Europe Daylight Time) From: Marion Kippers Subject: Massive Attack with Liz Fraser ?? (& Radio Ecto) Hi, Just wondering: I just heard a song on the Dutch cable-only "Alternative Radio" station Kink FM, that according to their playlist is probably "Tear Drop" by Massive Attack. During the song I kept thinking that that voice sounds so familiar, and all I could come up with is Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, but she's singing in English :). I searched the web but couldn't find anything, and of course now it keeps bugging me. It didn't sound anything like a Cocteau Twins song to me, or it should be of the "Otherness" kind, but it did sound like a Massive Attack song... Can anybody help me out? It's not that I liked the song that much, I just want to know. :-) BTW, I don't know if Kink FM would qualify as Radio Ecto, but between all the alternative rock, crunch, rap, and other noisy boyz with guitarz stuff they do play a lot of Ectophilic artists. Checking the playlist for the past hour or so I notice Garbage, Blondie, K's Choice, Bow Wow Wow, Tori Amos ("Siren" has been on their playlist for quite some weeks now), Jonatha Brooke ("Crumbs" just finished), Indigo Girls ("Power of two" is now playing). Also they play a lot of the 80's music I liked a lot then, and they're not afraid to slip in some Kate Bush album tracks every now and then, from "The Dreaming" even. I guess I should point them to Happy... Only thing is, due to financial problems they only play non-stop music during most of the day, so I don't know who to address, and I don't like their "we're alternative just to be alternative and that's why we're better than the rest" attitude. Oh well. :-) I would like to know who selects the music to be played, especially the person who selects Kate. In case anybody's interested, the playlist is on http://www.kinkfm.com/playlist/ and the homepage is on http://www.kinkfm.com . A little while ago, Bob Waugh announces that he's about to play a Delerium song featuring Sarah McLachlan that's "so new, I haven't even heard it yet. Pat Farisse handed it to me when I walked in this morning." He of course mentions that it's "Silence" and then cuts to commercial, wondering what information he can dig up on it. Based on the backannounce, apparently a whole bunch of people called up to point out that it's an old song from an old album featuring all sorts of cool people (not that HFS would ever play Rose Chronicles), and admits that "we must have missed this the first time around" and then explains that Nettwerk has re-released the album to capitalize on Sarah's massive popularity. I have this sneaking suspicion that, with Sarah's new-found pop popularity, they wanted something to present to the alterna-stations who played Sarah back when she was producing non-pop. Surfacing feels like a cop-out -- Sarah didn't have time to write strong material (no wonder with Lilith and her new marriage), so she recorded songs that would normally have been set aside. No matter how many times I listen to 'Building a Mystery', it still seems dull, awkward and weighed down by inane lyrics. Same with most of the rest of the album. And with her new image, I get the feeling that she's caving into the record industry's demands for sex-symbol female rockers. Has anyone been picking up the singles and listening to the b-sides? I've listened to her stuff since '89 and it's been a clear progression to the middle of the road for her. She's lost much of her edge musically and lyrically. I'm not saying this just to bash her, because I think she has the potential to be an interesting artist if she really wanted to move in that direction. However, it's doubtful to me that this is possible, given her success with "Surfacing" and the continued industry acceptance of her pop style. Just compare singles like "Into the Fire" or "Path of Thorns" with "Building A Mystery" to see what I mean. - --Jim On Mon, 20 Apr 1998, Valerie Nozick wrote: > > > jeffrey c. burka wrote: > > > I'm just happy to hear stuff that isn't off the still-really-boring > > _Surfacing_. > > > > Had to comment...I'm going through a Sarah-crisis, for the same reason. My roommate played me what was on the B-side of his Kate Bush-The Whole Story tape. On there was a band called Hugo Largo. He said he had tried to find some info on them but had been unable to. So naturally I turn to my ecto folk....Neile has an entry but no info in the ectophile's guide. The link on the gaffa site is no good. Anyone know of anything? Current or otherwise? Thanks in advance!
