How many years is a few? few = "a small number" 3, last time I checked, was a pretty small number. > nor do I think of 4AD > as "obscure." (If 4AD's obscure, what does that make AG?) I dunno, I think of the album as being somewhat obscure. And either way you slice it, AG is virtually unkown. Oh, and Alan, the Kendra Smith album is really good. Go find an obscure record store and buy one! I believe Drum was slightly shorter as an album, but got a few tracks added to the still very short cd. Drum and Mettle are probably both about a 35 minutes long. ANd that's barely a complaint. I think Drum is a perfect album, and I'd rather have a 35 minute long perfect album than one that's twice as long that I lose interest in. I like Drum better than Mettle, but I like Mettle too :) Mimi Goese had her background in performance art, I think at PS 122. It certainly showed live. I saw Hugo Largo twice at the 8X10 Club in Baltimore, and either one of those shows would make it onto my top 10 list of all time best shows I've ever been to (with probably 50 other shows!). It was both compelling and frightening, and seemed genuinely dangerous. (Plus, amusingly enough, Sue Trowbridge was at one of those shows, many years before I knew her. And their couldn't have been more than about 25 people there.) When I saw R.E.M. on the Green tour, I was in ecstasy when they did a Hugo Largo cover. I'm sure most of the other people in the arena were quite confuesed. I was quite surprised to see Hahn Rowe again some years later, making equally scary noises at almost as disturbing a show by Foetus, Inc. (Don't worry, they don't sound anything like Hugo Largo.) Although I have to admit I'm not familiar with The Changelings. I'm glad you asked Neile, I just assumed there were no Atlantans here. Not sure why. One of my favourite Toronto artists, Emm Gryner, will be playing in Atlanta at the Music Midtown Festival, on May 1, opening for Morphine. If you do go see her, Stuart, or any closet Atlantans here, do introduce yourselves to Emm and say hi, she'll be far from home, and it's probably been a while since she played for audiences with no familiar faces in them... While I'm posting about that, some random updates on Emm Gryner and Sarah Slean: Emm is all finished with the new album which will be released on the Mercury label in the US on June 23rd. The Canuck release will be some time after that but no date has been set yet. Emm has a return engagement at Lilith Fair! She's back on the acoustic stage but this time she'll be playing at the Philly and DC Liliths (although this information seems not to have reached the LF website yet). Attention Cas and other western NY 'philes, Emm will be playing in Rochester on May 23rd at something called the Lilac Festival. Sarah Slean will be re-releasing _Universe_ in CD format in early May. Rumour has it that a special surprise or two awaits purchasers of the CD version... :-) Anyway for those 'philes interested in getting a copy of this very cool CD, let me know, we can arrange for myself or one of the other Toronto ectophiles to pick one up for you. By then, "Toronto ectophile" will be a term that will apply to a certain Mr. Stark. :-) Sarah continues to record songs for her next CD, which will be a full-length LP. She is reportedly having difficulty choosing which songs will go on the CD, it sounds like it'll be a good one, folks! Anyway that's all for now. I'll let the Stark post about the terrific Veda Hille show we experienced in Toronto... or maybe he already did. I've been a bit erratic in reading my ecto digests during this here exam period...
