This reminds me, though, of a question Angelos Kyrlidis asked of Happy through an interview thingy Vickie did back in...what...'92? This story deserves repeating, particularly in honor of Angelos' birthday, which is today... Angelos wanted to know, "Why are you holding your fingers like that on the cover of _Warpaint_?" I'm sure if he'd just asked here, we would have all pointed out that she's symbolically applying warpaint to her cheek, but instead, we got a flash of humor out of Happy, whose response was, "Super glue accident." Mimi's P.S. 122 performances were solo gigs if memory serves. Han Rowe performed at the Factory regularly with other bands as well, and was featured in some of the early large ensemble Zorn "Cobra" pieces, as was Susan McKeown's Bass-Master Lindsay Horner. When Han wasn't on stage slashing horse tail to strings or sitting in the audience, he could frequently be found at the board doing duty as engineer for a surprising variety of acts. Hi there. As I'm new to the list, I figure it's about time to post my "hi, hoiw ya doin'?" message, so here we go.... My name's Mike, I'm a college student at the wonderous and musically challenged University of Connecticut. I live across the state, and have all long 20 years of my life. ANyway, I ran into Happy around 4 months ago. Guy at the music store I shop at (Brass City Records, www.brasscity.com/records, in Waterbury, CT, possibly the greatest record store on the face of this planet..) kept screaming to me how great this singer was. His bill of sale for me was trying to tell me that David Torn played with her. Well anyway, one day I was at this used record store, and saw a couple Happy Rhodes discs. Curiosity overwhelming, I flipped through the booklets, only to discover that one David Torn played on one of them. So off I go to buy _Building_the_Colossus_. To this day, I can think of few things that have grabbed me quite as much as "Hold Me" as far as opening tracks. Here I've got a vocal I an't believe one person is doing, and Torn's monster guitar solo at the end. I was impressed, suitably. So since there, _Rhodesongs_ and _The_Keep_ have made their way into my collection. Her cover of "Ashes to Ashes" still blows me away, but then, I'm a Bowie fan. So here I am on the HR list listening to Prince and ranting about Bowie. So I guess a bit of my musical tastes are in order. I like a lot of progressive rock, King Crimson, Queen, Yes, Genesis, Queensryche, David Bowie, the stuff everyone knows in prog, and a bit of the weirder stuff, Gong, Magma, Archetectual Metaphor, Porcupine Tree... some of the "old" ambient stuff (i.e. the not techno stuff...), Eno, Harold Budd, Jah Wobble, Hector Zazou, Robert Fripp (of course...), all the old Japan guys, David Sylvian, Jansen/Barbieri, Mick Karn.... I like a lot of the old glam and goth stuff that was appearing in the 70s and 80s, Bowie, Eno I'll mention again, and Japan, but also stuff like Talking Heads, TV Personalities, Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Joy Division, Siouxsie, the Sisters of Mercy, the Cult, the Cure.... some ecstacy/"girl band" stuff, Heather Nova, Eve's Plum, Kristen Barry, Aimee Mann, Kristeen Young, Juliana Hatfield, Poe.... and then a bit of other stuff that I can't fit into one of those groups, Frank Zappa, Portishead, Alice in Chains, Jane's Addiction, London After Midnight, Captain Beefheart, the Beatles, The Velvet Underground/Lou Reed/John Cale. That's my pop music side. My jazz side consists mostly of a lot of the old "free jazz" movement, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, John & Alice Coltrane (more the latter than the former), Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, Eric Dolphy, Sonny Sharrock, and some more "tame" stuff, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Mark Isham, Louis Armstrong. For those of you who know music, you'll see all the "tame" jazz I list is all trumpet players, probably 'cause I am one myself, for twelve years now. Going to buy a new horn soon, actually. Personally, I tend to write jazzy ambient pieces, been playing guitar for two years, got my horn, and my roommate (who taught me all I know about guitar playing, and plays my stuff better, plus is a phenomenal pianist to boot...). I've got three pieces written, and a fourth in the works, which I hope to get al recorded and with one or two other selections, laid down on a CD beofre the end of the year. God knows if I'll pull it off, but it'd be pretty damn cool if I did. But what do I know, huh? Anyway, that's me, feel free to insult my taste in music or whatnot, I'm used to it from the college crowd (my all time favorite quotes are "do you listen to jazz to help study, 'cuz I heard that classical raises your IQ, so maybe jazz does too", and "is this hummingbirds having sex?" (that one in response to Fripp's soundscapes...). Alas, to this day, rap/hip hop/r&b (not the old 50s r&b mind you, I kinda like that too... vocal harmonies and all that good stuff..), alternative/grunge/new punk (as opposed to the Ramones, the Clash, etc... who I also like..), ska/reggae, pop in general, country, most metal (excepting Iron Maiden..), and the Dead and all their proteges (i.e. Phish, Dave Matthews..), none of that stuff ever made sense to me. But what do I know? And if any musicians are from around here, I live near Waterbury and New Haven, CT when I'm home; drop me a line if you'd be interested in jamming, ESPECIALLY if you play jazz. I've been looking for more and more people to play out with. Judging from your examples, I have a recommendation for you: _Ki-Oku_ by D.J. Krush and Toshinori Kondo. D.J. Krush is one of the inventors of the style now known variously as Trip Hop and Acid Jazz; the style first made widely known by Portishead. Toshinori Kondo is a Japanese trumpet player. _Ki-Oku_ is one of my favorite albums of this year: Krush's spare, smoky, deeply layered Acid overlaid with Kondo's warm, sad, atmospheric Jazz. Here's a very good review I just found online. Read this review, Mike, I think this album would interest you. >This one almost slipped through the cracks: > >Another album of note out here recently is DJ Krush's fantastic >joint project with longtime Jazz trumpeter Kondo Toshinori. Notable are an atypically "techno" beat by Krush on >the first track, "Toh-sui," the indescribably perfect combination >of Kondo's nearly ambient melody, and Krush's manually programmed >beats (i.e. non-looped), an unusual joint cover of Bob Marley's >"Sun is Shining," the splendedly "lifted" feeling of "Fu-yu" >(which Krush claims is a "summer" track), the one take "live" >track "Ki-gen" which Krush claims to be his gift to demonstrate >the potential of a DJ's musicianship, the powerful abstract >bass bomb of "Ha-doh" and more. 13 tracks in all (3 of which >might be considered "interludes") at Y2500 per CD (around $25). >The album is apparently only planned for Japanese release right >now with NO plans to release this material on vinyl, though the >promo's DO exist.
