preparing to embark on a west coast tour, so keep your eyes open out there. I don't have tour info, but perhaps others can post that when available?
